WHAT IS MISSING is a way to manage ipads in larger numbers in a cost-effective and efficient way. I work in IT in a large private school. We have three ipad cards that have not been used in years because it became a full-time job to manage updates, software installations, etc., and the 3rd party ways to manage them were too expensive. We currently have no plans to replace these iPad 2s and have been on Chromebooks for a few years. $25/device for the lifetime of the device to manage and its all web-based management.

Apple, we would love to use all of this. But if we have to manage dozens of iPads individually, it's not going to happen. Whole districts have bailed on iPads for management reasons alone. It's a major piece if apple is really going to be successful in education.

They should have touched on this. As I said above, maybe this is part of Schoolwork and Classroom and will be discussed in the other sessions (perhaps it's too "dry" for the main presentation).

"This is something only Apple can do."

What, build a $300 computer for students and expect educators to sign off on it when it doesn’t have a keyboard? lmao. Being this stupid and delusional IS something only Apple can do.

Doesn't have a keyboard, no mouse support, no external monitor support, can't connect to most of the USB devices they might want to, extremely limited software and almost no multi-tasking.

Slam dunk.

This is the competition. A $329 Chrome OS tablet with Android app support and an included Wacom EMS stylus.

Do any of these companies talk to teachers??? The killer device is a touchscreen with smart stylus support with a keyboard in a clamshell laptop design for under $350. On top of that, it needs a management solution for the classroom (not IT) that is not a huge extra cost.

I'm a pretty clam person, but you people have me yelling at my laptop!

Don't be a defeatist. Did Linus Torvalds give up and say - 'I can't build better OSs for servers'. No!

The world needs an 'open education system' - that takes/borrows/steals all the good things you want to keep from Apple and Google, and makes it open so that students benefit. Let Apple and Google make all the hardware they want, just make sure that hardware works with that open education system. Apple and Google will still make their money via planned obsolesce.

The crime is putting education's future in the hands of some corporation:

Bull crap.

While I might agree with your sentiments, Linus was not bounded by monetary elements. At least not in the beginning.
School districts, and public education in general, are.

I am curious if it will have the silent laminated display or the drumlike one from the Air 1 and iPad 2017. :) If it will be laminated, I say byebye to my Air2 and Apple can have my Money :)

Are there already the dimensions of the new iPad? Especially the thickness would be interesting. Near to iPad Air 2 and iPad Pro = laminated. If it will be thik as the Air 1 and iPad '17, you will get Pencil-Drumclasses ...

Same, I might actually consider this if they've finally laminated the display like the Pros. The lack of multi-user support might still prevent me from getting it though. I refuse to buy an iPad for every member of my family like Apple wants, so multi-user support is needed for an optimal experience.

The present and future of education isn't proprietary iBooks or proprietary apps. It's web-based learning with online textbooks and portals like Moodle and Webassign. ChromeOS is just as good for that as anything else.

iOS has a place for deeper learning in certain subjects where proprietary apps can truly be a value add, but on the whole I'm afraid ChromeOS has won this battle.

Also, how can I fake being a student to get the 200GB of free iCloud storage?

Am I the only one thinking the new iPad is pretty jam packed for $300?

I'd like to see a price drop for the pencil though...it's the only thing keeping me from buying one .

^^^^no you are not - this is a no brainier for regular customers but needed to come down to $249 for schools and even at that priced its a tough sell if you have to add a keyboard and pencil for each student.

The biggest problem I see with the iPad is that any school that has any investment in Chromebooks won't be interested, and new Chromebooks can be bought for half the price of the iPad. Pencil support is cool though.

So you are setting a budget for a school getting a device...

You can purchase Apple world:
  • iPad $299
  • Pencil $99
  • Keyboard Case $99
For a total of $497 per student.

Or you can purchase Google world:
  • Chromebook $199 to $249
For a total of $249 a student.

For most school districts this comes down to cost.

Precisely. I bet Superintendent is going to ask money for the $249/student :)

Your idea of "many" must be very different from mine. People who want to use a pencil on a tablet are few and far between.

Apple used to make fun of the stylus.

Apple made fun of NEEDING a stylus to navigate the UI. Context matters. They’d still make fun of phones with tiny UI elements and a resistive screen.

So the store is back up and basically it's just the new iPad?

Pricing for both the iPad pro and the iPad mini now looks ridiculous.

And due to the fact that HomePod is still not available in Germany I am now declaring this product dead.
