Exactly - sound freaks prefer a straight optical link rather than going the TV.

No... *sigh*

The HDMI from the Apple TV (or whatever other device) goes into an input (say HDMI 1). Another HDMI cable goes from your receiver (TV Out) to your TV's HDMI input.

This is how it is supposed to work.

- No capacity updates
- Nano now becomes the 3rd gen shuffle of the family, I mean really at what point do they discover smaller isn't better? Furthermore, how is this thing supposed to be anything less than an annoyance with a clip design and a touch screen? Dropped video support, dropped camera, downgrade at its finest.
- Classic is the same song, but I'm glad they kept it around. No updates at all this year gives a good sign this is its last year.
- iPod Touch got some good updates, but no capacity upgrades means a user has to chose between the massive classic capacity with an arcane interface, or the latest features with less than half the capacity.

Wow only 100BASE T Ethernet,
Wouldn't it be better to have Gigabit ethernet for good streaming?

I was thinking that same thing, but then I wasn't sure if the A4 would maybe have troubles keeping up with that much data anyways, so maybe it would have been a pointless addition...I dunno. (I'm trying to give Apple the benefit of the doubt on this one.) My whole house is wired and connected by a Gigabit switch in the basement so Gigabit would have been a nice addition, but I think they are also betting that most users will opt for WiFi.

I guess they figure most people will run it over Wi-Fi. Correct me if I'm wrong, but I think a 720p video stream still is under the 100Mbps anyways. Since there's no local storage, it's really just streaming one thing at a time.

Apple TV is pointless at least for countries where shows and Movies are not available. It will continue to be pointless device until they set tv shows and movies in countries like that.

The only thing interesting is Ipod Touch the rest is pointless.

Seriously, Ipod Shuffle, is it me or they took a few steps back to an old design?

Also netflix rents out tv shows on DVD. i'm assuming these shows are or will be available streaming. i just hope the quality is good
No, not everything they have on DVD is available to stream, not even close. Quality is hit and miss (at least on the Xbox). The HD stuff looks pretty good but some of the SD stuff has a lot of pixelation. I've noticed that most of the stuff labeled as "Starz Play" looks worse then the videos straight from Netflix. For the price, I don't complain and I enjoy it a lot. If there is something I really want to see in the highest quality I'll just rent or buy the Blu-Ray.

I was really hoping that they would announce some type of iTunes media streaming to your iPad or iPhone (over WiFi). Can this new Apple TV see you iTunes library and play music from it? If so I may pick it up. I've never been able to get media streaming to work that good with the 360.

Depends on how you define "functionality". I (and 99.99999 % of "normal" consumers") could give a rats ass about the audio codecs it supports. If it's easy to hookup... easy to run... easy (and cheap) to watch a show with good quality video and audio... then they've satisfied the market.

You have to realize that what uber-geeks want / need is COMPLETELY different from most consumers.

The new ATV will sell orders of magnitude more than your "functional" WDTV...

100% agree. I would like to have MKV compatibility, but in all seriousness most average consumers could care less. If it's easy and it works/looks good...people will buy it.

If people think for a minute that Apple will have a hard time competing against boxee/wdtv they are wrong. Outside the "techie" community people don't even know what boxee or XBMC even is. I currentl have a WDTV and will be upgrading to an Apple TV.

Most of the complainers about codecs or formats only care because they are pirating movies and tv (my theory)...so the average consumer would probably love for their movies and tv rentals to link to their iTunes account.

The best part about all of it - for me anyway - is that with every new product or service offering, Apple renders Microsoft more and more irrelevant.

You know absolutely nothing about technology. Goto a major corporation and tell them Microsoft is irrelevant. Microsoft owns the computer industry still. Unless another company can contend with Exchange or any of the other Microsoft Corp. infrastructure suites, MS will be around a long time.

As long as 720p is under the theoretical 12.5MB/s transfer rate, then yes it's plenty of bandwidth.

Am I the only one who digs the new iTunes icon?? It looks neat, I like this blue color, reminds me of Quicktime icon (never was much of a fan of the original iTunes icon, which I replaced pretty soon after switching to Mac).

What pisses me off tho is why is it still not 64-bit??? I expected Apple to make it so with iTunes 10 and not add some crap social networking service to it.. performance improvements would be a lot more welcome.

What about iLife 11??

I really like the new ATV; however, I'm probably the target "normal" consumer for it. I don't have any gaming systems (xBox, Wii, etc.), my HDTV is only 720, and I have a basic stereo set up, which is plugged directly into my TV (no surround sound). The ATV is pretty much exactly what I want, which is to stream Netflix, plus video, music, and pictures from my MBP, without a lot of hassle. For this price, I'll definitely be buying one.

I have to say I don't get the new Nano at all. I guess it's for someone who wants something tiny like the shuffle, but with a bit more functionality. I have last year's Nano, and just bought an iPhone, so fortunately I'm not in the market for an iPod of any kind. However, I'd definitely take the Touch over the Nano, even at the additional cost. Maybe that's what Apple had in mind. :D

Who is your ISP, and where do you live - because I need to be there!

Well my university has some good connectivity (not in the evenings though ;) ). I was mainly talking about streaming content from my Laptop to the AppleTV though. Every other Apple-Network appliance has 1Gbit Ethernet so I was really wondering why this would be different. Sure hope it support IPv6

How is it possible that iPod Touch camera shoots HD (1280x720) when in the same time is capable shooting photos in only 960x720?

This camera has to be crap. Even footage from it, on Apple site looks bad.

One more thing that sucks, is battery which is probably smaller than iPhone's (just check the specs on both)

No it's adding pay. Existing Hulu will remain the same free service for current shows.

Source: http://www.dslreports.com/shownews/Hulus-Pay-Model-Finally-Official-109117

Confirming several months of rumors, Hulu today officially unveiled Hulu Plus. As leaks suggested, Hulu's still keeping their free service -- but users who want to be able to watch an entire season (or past seasons) of a show can pay an additional $10 a month. It also looks like users who shell out the extra money will get TV content in 720p as opposed to the usual 480p. You'll still see ads either way.

720p to 720p is pay.

Yes, and people already with surround systems probably have the connections tied up, so an extra optical is very welcome.

the biggest fail is still the iPod Nano they got rid of

Video
Camera
Bigger Screen

just to squeeze it in size (whats the point? the nano was tiny enough and if u really needed a micro device u could have got the shuffle) o_O

and the price ... 159 € for the 8 GB iPod Nano, this equals to about 200$

if you want that then spend $80 more and get an ipod touch

AppleTV will never be anything but a small niche product unless it has everything in 1080p. People do NOT buy giant HDTVs to watch stuff in 720p.
