Alright, alright, alright,
I've been reading this sucker for a while now, and I figured it was time to break the silence and tell you all why I'm waiting.
For me, honestly, it's not about which processor Apple decides to drop in the MacBook Pro next. I sort of hope it's Penryn, if only because then it'll be sooner. But I'm not waiting for the speed bump. I didn't buy a MBP before school this year not because it was too slow for me, but because it was too ugly. I'm waiting - so, so desperately - for a case redesign. I remember that this case looked great when it was first introduced on the PowerBooks 5 years ago or whatever, but that's just it - it's been years. And the thing still looks the same. I think that we're going to see a redesign this time around, and here's why: as you all probably know, Apple kept things looking the same to make the processor switch as much of a non-event as possible. Now that the entire lineup has been switched over, everything's getting a case update, and the MBP is the notable exception.
Apple definitely doesn't like to keep legacy designs around any longer than it has to - look how quickly everything became black and silver when they decided, apparently starting with the iPhone, to switch away from white and into nicer materials. Or how the candy iMacs so quickly lost their myriad plastic textures in favor of all-white gloss. And the MBP shows its PowerBooky roots really visibly - the rubber piping and pads, tacky outlined battery, the old-style latch, the centered sleep light, the keyboard, and especially all the screws. With all those interruptions in its planar surfaces, it's not their style anymore; they've even mostly ditched the speaker perforations for those tiny ones like on the iMac mic and Air sleep light.
For you guys who think Penryn will only be a drop-in speed boost with a bigger trackpad, I offer this: if they're changing the trackpad, then they have to throw in the multitouch controller, which could mean an internal redesign. More importantly, a bigger trackpad means one part of the case design is different, so don't you think they'd just redo the whole thing?
And of course, here's my dream of how it'd look: Silver on the outside, black on the inside. Thin black glass bezel around the display, iMac style, and black aluminum keyboard/palm/trackpad area, like on the iPods. It would be so, so sweet - especially because the magnetic latch cutaway could show a tiny little sliver of black on the outside of the thing when it was closed. It'd be sleek as hell, don't you think? Especially if they work in the new curvy edges popping up on the iPod Classics and the Air. I know it's unlikely; Apple wants its pro things a nice 50% grey so the display's colors are nice and neutral, but man, would it be sexy.
I wouldn't mind an HD 15'' display or Blu-Ray, either.
That's what I've got to say. Hope you made it through! And oh, yeah, you can add fastthumbs to your list.
