That may be true, but it does seem very similar to what vlingo have been doing for a while. It's probably true that there will be more polish on siri, but it's not really that revolutionary IMO
I understand your point, but I'm certainly hoping for a MUCH more robust and reliable product than vlingo, not to mention one far more tightly integrated with the OS, and hopefully one without privacy issues as well.

Time will tell, though...

IOS has become like those souped up honda civics that ever looked back in 1999 with parts bolted on to make it faster and better but in the end it was a mess that had to be dumped ....

Sorry apple you are starting to fail..

It makes no sense to release a newly designed phone when many people will still be on their 2 year contract from buying the iPhone 4. June 2012 will see a redesigned iPhone.

I'm annoyed

I QUEUED to get the original iPhone on the day of release here in the UK

Got slapped when they released the 3G, hate the plastic back felt so cheap in comparison to the original

Got the 3GS, put up with the back

Got slapped in the face by the networks here in the UK that withdrew unlimited data when the 4 came out. Hence stuck with my unlimited data 3GS....finally i thought Apple would reward us early adopters with new internals and new design.

But No, we get the iPhone 4S, undoubtedly with antennagate still in tact...So I guess i'll sit back and get on the 5 bandwagon next year!

There's no such things as an unlocked CDMA phone. THe tech isn't written that way. Which is why you can't get a phone on Verizon, and then jump ship to Sprint etc.

Actually, you technically could. You can get a phone on Verizon and take it to a Sprint store and ask if they'll encode the phone to work on their network. It's technologically possible. But they're not going to be willing to (and thus I'm not saying you're wrong, I'm just expanding upon that point).

This sounds ridiculous. Why wouldn't you just be able to call Sprint and say "I want to active my unlocked iPhone; here's my ESN" and have them do it? I have a really hard time believing this isn't technically possible; afterall Sprint phones roam on Verizon all the time.

It's not that simple. On GSM phones, the data that identifies your phones as yours is stored on the Subscriber Identity Module, also known as the SIM card. On CDMA phones, that data is encoded in the phone. Roaming is a different situation; the phone and the towers will identify each other as being from different networks, and your useage information goes back to the carrier that your phone indicates (how else do you think companies keep track of roaming charges?). This situation is changing, as all Verizon LTE phones use a SIM card instead of encoding the phone (due to the LTE specification), so eventually Verizon and (whenever they finally get their LTE stuff sorted out) Sprint will have the kind of portability GSM users have been enjoying for the past few years.

Even without a redesign this is far and away the most powerful phone out there. It will take Android handset makers another year to match this. That, and I'm thrilled that Apple is offering a 64GB option this year--its shows that they are not going to force everyone to use the cloud like certain Android handset makers are moving toward. All in all, great update and I'd buy if I wasn't still under contract with my iPhone 4.

You have to be kidding me. The iPhone 4S is weaker than the Galaxy S II in some regards. Among the weak points, the 4S is limited to 14.4 Mbps HSPA+ while the GSII can speed along at 21 Mbps (42 Mbps if you get T-Mobile's version of it). Furthermore, the 64GB option is ridiculously expensive. Ever heard of SD cards? Android phones can use them for expansion. In addition, Apple is far more cloud-happy than pretty much all the major Android OEMs with their iCloud. On the other hand, Google does offer plenty of cloud-based services, but most of these are accessible to iOS users as well as Android users. If you look at a spec sheet straight-up, Apple is the one playing catch-up. Did they surpass their competition? Maybe. I'll wait for Anand's benchmarks for that conclusion. But the 4S is hardly the most impressive hardware-wise.

This presentation seemed spot on to what I had thought.

iPhone 4S – same design updated specs.
Big camera/video change.
Siri is neat but wish it was optional on the iPhone 4.

Guessing the main reason for the "delay" was the Verizon model in January and White in late Spring.
Don't want to "piss" off the newly purchased iPhone models.

Like the Reminders, notifications and the Camera on Lock Screen.

**Anyone thinking a totally revamped iPhone 5 was foolish indeed.

Did anyone notice the iPhone 4S can output 1080P video as well as shoot/play it, looks like the AppleTV will be getting an upgrade...

To a degree, this was much what I expected. Considering that I didn't upgrade from an iPhone 1 until the iPhone 4 came out, I never expected just one generation away to make me feel I have to get it. I don't trade phones that fast. I'll wait for the next one, or maybe even the one after that.

Of course, iOS5 was the news I was waiting for. For both myself and friends and family. October 12th can't come too soon.

Even the 64gb is a bit of a gimmick, great for willy wavers but with iCloud coming now there is no massive need for 64gb so it is just an excuse for Apple to make some more money out of willy wavers

----------

I haven't heard ONE PERSON on this site ask for a 4.7" screen, so don't be a dipstick please.
(4" would make many people happier)

Same, I would have been very happy with 4"

3.5 in this day and age is just inadequate

Um, iCloud doesn't sync video (yet)... So there is still a good use for all the space.

Dear MacRumors members,

I asked Siri for the home address for each of you and it told me every one. Yoo-hoo, it works!

Now I'm using the Cards app to send you each a card. Watch for it in the mail.

I admit it

I admit I was wrong. I really thought there would be an iPhone 5. Still happy to finally get confirmation of iPhone on Sprint so I will probably go buy it. Just have to think about, should I buy the 4S now and get locked in for 22 months or wait until June (Oct?) for the 5?

Have to give this some serious thought.

Just sold my 32gb iPhone 4 for £282 on o2 website. Pretty good price and will cover the price of the upgrade nicely. It may not have a new case, but I am all over it for the vastly improved internals.

this thread is absolutely HILARIOUS!!! i can't get enough. you would think that it's the end of the world for some people!!!

There is also a difference between careful, rational, incremental upgrading of proven design, while expanding upon economies of scale versus trying to satisfy a bullet point list. If AAPL did the later, we'd be whining about the 2 hour battery lives in our iOS flash-compatible devices. The 4s is "evolutionary", not "revolutionary", and I've no problem with that.

I also would be willing to wager your BBC fellow rather ends up with egg on his face when we see the various ways Siri in implemented. Siri is NOT Google voice.

But yes, I know, no tapered case, no 3.7 inch screen, the horror...

I don't care for the tapered case etc etc, I don't care about any of that, but the majority of the world was looking at Apple and waiting for the iPhone 5 to be released, and it wasn't, that's more what I'm saying, what was released was a mild spec bump that Apple tried to pass off as a completely new phone, when it really isn't.

I find it strange Apple can release the iPhone 4 in both black and white, but not with 16GB storage, that's what I, and probably a lot of people were after, a cheaper 16GB iPhone 4, skip the colours, just keep it in black and have 8 and 16gb and close the gab even tighter between the 4 and 4s, considering there's so little in it...

Can anyone please clarify one detail for me?
Will the new iphone be immediately available in the UK (Oct 7 pre-order/Oct 14 available) in a pay as you go option from the Apple store, or can you only buy it with a contract of some sort?
