USB is consumer grade technology hence why their consumer grade product has it.

Thunderbolt is professional grade technology which is why their consumer grade product does not have it.

Yet their even cheaper MacBook Air has it. :)

Chances are MacBook Air line will be gone in 2 years.

Can you say special (proprietary) adapters for only $49-$69 each... coming soon to your Apple store?

USB-C isn't proprietary. There will be a ton of adapters available for this in no time, from $5 usb hubs to fancy docking stations (which have always been sorely lacking from the Apple laptop family).

There's lots of speculation around "how long will it last... Or when will it be obsolete.

I think Apple may have a much bigger problem than those two questions.

As one who is a collector of expensive luxury timepieces, it's not about pricing but rather heritage, style, craftsmanship, and exclusivity. Apple has none of those.

It's going to have to be able to stand on its own, no matter how many health features it offers. Often the "deal breaker" of any brand new product in a new segment, is public acceptance.

Thats why Apple's Newton failed to sell.

Wow....

I may not be the target market for the new Macbook (I need ports and I like only having one computer for everything) but it is quite impressive none the less.

I'll be interested in testing this force-touch pad at the Apple store.

It will probably be obsolete tech wise in 2-3 years. It will be slow, not able to run latest OS efficiently, etc.

Pretty much what iBug2 said. The iWatch is a lot more specific than the iDevices. You might see a few new apps show up from 3rd party developers, but they won't do anything to tax the hardware like what you'd see on, say, the iPad. They'll basically be alternatives to what Apple's offering for it now, without much in the way of expanded capabilities.

Basically, you'll only need to update the OS if you've got new hardware to justify it, which you won't need unless you get a new iWatch. So I'm thinking you won't see multiple versions of an OS on one set of hardware, more like a new version of the OS to match the newest hardware coming out.

Is there a Facetime camera on the watch? That would be just like Dick Tracy, talking and being able to see who you were talking to on your watch. AND sending them a real time heartbeat!!

No - no facetime camera yet. Are you insane - why would anyone need a camera on their watch?! There isn't ONE use case that makes sense for having a camera on a watch. What is WRONG WITH YOU ;)

(this is what i heard when I suggested the iPad 1 should have had one)

Even worse, it's not really that good looking of a watch.

This is really the crux of the matter for me. All Apple products, including simple adaptors, have a certain style and design, that, to me, is beautiful. This watch does not have it. I cannot stand the rectangular face. It does not work as a masculine watch very well and it won't work well as a female watch either.

If it was a good looking watch, then I wouldn't mind paying $1000 odd for the stainless steel model.

I am also confused why Apple chose the "edition" to be yellow gold. Yellow gold has gone out of fashion ages ago and is considered tacky. White gold and platinum is where it's at these days.

Except the MBA is consumer grade and has Thunderbolt. And the outgoing MBP has it too.

Btw, they didn't say anything about a USB-C to TB converter did they?

How are people going to use the Thunderbolt docks they bought for their MacBooks with this thing?

You mean craning your neck down to talk like that or hold your arm up with wrist facing you for five minutes or more? Sorry but that's not appealing. Worse, you need the phone to make that work. It can't autonomously do FaceTime.

It's far better to use FaceTime on the phone or desktop.

In the UK the difference in prices for the highest and lowest price SS watch is £420. That's £420 for just a strap  Crazy times we live in

theres a rose gold option as well

Already have a few Rolexes. In fact, I'm willing to bet that the people who are interested in this $16,000 first-generation Apple Watch already own a Rolex. I don't think this product is aimed towards the mass consumers. I don't see who Apple is going to sell 10 millions of these Special Editions. I love collecting watches, but there's no way in hell I'll be getting one of these.

Agree. Own a Rolex and the omega dark side of the moon is looking like a bargain compared to this junk ..... Had they had an upgrade programe etc, there might have been a reason, but not for an item that will be very outdated 1-2 years.

:D I want to see who I'm talking to on my wrist. I won't send my heart beat to just anyone. :D

Just wait. It will be coming on version 2.

That's the thing I hated the most. They touted thunderbolt all this time and their signature Macbook doesn't even have it anymore?

Yeah, this one has me annoyed, but I am looking at the side of my rMBP and for the new Macbook to be thinner, it has to go.

While Apple has been largely bullet-proof for a few years now, I really think this is a major misstep. The Apple watch looks and feels like Hubris, and I think it will come back to bite them. And if Tim Cook personally pushed for this, I think it will come back to haunt him. Or if not Tim, whomever was pushing this agenda. And no, I don't think it was in the pipeline while SJ was alive. This nonsense came from someone/some group else. The thinking behind this is just terrible. "We'll invent a product which no-one wants and no-one needs (because, no-one wears a watch anymore except as a fashion accessory, thanks to the smartphone, which we helped invent), and we'll make them want it and we'll sell it for a bunch of money, because we are Apple and we can do anything". I mean, the thinking behind this whole thing is either faulty, at best, or arrogant, at worst.

I have been trying to sum up my feelings about this whole Apple Watch fashion targeting thing and the best I could come up with is disgusting and extravagant. Your post sums up how I also feel. It feels like Apple has been invaded by fashionistas in $1000 pants.

I think the watch is cool and seems useful. I mean when they came out with the ipad, it was just "a bigger iphone." The edition watch is for people who live in an alternate reality but for normal people the other two watches seem fine. Not sure why people are saying the watch is hubris or tim cook's failure or whatever.

Hubris because Apple trying to-reinvent a product category which has almost ceased to exist (the watch, which almost no-one any longer wears except as a fashion accessory because everyone has their smart phone with them at all times, and Apple helped invent the smart phone) because hey, we're Apple and we can do anything we want and make the masses love it, because, hey, you know, we're Apple, and we're going to re-invent this all-but-obsolete product and sell it to you at a premium, and make you love it. Understand, if they can actually pull this off, great, more power to them. Tim Cooks's failure because, as CEO, if this thing backfires/fails, he'll take the brunt of the blame for it, because it happened on his watch (pun intended). That's all.

I am not sure that is possible considering how TB works. Then again, I am not up to date on how USB-C works.

Omg.... Just checked, that is insane ! Apart from the sport edition the rest are a huge ripoff. On a good note, the sports has the same functionality and power of the edition.
