That's not how major sites are updated. They are updated by switching from a server that is running the old site to a server that is running the new site. It should literally take a couple seconds, if that. This looks like someone failed to set the permissions on the new server correctly, so visitors to their site are getting "Access Denied" messages. Thus, bad form.

I'm not saying that this is a terrible thing, the end of the world, or anything, just that someone goofed. Apple is usually better about the details than that...

Nothing to do with permissions. What has happened is the process that serves dynamic content (Webobjects here, which I believe runs on Java, so probably Websphere or Tomcat) -- anyway, that crashed under the load, and now the front end (most likely Apache) had nothing to send back to you (since it relies on webobjects for that), so you just get permission denied (because it's configured to not list directory contents).

IMVHO, they should really have static content ready for these events, pushed out over Akamai or the MS CDN.

In their defense, I think they didn't directly compare 'installed numbers' or anything, but 'adoption rate'. Everyone knows Windows has more than 10x times the share of OS X.

No matter what it's seriously stupid to compare Mac to PC sales right now. Just wait until Windows 8 comes out.

"Nobody" seems to be buying millions of Android powered phones with larger screens and larger overall device sizes.

The market for a larger iPhone exists despite what you or Tim Cook may think.

Sorry but millions are also buying this size. Or even smaller sized phones. So that's not really an argument. Apple chose this size and they are continuing with it. They may make it bigger, or they may not. As you realize, Apple does not offer multiple new devices. They offer only one. So if they increase the size, that'll make many people happy, and at the same time will make many people unhappy. And I don't see them going iPhone Large and iPhone Small.

They were comparing percentages after 20 weeks of release, so it still was an idiotic comparison.

Reading this thread reminds me of what happens when people believe every word that comes out of the rumor mill. Who was HONESTLY naïve enough to expect more than an incremental upgrade? Honestly? This upgrade is clearly for superfans and 3G(s) owners. You really can't go running around expecting them to add 15 big new hardware features every year, can you? If you do, I'm sorry, but your expectations are horribly unrealistic.

agreed. also wondering if half of the complainers bothered to read up on the rumors and speculation the past 2 months. this was more or less expected. and, this whole disappointment trend is same thing after 3G-->3GS

Technology marches and progresses fast, but not fast enough to completely redesign, test and market an entire product every single year.

That said, hopefully what they're cooking up for the iPhone 5 (or 6...whatever they'll call it) is good or people may actually have some validity in their complaints.

To all the 3G(s) people out there, enjoy your upgrade on the 14th! For us iP4 people...you still have a helluva phone. if you have the cash, go get a new one. if not, you're not missing out too too too much...

Macrumors, really? "teardrop", "larger screen", "curved glass"? Shame on you for spreading false rumor after false rumor!

I'm not sure I understand the disappointment. This is pretty much in line with the more believable rumors. And the bigger screen rumor always seemed silly (I couldn't imagine them making the iPhone wider).

The nice things about the 4S (many of which were very much expected):

* Increased performance. I'll be interested to see how much of a difference this actually is. I wonder if they have 1GB of RAM now? The speed bump between the 3G to the 3GS changed the entire usability of the phone, though I don't think this will be that dramatic of a difference, but performance is very important for mobile devices.
* 1080P video, nicer camera in general.
* Sprint (for those of us in the U.S.)
* Same phone for both CDMA and GSM
* 64GB version (this I wasn't expecting, but I know at least one person who was hoping for this)

What I am wondering is what is the unlock situation. They claim it's a "world phone" but that implies that it is unlocked. Any chance of the subsidized versions being unlocked? If not, what is an unlocked version going to cost? Does it support T-Mobile 3G frequencies? (I imagine it would)

I'm currently using a 3GS (which I'm still quite happy with) and out of contract on AT&T. So this is an exciting time for me, as I have my choice of phone and carrier. I'm considering Android as well (as a developer who does a lot of Java, I've always been interested in it), and waiting to see what the Nexus Prime will be like.

It makes me laugh all the people saying they are waiting for the iphone 5... that wont be till next October!!!!

But that's the thing, the 4S really isn't that big of a deal compared to the 4... I doubt THAT many people are fussed about Siri, nor the slightly better camera or upgraded CPU, most people wanted a complete new design and a full board of specs that would rival the top end Android handsets, but the fact of the matter is, the 4S isn't that. It's just a spec bump, at a time when Apple really needed to up its game.

wow. well, I'm not surprised. I'd been saying for a long time that two iPhone models (4s and 5) didn't make sense from a business standpoint, and that they'd only come out with one new phone.

so now we know that even the WSJ gets it wrong (not as credible as we thought).

does anyone know if the iPhone finally got wifi-n?? I was a little disappointed not to see that in the live coverage.

Have you noticed the decrease in Standby time:

It's now 3g heavier too ;)

WHAT! No multicam!?

Also, I will not be running for president. Just thought everyone should know. Anyone else not running?

</sarcasm>

Seriously though, the 4S sounds pretty rad to me. A dramatic improvement over the 4. The FCPX launch was bungled by Apple. Today's announcement, despite what all the crybabies are saying, was NOT. If they'd slapped a tapered aluminum back on it and called it "5", 90% of you wouldn't be slitting your wrists or threatening to switch to Android. LOL.

Yeah, I know you also want edge-to-edge screen; but the Retina Display is still pretty damn fine. As a 3GS owner, I still drool when I see a 4, because the display is soooooo much crisper. Whereas, I was at a wedding the other day, and someone had a phone (Android, maybe?) with a 3D camera/display, took a pic, and showed off the 3D... and I just thought, that's cute. I mean, I'm sure whatever it was is a very compentent and lovely device, but I personally prefer the Apple ecosystem, and am not willing to abandon it (and all the apps I use daily) for tech gimmicks. Just my .02.

Are those new faster download speeds only on AT&T or also on VZ and Sprint?

I would also like to know more about these download speeds between AT&T and Verizon.

Also, wonder if in real world use, you will be able to tell any difference from the current phone.

My personal recap:

iPhone 4S - Why 4S and not just call it the iPhone 5? This phone has almost nothing in common with the iPhone 4. To me this is a huge marketing screw-up as many folks will continue to wait for the rumored iPhone 5. World mode is a huge plus, but no 4G is laughable for a supposed top of the line phone.
.

Not a marketing screw-up.

Had they branded this iPhone 5, consumer perception would have fallen extremely fast. 5 branding would have created expectation of a redesign because that is how consumers think. New name/number = new case/new look.

4S signifies minor tweaks...which design wise is the truth.

wow what a massive disappointment!!

I'm an apple fan, but comon!! A new camera, chip, and 64gigs - calling it "all new inside" are you ********** kidding me? This is the same stunt they pulled with 3G to 3GS. They're just out to make money! Next year, we're going to have the iPhone 5, which will, actually, be redesigned...but guess what apple - I'm not upgrading to your piece of ****** iPhone 4S, because my contract isn't up for another 10 months...so I'll stick with my 3GS, which runs perfectly fine, plus I don't take that many pics with my phone, I have a 12 megapixel DSLR for that....
