Usually happens when I walk out of the gym on below zero to 20 degree day.

Must have been one of his failures.

I have to say, seeing the white phone in the videos, it does look sharp. I've never purchased a white iPhone, always gone for space gray/black but that does look sharp.

It isn't white, It's silver so I am not sure why people keep making that mistake.

It's a 1200 dollar phone. For that money I am expecting ZERO flaws and I already see some in the early reviews. Again, this may be just because these guys have 24 hours to review them and everything is very rushed on their side. But still I wont die if I get my iPhone in 2 or 5 weeks. :)
You cant expect anything to have zero flaws regardless of the cost. That’s just unrealistic. Especially with electronics and especially if the company is rolling out a new first generation feature with said product. But that’s just me.

I personally am looking forward to FaceID because my palms sweat frequently and TouchID would not detect my fingerprint 8 times out of 10 because of it. And from what I’ve seen with all of these “first look” videos, the reviewers have claimed that FaceID works 9 times out of 10 which is good enough for me. It’s faster than the first geneteraiton TouchID, but a bit slower than the second generation.

Well my iPhone X isn’t due until the first week or 2 of December so there will be many real use reviews starting this Friday. If FaceID isn’t ready for prime time then I may pull the plug on my order and wait until next year. I hope that isn’t the case though.

Apple has gone on a wild run with marketing with this.. forget doubling down, they have gone much far to market this... if only the production (and price) would be better

I went straight to iMore. I love how Rene is both excited, as well as critical of some aspects, and, is one of the most educated with regards to context of the current market. He has used Samsung, Google, and other phones, and knows the extensive history of iPhones.

Drives me nuts reading an editorial, and they leave out apple’s past failures, Rene is aware of them and doesn’t blow the little things out of perportion for click bait. Not really interested in the Verge, and some of the others, somewhat for what @maflynn pointed out.
He very quickly says apps will be able to track expressions ?? So sensor always on ? Wth

I agree with you. Of course no product is perfect and I know that. I mean, I love my iPhone 7 and its far from perfect! :D
But just like you mentioned its a first generation product and because of that I am just going to hold it for a couple of weeks and see people's feedback on the product.

I agree with your point of view on this. It was also very recently that I discovered that even on the 2nd generation of Touch ID a lot of people have issues. I went to visit my sister, who had bought an iPhone SE and because of her very very dry hands what happens is that 2 or 3 days after registering her fingerprints they stop working because of the constantly changing skin's texture and thickness. I think for these people Face ID may be very important. It shocked me to see that as for me Touch ID works 99.9999999% of times!

I would assume that you would have to allow access to the sensor. Similar to granting permissions on Android and iOS for extended access.

They've talked before that there's an Api that allows tracking through the sensor, that's how Snapchat gets access for filters to support more advanced filters etc.

How often are your hands wet when you use your phone? I personally can't remember the last time I had a failure of unlocking my phone with touchID.
Every time I’m at the gym sweating on the bike. Or when I’ve just washed my hands in a public toilet and the hand dryer isn’t working. Or when it’s raining. Don’t get me wrong, it’s rare for it to fail completely but it does happen: my point was that people seem to be expecting more of faceID than touchID, it isn’t going to be perfect in every situation.

Thats amazing! I wish it'd work for me as well as it does with you. BUT I guess I won't have to worry about that for much longer now that I'm receiving the X this Friday ;) Am definitely looking forward to full review videos and see other peoples experiences.

I am glad they gave the iPhones for review before Friday, because thanks to these quick reviews I decided to cancel my Pre-Order for the iPhone X. Going to see how the Face ID subject develops in the following weeks to then make a decision of going for it or waiting for the 2nd version of the product (which I am sure will bring Touch ID again).
Just signed up hours ago to let us know your canceling.

I would assume granting permission to the camera would also grant permission to the sensor.

All of which you will likely have to enable. Similar to how you have to allow access to both the Microphone and video camera when first using Snapchat or Instagram.

Unless Apple decided to not allow us to control, which, I feel would be a mistake.

As someone else said, we can always tape over it. ;)

Maybe this is why it failed for Craig on stage?

It failed on stage because those who were setting up a demo had already triggered Face ID by mistake, which resorted to a passcode when Craig tried using it. Passcode is the back up method.

Face ID is inconsistent. That's what I keep hearing. That's why I didn't pre-order this year and that's why I'll wait. Maybe until the Xs phone next year. Production problems with the parts that make up Face ID that resulted in production problems with the overall production of the phone. Not surprising that there are reviewers having problems with it. Hopefully they get it it perfected by next year, or succeed in putting fingerprint ID under the screen by then.

It’s been debunked over and over that they were trying to put Touch ID in this phone. They’ve been all in for over a year and aren’t turning back.

Don’t fall for the troll bait. It didn’t fail. It worked exactly as designed.

95% of reviewers say Face ID works well and macrumors folks focuses on one . Yep . Just another forum debate

After reading the Wired review and a couple of others, it really says one thing to me; The iPhone X *may* be a game-changer, eventually -- but early adopters who waited up all night just to be among the first to get one are enjoying bragging rights more than anything else right now.

Essentially, the wireless charging is a "gee whiz" feature that doesn't actually improve anything. With the other iPhones, you had to have the lightning charging cable available somehow to charge it. Now, you have to have the wireless charging pad (and its associated power cable) instead. Saves you the very small effort of physically plugging in a connector to the phone, but means you'll need to spend more on wireless charging pads to carry around with you if you travel and want one in the car, in your laptop bag, one attached to a "power pack" battery you use for quick recharging in emergencies, etc.

The new display? An improvement over what was already a great looking screen, so that's nice, but not earth-shattering. The downside of that is that now you've got curved glass, edge to edge, which costs a lot more to replace if you accidentally crack it.

The single biggest thing you've really paid for here is the facial recognition, which as Wired points out, is really a component of the augmented reality. Right now, you get a few goofy animated emojis as sort of a "proof of concept" of what's to come. Potentially a big deal, but it all depends on what software gets developed for it over time. Just like the original iPhone ... was really just setting ground-work for things to come. Other than that? Unlocking the phone by looking at it instead of touching the button is the main use for it, and that will need some more software fixes to really get it as reliable as people expect it to be.

In other words? I'd like a new iPhone at some point, but I can easily hold off until these are plentiful, in stock everywhere to grab one and go. It'll take at least that long for 3rd. party developers to really do cool things with the new tools in the phone.

Looks like Apple told all early reviewers in order to review the phone you HAVE to talk about how great Animoji is.....
