Do you whine about every new model of car that comes out too?

Ugh... still four wheels

Ugh... still has seats

Ugh... runs on petrol

Ugh... made of metal

Ugh... glass windshield

Seriously, phone market is maturing. The innovations are always going to be smaller year on year. What do you want, a pocket teleporter or something?

I think some of you need to look back 10 years and try to realise just how wonderful smartphones are. Just think about what you carry in your pocket and all the things it can do.

What can you expect? You are talking about a bunch of immature, over-entitled, spoiled brats with the attention spans as short as what's in their trousers. They have no concept of computer history, engineering, or manufacturing. All they know is ME! ME! ME!

I dont understand how Apple isn´t able to release this phone at the day of ennouncement, when everyone knows that it will be announced the fall of every year now.

What you're asking for for an amp that goes to 11.

In other words, the phone is ready when it's ready. If they had simply scheduled the keynote for 20 September, your wish would have been granted.

...but the phone still wouldn't be available until 20 September.

Apple has lost its innovation skills. I am not impressed at all. I followed this event and at the end I was like "meh". I like my i5, no good reason whatsoever to change phone.

This was the "S" upgrade. It's appealing to people who bought the 4S 2 years ago. Also, there's not much in the GS4 that appeals to existing GS3 owners, so it isn't just Apple. That said, I think 64-bit is a bigger deal than most people realize.

Yeah. And no other product announcements either. The iMac and retina MacBook lines are due for updates.

The plastic phones look really ugly color wise. White looks fine of course. And $29 silicone cases? Would you want ppl to recognize you for a fool who paid that much for a silicone case? Great that the 5c has the 5 guts.

Excited by the A7. Should be unb'feakinleavible in the iPad. Now can we finally have Adobe Flash? Never mind.

Well in a day or 2 you can get the exact same cover for 2-3$ of eBay from some china man

Nothing overly exciting, outwardly. I don't care about the fingerprint sensor. I will say, I love the A7. If this chip is, indeed, twice the speed of the A6 (and we'll assume UP TO 2x), then it once again embarrasses those 2013 quad-cores for the S4, because the 2012 quad-cores in the S3 could not best the A6 chip. It won in some areas, but not by something that was technically faster (more MHz *AND* more cores). It took another year and bumped MHz to finally beat the A6 handily. I do wonder if the A7 will REALLY embarrass the other guys (by continuing to be dual-core) or only slightly embarrass them (by being quad).

That said, I'm ready to upgrade from 4S to 5S. In fact, ALL my Apple hardware is getting updated this year. I have no Thunderbolt ports... no USB 3. No lighting. No ability to push Airplay from my MBP. It's time! :D

Think ill wait for the 6 or 6S. Bigger screen is what I want, so for now I will have to go elsewhere to get it.

Ill still have my iPad to play with iOS 7 though :)

iPhone camera update inquiry...

Did they announce the Mega Pixel count on the iPhone 5S, is it still 8MP???

Hmm..

I don't have a fone I haven't had one since I ditched cell service some 8 and a half years ago. I strictly use free wifi terminals everywhere I can to keep in touch, I still use pay fones, calling cards and borrow fones to make quick / urgent calls.

Anyways, it isn't that impressive to have a smart fone, it is handy from time to time but I admit it feels so great to walk out of my office / house / where ever and bump into people I know and asking them if they have time for a walk to catch up or go for lunch, you know? I loved it when I had a fone and trust me, I loved it so much I relied on it for everything. It got really out of control and not to mention the plans and rates were a big red sign to never look back, no competition and really poor service, no more, it is freedom for me.

This whole thing with security is really fascinating that people rely on a gadget for security, isn't that ironic? People are so paranoid and armed with so much "perceived security" for these people who are very insecure... The best security is not to have one of these devices at all or at least if you do, to always have it on you. I have seen people leave their fones on the counter at a bank, cafe, store, concert ticket booth etc, proving to me people can 'not' multi-task to save their lives, let alone their fones... I have seen people get their fones ripped right out of their hands walking through a busy crosswalk, people really want these fones.

These gadgets are making a lot of people happy, too happy, especially the cops, the FBI and all them out there who really want to know everything you do with your fones. You're attached to them at the hip kids.

People don't really get together any more, they gather together and use their phones together and thats that.

So much for mega sales in China and the emerging markets like India. At these prices no way Jose. I'm happy to stay with Apple but honestly I don't see today's announcements doing anything to stop the Android juggernaut.

As for the camera, I'd hardly call increasing the size of the sensor by 50% to be "barely" improving it. MOAR MEGAPIXELS is easy. A better camera isn't so. Battery life staying the same is an accomplishment given that they have significantly improved the processor.

According to Engadget the sensor is 15% larger not 50%. No optical image stabilization either. So it'll probably be better than iPhone 5 (I hope they got rid of the purple issue) but nothing special compared to other phones on the market.

No. just no. And here's why:

If there is to be a huge fuss made about these devices, which cost a couple of percent of the value of a car (And a far less of a status symbol, sorry fanboys), then yes, I expect something new, something different.

I'm fully aware of how far smartphones have come since I owned a Motorola A925, but if these devices are to command such price tags, and such attention (Some of which is not down to Apple), then I expect something of substance.

The iPhone 5s is nothing new. not that there's anything necessarily wrong with that, but when you have the weight of expectation on you, you need to hit it out the park.

There is one question that needs to be answered when it comes to new devices such as this, and that's 'Does this device stand up on it's merits alone', and in this case, I have to say no. The value proposition just isn't there if you own a 4 or a 4s.

Exactly. It's not so long ago that the best DSLRs were only 8mp, and they were fine for purpose.

More megapixels means more pixels crammed onto a sensor, which means more noise. Not to mention stupidly huge picture sizes. All these people who want 12mp sensors, seriously how many of them are going to be viewing their pics at poster size?

Yep the iPhone 5 has a 7.99 Megapixel camera. However the LENS of the camera which is the limiting factor of the camera system can only resolve 4.91 megapixels.

We do not have a cost effective technology that can grind glass any more precisely for a camera of this size. So even if you put a 500 megapixel sensor under the current lens, you'd still get 4.91 megapixels of detail. If you upscaled the lower resolution photo it would have an identical level of detail pixel for pixel.

The Galaxy S4 which has a much larger 13 megapixel camera, only resolve 6.1 megapixels at the lens. Meaning over 50% of it's resolution is a complete waste for capturing detail, compared the iPhone's 39%.

Now it is somewhat useful to oversample not for resolution data but for color and contrast and shadow data because in reality cameras use math to figure out which color is which and this accuracy improves with oversampling detail, and with higher resolution you have lower tone gradation and better color detail, but these are very limited benefits and you'd only want oversample by a bit.

Despite Apple's assurances, I wonder how long it will take the NSA to figure out how to remotely hack a 5S and get all of our finger prints.

A lot more time than it would take them to do a fingerprint swab of your car or door handle.
