They are non-changeable buttons, and if you don't sign up they take you to a page where Roku earns a commission if you sign up. Why won't Roku let me change what the buttons do... oh, it's because they were paid to put those services there. Your excuse that they are the most popular services is false because they aren't consistent across devices. They sold ad space on their remote. There isn't a spin for that that fact.

The screen saver and menu ads don't just show ads for additional content but don't let that fool you. Ads for movies and videos are still ads. It shows content for subscriptions you don't have not ones you do. And again, Roku earns commission if you sign up. They are ads that take up 1/3rd of the screen.

There are no straws to grasp. As long as Apple keeps the UI looking nice and responding quickly it is far superior than the economy stick roku is pitching. Seriously, they admit to it. Read up.

Look dude, if you want to use the limited Apple service and live in their walled garden, no one is stopping you. But your attempt to show everything Apple does is "good" and all others are "bad" is only going to limit your options. Roku offers a "we have no dog in this fight" great line of services. I use the Netflix and Amazon buttons all the time. People who don't have the services press on them and are given an easy way to sign up if they want.

And so what if Roku earns a commission, so does Apple on all their services to include the app store. The new Apple TV App will be included on the Roku device along with Netflix and others. Oh but that will be okay with you right? People should have Apple on their devices... It is only bad when it is someone else.

The new Apple of Tim Cook. Fashion, lifestyle, subscriptions, credit cards, tv shows etc. What about hardware and software innovations. I couldn’t believe that this guy could deliver a worse keynote than the previous ones. But he actually did it.

I don’t care to read anything from the censored politically corrected appleMagazine Plus. Anyone with the least part of his brain functioning shouldn’t sign for sth like this. I wouldn’t use an app like this even if it was free.

I was wishing Apple could provide more content to its great hardware, but in terms of software. Apple still lacks a credible office suite, for instance. But instead Apple decided to enter the content market by creating media, turning itself into a services provider.

Well, I do not expect to buy a computer from Apple anymore. If I want to get some work done, then I will buy a Windows computer. But for media consumption, Apple seems to be investing big.

Still, too little to show this time. I expected more. Apple unveiled new iMacs, new iPads, new AirPods, this week, all in its website and in press releases. I thought Apple was making room for something groundbreaking. Which never came.

And I guess the market was disappointed as well. Apple shares are down.

I am not saying everything Apple does is good, I am saying facts. Roku is slow and covered in ads. If that is good or bad is up to each person. I had a Roku and it annoyed me and I ended up returning it. I wouldn't recommend it to someone because of those problems. It's not like they show recommendations within apps you signed up for, they show them for ones you don't sign up for. That's not cool - for me - but if you like your tv looking like the blue envelope mailer than great. I bet Roku is a great way to get pirated content and non-english TV. But for those of us looking for a high quality, responsive, ad free experience I recommend the Apple TV. And yes, I would recommend it even if your TV has Roku built in. Of course, when it is built in than I don't have to explain why I don't recommend a Roku stick.

Apple doesn't force me to sign up for TV services I don't want. If I don't want HBO I delete it and never see HBO again. Roku sees that as an opportunity to sell you more subscriptions.

I can't help you if you cant read it yourself.
I can see every single article under WSJ.com -> Business Section in the apple news+ WSJ -> Business& finance. Try it yourself. Not sure where is the missing content here. BTW, theres no business reporting section on their site or their native iOS App... I guess its missing from everywhere. :p

https://www.wsj.com/news/business

You can see every single article from the print edition? Why can't you report what the official statement is from Apple? If you become a digital NY Times subscriber they offer you a replica digital edition which is an exact copy of the print edition, is Apple offering an exact copy of the WSJ print edition?

I visited Apple.com and I don't see anything confirming that every article will be available from the WSJ.

Roku doesn't force you to sign up for anything either. If you buy a Roku it is because you intend to sign up for the various services. And I don't need your recommendation. I use Roku and I know how well it works, as do many others. And no Roku does not have anything to do with pirating or anything illegal. You are just making things up now and acting like a fanboi. Roku does many things that Apple TV can't do, but you wouldn't know that as you can't break free from your Apple world. And this is the problem with being so locked in that you cannot function outside of your locked in Space.

I use all kinds of products from all vendors and I am able to make my choices on what gives me the most for my money. Apple TV cost more and does less, and you can try and dress it up any way you like. It does not change this fact.

Great. You are roku's product. Wear that proud, but don't tell people you are their customer because that would be untrue.

I am very much their customer, just as you are a Apple customer. You are just upset because you tried the usual Apple fanboy tactic of trying to put another product down with misinformation and got caught out. I am not a clueless 15 year old girl with an iPhone that thinks everything Apple does is wonderful. Unlike you I have used many products and services and so can call BS when I see it. And that is what you are trying to sell BS.

Dude. They make money serving ads to you. Just because they sold you a box doesn't make you their customer. Their business is with the content providers that pay them if you sign up for their content. I am not putting them down. I think their business model is clever. It's not one I would participate with, but then again I can recognize the difference between a feature and an ad. I am really worried for you that you can't tell the difference. Maybe you are trolling me, but you might actually tell people these things you are posting and that would be dishonest of you. Please don't be dishonest.

Roku makes their money selling their hardware. They are not an ad company. They do not have their own services like Amazon, Netflix, or Apple. This is the main selling point for them. They allow access to all services unlike Apple or Google where some things are not available. Every streaming service in on Roku because they are not a competitor. That is what their business is being a platform for services. The only "ads" as you call them are them showing to those that buy the hardware all of the services that are available. They are not tracking you or selling your info.

You are just making things up to try and justify saying Apple is the best. They are not. It is because of the conflict of interest Apple, Amazon, and Google have that I choose Roku. This is what makes them better. It is clear that you really don't understand what you are talking about, and you should first educate yourself.

I stopped following Rene a few years ago. Obviously you've got to be an Apple fan to run a specialized site like iMore and I expect a very distinct Apple bias in the articles, but that guy went off the deep end. Way too many arguments over anything even remotely critical of Apple, and absolute adoration over anything Apple announced.

Where he really lost me though was his unyielding defense of denying Apple was throttling the iPhone because of battery issues despite substantial evidence otherwise.

I couldn’t agree with this more. I consider myself an Apple fan and I have most of their tech. But man, I simply can’t stand Ritchie anymore.

I used to enjoy imore but he’s simply become an all out apologist and a blind evangelist.

Makes me wonder if he’s on Apple’s payroll as PR or something.

did I ever mentioned the print edition?!! You clearly have some issue with reading. Firstly I told you that Apple.com states that WSJ is available on News+. And then told you that *every* article on business section of WSJ.com is available on the apple news+ cause YOU came up with some internal memo which says "business reporting" will not be part of news+ offering... clearly the memo was incorrect!

Heres the official report on the whats being offered, from WSJ. https://www.wsj.com/articles/wall-s...ith-apple-marks-shift-in-strategy-11553556819

This clearly says *every* article is available to the users. Some of them are shown(curated) but all articles are available to the user(through search)... its an UI/experience question rather than some articles not available to news+ user. WSJ thinks users wont beyond the curated articles, however they dont limit users to go beyond whats being presented..

Where... is... the... Mac... Pro...?

What are you doing?

I watched the whole thing (to the end), wondering the same thing myself.

I saw paid Subscriptions for Newspapers, Magazines, TV Shows and Movies. Also, casual (low end) Gaming, and credit cards .

Since Big-Bird's friend mentioned coding, I thought maybe she was going to give us the Mac-Pro-2019 sneak-peek, but nope. The Mac-Pro-2019 is taking so long, I think they have had to start-over (technology-wise) at least once.

At least Apple Arcade seems to include games for the Mac and the Apple-TV (tvOS). To not more actively promote the Apple-TV (hardware) in this event ... as a high-end media-center, gaming machine, and HomeKit hub ... seems strange.

I know it wasn't WWDC or even a hardware-event, but throw-us a bone Apple.

Yes and you are reading on an otherworldly level, congrats, what is quoted from Apple is in dispute and now Apple is silent about whether all articles will be available. And that is what several posters and I have been questioning is whether ALL articles will be available, that remains unclear.

Whether or not WSJ was available on News Plus was never in question, that was never what any of us posted, so again, here is a PSA---RIF.

https://www.morningstar.com/news/ma...out-its-subscription-services-unanswered.html:

A statement on the Dow Jones website by CEO and Publisher William Lewis said the content for Apple would be a "specially curated collection of general interest news from The Wall Street Journal," a message that was seemingly repeated in a later interview (https://www.bloomberg.com/news/arti...street-journal-joins-apple-s-netflix-for-news). Yet journalists were still reporting (https://twitter.com/pkafka/status/1110301069337223168) Monday evening that the full Journal slate would be available on Apple News for the standard subscription price, and the Journal itself published an article Monday night (https://www.wsj.com/articles/wall-s...ith-apple-marks-shift-in-strategy-11553556819) saying that "the paper's entire slate of business and financial news will also be searchable within the app," citing "people familiar with the situation." Officials at Dow Jones, which also owns MarketWatch, and Apple did not respond to questions Monday afternoon about what exactly the Apple News+ version of The Wall Street Journal will include.

Update: And lo and behold here is what you posted in response to another poster:

Are you sure full WSJ is included in that subscription?

DelhiFox, "Yes. Check out at apple.com."

You are the one answering a question about the FULL WSJ, we were not asking about the WSJ in general but that poster and we want to know if the full paper will be available. We only referred to the business section because that is what many journalists are reporting is what will be compromised and to this minute Apple can't answer if the FULL WSJ will be included for $9.99 per month.

But thanks for helping and adding insults when you bungled one sentence.

This just makes me all the more happier that I built a hackintosh that outstrips any Mac on the market today.

They are no less an ad company than Facebook. They sell ads. I have provided you with multiple screen shots and references to news and sources that indicate that their business is selling ads not hardware.

What? Do you go to iTunes too and expecting to see no content you have to buy to consume?

Kind of naive to think that Apple TV is fundamentally different. It will suggest you shows/movies you don't have access to yet and that Apple gets a hefty commission for...
[doublepost=1553583512][/doublepost]
Still in dispute of what WSJ is offering but if we take them at their word it still is not great, searching for an article is not ideal, I thought Apple would be presenting an Ipad centric designed digital replica of the exact paper edition, goes against their theme of sacred news.

I thought there was an option for WSJ and when clicked it was only WSJ articles. But you might be correct, News+ might just be a "personalized" filter which Apple is notoriously bad at...

There is a fundemental difference between looking at the products in a store and having the menu of your content being 1/3rd ad, or having a permanent button dedicated to a service because that service paid to have their name on your remote. There are no ads on the Apple TV menu. There are no ads on the Apple TV remote. There are no ads on the Apple TV screen saver.

Apple doesn’t show me ads asking me to sign up for services of apps I don’t have installed. You have to launch apps, and that’s the content provider serving the ads, not Apple.

It was announced earlier that it is high possibility that they will announce or show Mac Pro at WWDC. Why would they do it on services centered event?

Roku is more in the face with promoting services, sure. But don't try to make it like Apple is driven by something different than profits.

They are just little more low key about how they want to funnel all the subscriptions down your throat.

And BTW the older Apple TV wasn't that much different.
Clearly mixing in content you don't own in the menus.

On the original Apple TV you can hide the ones you don't want, and when you do that they don't pop up anywhere without your permission. The Roku menu has ads that take up 1/3rd of the screen.
