Apple is doing market research huh?

Of course they are. They ALWAYS have. Mistakes? Yeah, I remember the dark days of Sculley. I understand mistakes Apple has made.

The HUGE difference now is that when Apple was doing market research before, they were DRIVING the market.

Apple was INNOVATING and things like the hockey puck and the G4 Cube were REVOLUTIONARY at the time.

There is a huge difference between INNOVATING in a market space and IMITATING what is already in a market space.

Apple used to DRIVE technology so those "mistakes" you mention are part of that process.

Risk vs reward.

If Apple was risk averse at it's inception, there would be NO Apple.

The computer existed when Apple created the first Macintosh.

The MP3 player existed when Apple created the first scroll wheel'd iPod.

The cell phone existed when Apple created the first iPhone.

The tablet existed when Apple created the first iPad.

The desktop PRO computer STILL exists and the Mac Pro I'm working on was delivered to me in December, 2012.

The trouble is that modern day Apple under Tim Cook cannot deliver anything innovative in a timely fashion except revamps.

Maybe they're trying really, really hard to deliver a levitating computer with a clear, foldable, 30" touch display complete with gestures.

I don't need those features.

I need a workstation capable of producing huge trade show graphics one minute and broadcast quality 4k video the next.
It has to be expandable and upgrade able and it has to have connectivity to both newer and legacy peripherals.

Apple used to have their fingers planted squarely on the pulse of their power user. The professionals who would drop tens of thousands on systems in a big shop or the freelancer who would drop everything they could afford in a system for their home office.

Steve made mistakes, but he understood ALL market spaces and how to fill niches within them.

He even created some of those niches because he had vision.

Today's Apple seems to be pretty myopic.
My thoughts exactly.

The one thing I wanted was a processor bump to 6 cores for the iMac. Yawn. By the time you configure a Mac mini up to 6 cores, 2TB, a GPU and a screen you are in iMac Pro territory. Yawn.

I understand. My current original 12.9 iPadPro has slithered off armchairs or tables too often for comfort but it has the silicone back cover (which Apple stopped making) with corner protection. The lack of corner protection on the new 12.9 makes AppleCare+ a must for my peace of mind if nothing else (clumsy/distracted/cats/tile floors).
Hah, I don't have cats, but I have small children. My four year old knows better, but my two year old is still a danger but not bad. I usually stash it in the center console of the couch or on the higher bar countertops in the breakfast nook and keep it on my night stand at night. What I'm more worried about is carrying it all around campus and town going to meetings, but since I changed jobs I have a MBP now so I haven't been bringing it to meetings as much. I might just keep it in my office for doing UI sketches and as an extra display.

Selective data. The installed used base is different.

A huge segment of those iPad sales are for the cheaper non work oriented models (the Mini and 9.7 inch), not the Pro.

The iPad is in a different segment. Compare iPad Pro sales with sales of laptops + desktops + convertibles + Macs and you will get a different story. Also compare sales for work based devices.

And yes.. I was talking about work.

The reality is that a lot of computing is about work. And the iPad Pro is being marketed as a machine for work.
Compare iPad/iPhone sales with literally everything else and you'll see how big mobile computing really is. Apple is focused on the right thing here.

They also still make great laptops if that's what you want.

I have to admit: I'm a little disappointed. In the last years I used a MBP Mid 2014, but now I need a new desktop computer and a monitor. I also have to get a new mouse and keyboard, since I do not have anything lying around.

If I add up all prices now, I end up with a ludicrous sum:

(a) Mac mini 3.2 Ghz i7, 8 GB Ram, 512 GB SSD = 1489 Euro;
(b) An update kit for more memory (32 GB 2666 MHz DDR4 (2 x 16 GB)) = approx. 260 Euro (I would sell the other 8 GB);
(c) LG Ultra Fine 5k Display = 1399 Euro (currently only available in 6-8 weeks)
(d) Apple Magic Keyboard with number pad = 149 Euro
(e) Apple Magic Trackpad 2 = 149 Euro.

In total everything costs me 3446 Euro, minus about 50 Euro, if I sell the built-in RAM for 8 GB. For about 1000 Euro more I can get a refurbished iMac Pro at the Apple Store, which is much better in pretty much everything: 2 cores extra, ECC Ram (although I do not really need it), a much better graphics card, more space on an incredibly fast SSD, 10 GB Ethernet etc. etc.

All in all, the iMac Pro seems to me to be the better choice, at least if it's refurbished. I can even get new iMac Pros with the same equipment from Apple dealers for only a little more money. Sorry, Apple, but I think you really missed the point.

I'm stating that complaining about Apple's pricing policies in an online forum is a waste of everybody's time.

Vote with your wallet.

What do you think you're accomplishing?

This is a sad line of thinking you're taking. I'm on a Mac-related discussion board discussing Mac pricing. You're essentially telling me to shut up because Apple isn't listening to what I say here. A) Why do you think I don't know that? B) Why do you think I'm not also going to vote with my wallet? C) Why the hell do you think you get to tell people what they can and can't discuss? D) Why do you think telling people what Mac-related topics we can talk about on Mac-related discussion boards worth anyone's time, including your's?

If you don't want to discuss pricing, don't. But if your point is that complaining on the internet does no good and won't change Apple's behavior, take a hard look in the minor, because that's exactly what you're doing here. Why do you think telling me not to talk about this is going to change MY behavior? Rationally apply the same principles of your point to me, to your own points. Its by its very definition hypocritical.

Yeah that's what I wanted to do with this one. Run a few headless services + plex. Not sure if I can rationalize the $800.

I think $800 is reasonable but still a lot.

Myin is a 2012 and has been chugging along for 6 years with out a single hickup. I think these can easily last 10+ years always on.

The Quad Core and HEVC decoding is what is tempting me to upgrade. Currently the dual core on the mac mini can handle 2 HEVC streams max. So I a year or two I might start looking for used ones of these again.

Can any of the new mac minis handle eye tv? Because our old 2010 mini and 2013 imac with fusion drive seems to have recording problems in that if they even bother to record, they only record part of a show.

You're taking stuff *WAY* too seriously and falsely claiming things I didn't say. Get over your hissy fit and take that chip off your shoulder. Whine all you want, I never said you couldn't -- I simply stated it's a waste of everybody's time. If that offends you, then maybe you are the one who needs to look in the mirror. (looking in the minor is illegal in most places)

Bye, Sheldon.

At times watching this I felt like my parents/grandparents were on stage telling me about all the "hip" and "groovy" things that Apple has coming out! The presentations are looking a little dated and I don't mean the hardware.
huh? You think Craig Federighi (49), Eddie Cue (54), and Phil Schiller (58) are youthful hipsters?

I actually thought that this was one of Apple's BETTER presentations... both in pacing and style.

Never used hipster (or youthful) in my description more like 60's hip and groovy.

Sigh, if you don't like having your hypocritical behavior explained to you, try not telling people what they can and can't talk about. Don't try to rationalize some distinction between telling someone to shut up and telling them their point is a waste of time. It a functional equivalence. Now, to the ignore list you go. Have fun wasting other peoples time.

Hi,

I just checked the spec of my Mini that sits under the TV and records from EyeTV. It's a Macmini1,1 with Core Duo 1.83 GHz, chugs along on 2GB of memory and has a Hitachi 160GB spinner. That machine was discontinued in 2007, apparently. It records flawlessly from EyeTV 2, using V2.5.3 software. In many ways i prefer it to the dedicated Panasonic recorder I have.

The point is that it really doesn't take much steam power to record TV broadcasts. Your problem sounds more like a software bug.

Hmm, is 2.5.3 an old version? Because we have the newest and I think the company that bought eye tv wrecked the software. What macOS are you on?

Oh yes - much the same vintage as the Mac. That's running 10.6.8 (Snow Leopard) which I believe is the latest it will run. Sorry to hear about EyeTV - it has been an excellent product for me.

You have summed up exactly my own thoughts as to why the hyped up iPad is still a long way off from me considering it as my Mac replacement.
:)

Yup. And the bad part is that it is all in there already! It's just a regular UNIX file system under the covers. It looks just like macOS with one of the Mac apps that let you poke around in an iDevice. Just give us one sandboxed folder, "My Documents", and let us do whatever we want in there. We don't need to get to somewhere like /Applications. That's fine. I just don't get it.

No idea but we should know more next week, I would estimate it at around 2.75-3.2mm of added depth for keyboard folio with the protective leather back, but that’s just eyeballing it.

Tried the first generation surface, was never really a fan of the kickstand personally. 80% of my iPad usage is just holding the iPad, so don’t really use a Smart Cover only a sleeve to transport it.

Bought an apple keyboard sleeve for my 12.9 inch iPad Pro but never really took it out of the box, I love typing on a virtual keyboard, I just undock the keyboard and use it like an oversized Siemens sk65.
Loved that phone.

Some times I use the Smart Cover to type using the regular keyboard paradigm. But I do so rarely.

Different users have different needs, can’t wait to get mine next week.

Keep in mind that the kickstand also functions as a handle, which would help with the smaller bezels depending on how these new ipads will handle false touches. On my surface pro I can swing out my kickstand and hold the tablet in my hands with the kickstand resting on top of my hands, makes holding it up like that a ton more comfortable and stable. I even use it like this with the keyboard flipped down and resting on my chest for viewing while I'm in bed, which takes the entire weight of the tablet off my hands and lets me use it like that for hours.

BTW I used to use my ipad in your pictured configuration, but those foldable covers were only stiff for a few weeks and eventually became very soft and provided very little support unless you balanced them just right and didn't touch the tablet.

But having infinite angles is just amazing because you can switch the configuration based on need. I honestly believe that having the kickstand totally changes and massively enhances tablet use. But anyhow just my pov, enjoy your new ipad, they are absolutely stunning.
