What's your situation in relation to a MacBook Pro?

I've been thinking about that too. HD-DVD only officially died this week though. So i'm thinking maybe the next generation of laptops will have blu-ray. On a 15/17 inch monitor though, the difference between SD and HD isn't that profound. You need a much larger screen to truly realize the difference (i'm not saying there is NO difference!).

I couldn't disagree with you more; have you ever watched a DVD in full screen on a laptop? The blown-up resolution is painfully obvious. A typical higher res 15" laptop screen is more inline with 1080p, and the display of video at the full supported resolution is markedly superior...

I'm waiting for Monetiva. I'd bet Apple will end up doing a case redesign for the magnetic latch and multi-touch trackpad, and with any luck they will make the HDD user replaceable. If they do Penryn now, it will be on the Apple version of the Santa Rosa platform, and really won't be too much of a performance boost.

I hope the Monetiva MacBook Pro's will have the high definition in the fifteen inch. I'd love to get it in the 17 inch, but I don't want to lug all of it around.

And what better way to transition to all high def screens than with Blu Ray drives?

Oh come on, it's not that hard to replace the disk. Takes all of 15 minutes with the iFixIt guides.

I know, but when I'm paying THAT much for a laptop, it's understandable for me to be a bit nervous about taking it apart.

Let's try to break a million in amount of money to be spent on MBP day!

If you'd like to be added to the list, leave a post with your name in bold. Thanks!

The Waiting...

Anyone else feel like this waiting is cruel and unusual punishment. Some one is going to have to pay my psychiatrist after I go crazy from all this waiting. Just two minutes ago I was staring at the Apple Store page and apparently my eyes unfocused because the "New" over the MacBook Air shifted over to the MacBook Pro and I freaked out for a second. This doesn't seem healthy. :(

Except that Monetiva is slated for release in the summer, meaning more like early fall. So no, it wouldn't be in Apple's best interest to wait that long. Besides, Penryn will be more a performance boost than Monetiva.

I don't know about all of you but I'm going for the HR 17'' with 7200rpm drive, so I'll be spending quite a bit more than that!

I'm pretty sure that across those waiting, we have quite a bit over a million USD$ by now!

I'm despairing! I'm currently working on a G4 867Mhz Dual with 1GB RAM and I do web design and development work! Add to that the bunch of apps I have running at all times, and you understand my pain! Not to mention multiple browsers... ARGH And that's my workstation at the office, and I have no home computer right now! :(

I have been considering getting a Mac Mini and a screen to have at home, and just drag my Mini from home to work every morning! But that doesn't allow me to take it to Starbucks to get some coff.... I mean, inspiration!

This is getting to be a REALLY long thread, and it's almost impossible to read all comments so far, but I skim through it almost every day... If not at work, I do it while in the sh*twhole on my iPhone! :p And yes, the iPhone is the one thing keeping me from going out and getting a current gen MBP since it allows me to have REAL web anywhere I go.. But not work! :(

I really hope they release them on the 26th or I'll probably go out and get a current gen... And I don't want to as I know I'll feel miserable about how awful that money was spent on an overdue product! Or I could get a Mac Mini... and that would keep me from buying the MBP until at least mid-summer or maybe Christmas, since I'd be getting short on $dollars$... And I can't live without a laptop that long...

Enough rambling... It doesn't make me feel any better... :(

Cheers everyone,
~Levi F.

Hope For a Redesign

Alright, alright, alright,

I've been reading this sucker for a while now, and I figured it was time to break the silence and tell you all why I'm waiting.

For me, honestly, it's not about which processor Apple decides to drop in the MacBook Pro next. I sort of hope it's Penryn, if only because then it'll be sooner. But I'm not waiting for the speed bump. I didn't buy a MBP before school this year not because it was too slow for me, but because it was too ugly. I'm waiting - so, so desperately - for a case redesign. I remember that this case looked great when it was first introduced on the PowerBooks 5 years ago or whatever, but that's just it - it's been years. And the thing still looks the same. I think that we're going to see a redesign this time around, and here's why: as you all probably know, Apple kept things looking the same to make the processor switch as much of a non-event as possible. Now that the entire lineup has been switched over, everything's getting a case update, and the MBP is the notable exception.

Apple definitely doesn't like to keep legacy designs around any longer than it has to - look how quickly everything became black and silver when they decided, apparently starting with the iPhone, to switch away from white and into nicer materials. Or how the candy iMacs so quickly lost their myriad plastic textures in favor of all-white gloss. And the MBP shows its PowerBooky roots really visibly - the rubber piping and pads, tacky outlined battery, the old-style latch, the centered sleep light, the keyboard, and especially all the screws. With all those interruptions in its planar surfaces, it's not their style anymore; they've even mostly ditched the speaker perforations for those tiny ones like on the iMac mic and Air sleep light.

For you guys who think Penryn will only be a drop-in speed boost with a bigger trackpad, I offer this: if they're changing the trackpad, then they have to throw in the multitouch controller, which could mean an internal redesign. More importantly, a bigger trackpad means one part of the case design is different, so don't you think they'd just redo the whole thing?

And of course, here's my dream of how it'd look: Silver on the outside, black on the inside. Thin black glass bezel around the display, iMac style, and black aluminum keyboard/palm/trackpad area, like on the iPods. It would be so, so sweet - especially because the magnetic latch cutaway could show a tiny little sliver of black on the outside of the thing when it was closed. It'd be sleek as hell, don't you think? Especially if they work in the new curvy edges popping up on the iPod Classics and the Air. I know it's unlikely; Apple wants its pro things a nice 50% grey so the display's colors are nice and neutral, but man, would it be sexy.

I wouldn't mind an HD 15'' display or Blu-Ray, either.

That's what I've got to say. Hope you made it through! And oh, yeah, you can add fastthumbs to your list.

I want the same case redesign SOOO bad... it is time.

EXACTLY!!! Above all I want the MBA keyboard and design style!! Don't care for black bezels and I doubt they'll have them (MBA doesn't have them... both are business/enterprise/pro oriented... maybe future MB will have it).

Of course I do actually expect a little GPU bump as well... Maybe some 88xx Nvidia stuff?? With PhysicX already?? :)

I'm getting a 17'' HR but I think they should introduce a HR 15'' version with 1680x1050, or upgrade the 15'' to that standard resolution! (doubtful)

But PLEASE: new keyboard and a slightly slicker/thinner MBA-style case design... PLEASE... for next week!!! PLEASE!!! :(

PS: this anxiety is getting to the point where it's... sad! :/ ("Yes honey, I'll go have sex now!! Don't need to say please!! I'm all done checking MBP rumours now! I'm headed to bed now! Ya ya, I love you too... eeek!!! What do you mean "Who is Steve??"?? No no, I'm not gay! He's just... just... Buahhhhhh I HATE YOU STEVE!!!!" Then I cry, don't have sex and wake up the next morning ready for the same routine)

Alright, alright, alright,
[...]

I'm just glad you're not saying "make it thinner" or "put the MBA keyboard on the MBP".
I think I can visualize what you're talking about, but you should do a mock-up of it. It sounds pretty cool. I'd like to see exactly what you're thinking.

Likewise.

I really doubt Apple would wait much longer to release the Penryn's as almost all other notebooks are currently shipping with them.
Sadly, this fact actually has me re-thinking switching to Mac. If I'm going to drop the extra cash for a MacBook Pro, I'd like to know I'm investing in the most up to date hardware. I'm a computer science PhD student without a laptop, and this semester is rapidly passing me by. Every week I wait is another week I spend struggling to do cutting edge research on an ancient desktop. If Apple's only option is a dated architecture with the same steep price tag... I'm afraid I might be forced to purge Vista from an ugly Dell soon. :(

Its a pro model, it will have to have a drive...

Apple has a history of surprising people still. The chip in the air was a special release for Apple. It's said to be used on some other laptops on the dark side sometimes soon (if not allready used).

WHAT IF...

Apple keeps working hand in hand with intel and release Montevina WAY before scheduled date (read : within February) ? That would be a great move for both Apple and Intel.
Would such a scenario be even possible?

Well i was waiting for a MBP, but the disappointment was killing me every Tuesday! So took delivery of an 8 Core MacPro last night, with the 8800GT, Airport and Wireless Keyboard and Mouse..... However............. Although it's a superb machine, i am willing to send it back if a Macbook Pro is released within the next 14 days.

So add me ^Squirrel^ to that list you've done Elektroakoustik. Top work by the way!

I don't think that 75% of MR members are waiting to buy a new MBP. This poll says nothing unless it's on the front page.
