Am I the only one thinking the new iPad is pretty jam packed for $300?

I'd like to see a price drop for the pencil though...it's the only thing keeping me from buying one .

I've been thinking about upgrading from my iPad mini 2 (we're talking an A5 processor and no Touch ID- ancient by today's standards) to something newer, and this new 9.7 might fit the bill.

For $329? Very tempting.

What is the difference between the iPad Pro and this new iPad released today? Why would anyone get an iPad Pro now? That’s all I need to know.

A ton. Smart connector, faster processor, screen, stereo speakers, probably RAM?, I am sure others I am missing. This is an iPad refresh with pencil support tacked on. While definitely a huge plus, not an iPad Pro.

It's such a shame when you consider how hard Apple used to push the Mac for education, but the Classroom app being ported over to the Mac two full years later shows how the Mac is now simply treated as an afterthought.

Too many laws. In California, the biggest problem would be student privacy laws. I like the sentiment, but it would be very difficult to implement. The only platform that I know of that has had any success with this is Moodle, and even then, most of their momentum was sucked up when Google Classroom came along.

You don't think there are systems running in the cloud that implement HIPAA rules? (https://www.hhs.gov/hipaa/index.html) All you've done is defined a requirement.

I feel you. Apple has neglected too many areas for too long. Too many school districts had bad experiences with iPads and you can’t get them back without listening to the users about its biggest shortcomings. They haven’t addressed them. Although it’s a little step in the right direction, the competition in the meanwhile take three big steps in the right direction. Apple refuses to listen to it’s shortcomings and it’s not only showing in education. More and more people realize they don’t need über priced iPads or computers. They were willing to pay that in the past because there wasn’t any good alternative. Fast forward today: Apple is still über priced but also lagging in offering what the competition already addressed. It’s the arrogance they still think they’re king that they feel justified to ask high prices. Dear Tim Cook: Apple is getting out of date. Don’t you really get it? Look around you and see for yourself. You’re right though: you can only seeing coming that from Apple. It’s a mantra that worked in the past but is shameful today.

I think that the cardinal sin was to give up on eMacs, especially if they believed that iPads could compete in the educational system. They should’ve kept going with laptops, maybe based off the plastic Macbook, call it eMacBook or whatever, all with an iCloud based system. Then augment it all with ePads.

Holy cow, that was boring. I knw- not a general announcement, and I have zero doubt for educators, it was interesting. But for me... I had fooled myself into believing they would have more hardware than the iPad to announce. The iPad sounds nice but the rest of the announcements for me were dull. And notice, please... "for me." It was not a general market gathering- which, of course, they had said ahead of time.

What was announced didn’t really seem like enough for an event. The new iPad could easily have been announced via press release. It’s almost like Apple had an event just to say hey we care about education too.

I think it was just Apple rising the white flag in the educational system.

Be interesting to know if the new iPad supports fast charging. Its annoying that the 9.7 inch pro didn't.

Yes. School boards want to give away user data to Google in exchange for ultra cheap devices. Nothing bad can possibly happen out of that.

Not just the hardware but no Apple version of G-Suite?? I would have been happy with no hardware at all, just a comprehensive iCloud management system, whats the point of announcing Apple hardware when you can't deploy or manage them easily, lets not forget how good G-Suite has become especially with the free unlimited storage for teachers. Roll on Chrome Book domination..wow talk about out of touch Apple. I am so shocked they completely ignored the biggest reason why Google have done so well in schools. :(:(:(

Does Apple still make Macs?
I ask myself the same question and I’m wondering. Although I bought the 5K iMac in juni 2017 and now the Bluetooth already broke. No connection to my magic mice and keyboard

For a hardware company the size of Apple, there is unbelievable little coming out of the gate. If Dell or HP had the same development cycles they would have been out of business years ago.

These last 6 years are peak Apple and ready to go downhill. Sooner or later it will show off in the profits.

What would you all say to this vs. a refurbished 9.7 in ipad pro I saw going for $350?

Since the refurb iPad Pro is compatible with the Apple Smart Keyboard, get the refurb. Also, the refurb iPad Pro shoots 4K video and has better colour adaptability. Don’t listen to those who say to use an external keyboard with the iPad Pro. I’m typing lightning fast on an apple Smart Keyboard right now, and it also serves as the iPad cover.

Edit: the new iPad 9.7 has the A10 processor and the old iPad Pro 9.7 has the A9.

For all those saying it was a boring event, what did you expect? They clearly stated it was an educational event and it wasn't even live-streamed.

If Apple really wanted to get into the education market they'd work on a cheap Macbook for schools similar to a Chromebook. I certainly can't do school tasks on an iPad.

Yep, as much as Apple is dead here, it's not like I favor spending even 200 a student on chromebooks. Students aren't learning PC skills. These are basically browsers or turning in half baked papers. They stopped teaching grammar at my daughter's middle school. I'm not sure she's even been assigned a paper to do yet in middle school and it's 7th grade. She's never had a test in science. They don't do it. No textbooks. Not even digital ones. It's all worksheets.

If not for the fact we've always had a Mac or PC in house and I've taught her over the years, my daughter wouldn't have a clue how to use Word, Excel, Adobe, an email program like Outlook, etc.

I'd prefer to see Apple release some cheap eMacbooks and get back to teaching students relevant skills.

That partially answers my question, however I have the iPad Pro 9.7 inch, which is mentioned on that page. As far as I can tell, the “new” iPad released today doesn’t have the Apple Smart Keyboard connectors at the bottom, and thus must be used with an external Bluetooth keyboard. It also doesn’t have the TrueTone display (?).

The one thing the new 9.7 inch iPad does have is a better processor than the 2016 9.7 inch iPad Pro model.
