Not that I'm trying to push my healthy practice on anyone, but here's what I do every time a new iPhone is about to be introduced:

I look at the usual pipe dream razor thin / tapered edge / edge-to-edge display mockups and think, "guys, it ain't happening this time either. Apple can bend metal, but they can't bend the laws of physics."

As a consumer I'm disappointed, but I can see that there really is no business case for a major redesign. When you have the #1 and #2 selling smart-phones on the marker, it makes no sense to change too much.

And to all those people that were complaining about why do a white iPhone 4 at the end of its cycle, well you finally have your official answer.

All said, I'll be waiting for iPhone 5 to upgrade from my 3G.

The biggest story is probably....

the free 3gs with contract. Seriously....most people that are NOT super savvy and are just waiting for an "iPhone" will jump at this. It's free, it's most likely now on their carrier, and then can now have an iPhone. Ya, they can't play the top-level games, or talk to their phone in normal language, but they can do 95% percent of the same stuff and it is free.

I bet 3gs outsells 4s.

My personal recap:
  • Siri - Looked like a case of deceptive advertising. Made it sound like it'd answer ANY question, then they pulled up a list at the end of the limited things it'll really do - which happened to be what they demoed.
  • iPhone 4S - Why 4S and not just call it the iPhone 5? This phone has almost nothing in common with the iPhone 4. To me this is a huge marketing screw-up as many folks will continue to wait for the rumored iPhone 5. World mode is a huge plus, but no 4G is laughable for a supposed top of the line phone.
  • iPod nano - Very cool, but the price is starting to look a bit high. When will developers get access to put apps on this?
  • iPod touch - Nothing new?
  • geofence - Lot's of potential if Apple's model for this catches on - but apparently they don't have a catchy name for it yet?
  • iMessage - What happened to iChat?
  • iCloud - Yawn, I still don't want my personal stuff in the cloud. Amazon will be doing this stuff next month for half the price.
  • Cards - $2.99 for something so impersonal as a printed card sent by Apple?

Don't get me wrong, the 4S is very cool hardware for the iPhone, and the new iOS 5 features are welcome! Nano looks nice. But, no wonder there was no live streaming. I still suspect Jobs' big ego set things up to come across as underwhelming on their first significant announcement under new leadership.

Who was HONESTLY naïve enough to expect more than an incremental upgrade? Honestly? This upgrade is clearly for superfans and 3G(s) owners. You really can't go running around expecting them to add 15 big new hardware features every year, can you? If you do, I'm sorry, but your expectations are horribly unrealistic.

Yeah, I'm not even sure how much more can be upgraded, minus just incremental spec increases.

I'm wondering if the 4S was exactly as shown, but was just aesthetically different, how many "disappointed" people would change their mind?

I'm actually pretty stoked about the improved camera, we take a ton of pictures, especially when were on a trip, and it's not always convenient to lug a DSLR, and even the better P&S cameras are still kind of bulky plus a second thing to carry (in addition to a phone).

TO ALL AT&T CURRENT COSTUMERS PLANNING TO GET THIS PHONE: Just remember, if you upgrade, they will lock you on a 24 month contract, meaning that if Apple indeed release the iPhone 5 sometime next Jan or Feb, you wont be able to get until Oct. 2013! as Att does not grant an 18 month period before an upgrade.

I would think twice before getting it folks. 3 more months and we might get what we all expected from Apple.

just my 2 cents.

im not going to be the guy waiting for a unicorn nextgen iphone release. Beginning of the year is ipad 3. I wouldnt be surprised if the phone is permanently in an oct cycle now. Buy it now.

Not to be mean and blunt but this is COMPLETELY incorrect. I have had AT&T since the first iPhone. Each 12 month period I have been exclusively offered to upgrade my 2 year contract to purchase the new iPhone (3gs, 4) at the $199.00 price point and extend my contract.

I understand what you are saying...you WOULD be locked for probably 12 months...but AT&T makes money when you extend your contract.

well, $300 for a 32gb to replace my current 32gb?

It was a no-brainer to spend on the 4 but for this 4s, as wonderful as the features are, its giving me pause.

I have two lines staggered in terms of upgrade, one currently eligible and one coming up in ~6mos.

I may do as an earlier poster suggested, get the new one and sell it (for twice the price).

Really don't care, if I got my 3GS just before the 4 was released and be content, I will do the same with the 4s.

Not surprising with this lackluster release.

Apple stock fell 4% after iPad introduction of Jobs.

iPad was more or less the most successful product Apple has ever come up with.

So stop looking at stock and trying to use it as an excuse for your disappointment.

lol wtf?, here in denmark the iphone 3gs costs 482usd while in the us its free? or am i missing something?

and wtf is up with the person who always takes there time to downvote my posts, i didn't even write anything offending...

Apple could be the next (to a slightly lesser extent) nintendo trying to make the most out of a product but then soon realise they've compramised their integrity and position in the global maker.

Sorry but the new "Cards" app is just.. I mean.... ?

It's a spin on what you could do in iPhoto for ages. Which while on its own isn't perhaps impressive it could be a sign that they are looking at merging more computer tasks with the mobile devices and that is a bit more exciting. Because there are many tasks that it is silly you could do on your computer and not on your device (make photo albums, mailboxes etc as other examples)

Would hope there's a GM so devs could get their apps up to par but we shall see.

isn't that what the 7 betas were for. If you don't have your app ready for one finally test run and then submit at this point that's not Apple's fault. They gave you the info ages ago

There's no way they're introducing a redesigned iPhone today. Otherwise, they wouldn't be spending over an hour of their time talking about all this stuff that got covered at WWDC. They'd get right to the new design.

nope. this is the style of all keynotes, new design or not

So now it's worth mentioning in a keynote that sending an e-card is free, compared to the traditional method of actually getting of your fat backside and putting a real card in the post?

I think you missed the point. Folks send ecards because they are cheap and easy, rather than taking the time to go and actually put in some effort to pick out a card. Now, Apple is saying, you can send a real card that is even more personal than the stuff at Hallmark but using a way that is barely more effort than sending an ecard.

Good work apple already dropping $9 dollars today what other **** do you have for us !!!!!

happens every time. it drops because some of the folks that believed the rumors decide to sell out. in a day or two those that liked what they saw will pick up some shares a bit cheaper and be happy. especially when it jumps up over the release day sales numbers

Without Steve Jobs' charisma, we are starting to see some early signs of Apple without him at the helm.

you do get that this was all designed and produced while Steve was still CEO and got the final vote. Some of it even perhaps before he went on leave. Even the decision to move the iPhone releases to the fall was likely while he was still the big dog.

Honestly we won't see anything that wasn't touched by Steve Jobs CEO for at least another year, perhaps 2-3 thanks to the simple truth that tech isn't created overnight. Especially when he is still in the kitchen as Chairman

so why couldnt they just release this in june?

we don't know that they couldn't. merely that they choose not to. The reasons may have nothing to do with the iPhone
