What is the nicest 4k 27-32” monitor available at a reasonable price (under $700?) for the mini?
If you want 32", which I personally believe is the absolute best size for a 4K monitor, check out the Samsung 32" 4K UH850: https://www.amazon.com/Samsung-U32H850UMN-Desktop-3840X2160-Warranty/dp/B071Y6SWGT/

It's QLED (Quantom Dot), VA instead of IPS (no IPS glow or bleed with much better contrast), has integrated USB ports and has an excellent stand. Personally one of the best monitors I've ever owned.

Here comes the air
Has cook been gas bagging again?

The most expensive device ever seems to be the new trend.

No new iPad? Just overpriced pro and mini?

Is the ssd still soldered in the Mac mini? I noticed they took stock of complaints and they have put in sodims.

This event is so meh.

Love these events.:apple:

Apple’s marketing is pure genius.
I hate them now, cant bear to watch, they all s p e a k s o s l o w l y
And use the same adjectives over and over.
Devices getting more expensive with crap amounts of storage. Reminds me of Micro$oft.

Everything looks great. Shame I can't afford any of it, but that's more on me.

Also, guys, they've said all along that the new Mac Pro is a 2019 product. Spare the agonized disappointment for now.
Fortunately I could afford it, but these iPads are just so overpriced that I don’t want to. I’m usually first in line for iPhones, iPads, and MacBook Pro, but this is just completely unreasonable. $999 for a base 12.9 Ipad is just not acceptable. That’s with no LTE, no pencil, and no keyboard (a keyboard that is 200 bucks, and has no backlighting).

Regardless of who can afford it, no one should choose to. If enough people spoke up, you’d suddenly see apple drop $200+ off the prices overnight. It’s happened before (see the original iPhone price drop). Apple really went too far on the pricing this time.

I didn't say that. I said that the message delivered today is clear: Macs were released only because there are still MacOS users. But they want everybody moving to iOS. The enthusiasm was in the iPad Pro, not in the Macs. Apple really needs everybody on iOS for their current business model to succeed.

Worry when Johnny says an iPhone was designed entirely on an iPad.

I listened to bits and didn't hear his entire intro, but unless I missed Tim's pointing that out, pointing out what you mentioned instead of assuming the users/viewers would "get it" sure would have added some helpful context for full enjoyment. Or perhaps the intro was designed so that it would be truly fully useful in the future, instead of at the present moment, after people lingered and questioned and tapped/asked, or maybe stumbled upon that valuable nugget of information which finally added context to what was presented (possibly without any helpful context/cues)...

Yeah I dunno... I only know because I was a Lana fan early on before she broke out and also being an avid Apple fan, I was interested in the small details... like what computers she used and her editing software ahhaha. Not sure its common knowledge.

It’s coming in 2019 according to most of the rumors. That’s why they released the iMac Pro this year.

Yes. That's been the rumor. In fact, the rumor has been floating around for a couple years now.

"Upgrades soon!"

"New Mac Pros previewed at the New York event in October!"

What we have here is old fashioned vaporhardware.

2019 is SIX YEARS after the introduction of the last Mac Pro model.

An iMac Pro is NOT an easy sell to management as a viable pro level upgrade when the price tag is a few thousand dollars MORE than the last Mac Pro and comes in at around $7,200 configured for future work demands, etc.

Reality is that businesses buy based on fiscal year and budget allocations and business doesn't STOP to wait for Apple.

I've worked on a Mac since 1987.

I've worked on Apple's advertising.

I 've been an advocate, lead on multiple systems purchases for whole departments, etc.

It's getting harder and harder to justify the enthusiasm anymore.

RIP Steve. We miss you every day.

You mean the Steve Jobs who introduced the hockey puck mouse, and G4 Cube? He made mistakes, too.

Apple got burned by the cylindrical Mac Pro. They deliberately said they were taking their time and doing actual market research when designing the new “professional” Macs, which is a change for Apple. The iMac Pro was the first step and it satisfies a need for many people. The ability to string together the new Mac Mini is another step (shades of the old XServe).

Apple is going to start forcing people back to windows if they don't give us some mid range desktop power. iMac is horribly outdated. No way I'll pay full price for a nearly two year old iMac. iMac Pro is ridiculously expensive. Good machine, but outside of what I need. My 2012 iMac is getting long in the tooth, but I'll continue to wait for a refresh, or at least processor upgrade. I do light video editing, and need 3 big screens, so a Macbook Pro is out unless I want to spend a fortune. My 32 gb of ram is barely enough in my old iMac so I want 64gb for sure.

My god the constant whining here is absolutely unbearable... everything announced has been great but let's nitpick every single little thing to death so we can whine, whine, whine... Getting out of here!

Yeah I mean the mac mini is like SO many times faster than the old one, so we should be cheering and throwing money, right? /s

I find it incredible that Apple is BOASTING about letting the state of the mac slip so far into stagnation and obsolescence: "SENSATIONAL, BREAKING NEWS: BRAND NEW computer JUST released is leaps and bounds faster than an abandoned, thought-to-be-discontinued, 5-year-old computer!" Give me a break

Not sure where you are getting that from.
It is in the best interest of Apple to keep more than one "pillar", as long as all of them are still profitable.
Why get rid of something that makes alot of money?

I think they would actually loose money if they did that, because alot of people now buy an iPad and a Macbook, because they do different things. If you can do it all with the same device, there's no need to buy 2 devices.

Amen to that.

Bicycles have evolved for decades and avid, productive users will always have both a road & mountain bike. Someone on a forum somewhere without a true understanding of other's behavior, tasks, and preferences might suggest a cyclocross bike could meet both needs, but not even close. When switching between windows and typing and being productive across multiple monitors, an iPad would never ever replace working in OSX with a keyboard/mouse.

They made it grey.
Big..freaking..whoop.
Still un-upgradable, behind the current processors and unexpandable.
Slapping a new coat of paint on the same junk ain't innovation Timmy Kook.

Yeah I took a closer look, I was looking at the back of the folio and the keyboard. My guess is just the back of the folio adds 30-40%, which puts it virtually the same thickness as the SP6. It's just a shame that something as incredibly functional as the kickstand couldn't have been included, it really really makes using a tablet a completely different experience.

With that said the new pros are phenomenal, absolutely stunning. I'd certainly consider one, but I need a full OS. But as a consumption device it's 2nd to none with the battery life and bezel setup.View attachment 799480

No idea but we should know more next week, I would estimate it at around 2.75-3.2mm of added depth for keyboard folio with the protective leather back, but that’s just eyeballing it.

Tried the first generation surface, was never really a fan of the kickstand personally. 80% of my iPad usage is just holding the iPad, so don’t really use a Smart Cover only a sleeve to transport it.

Bought an apple keyboard sleeve for my 12.9 inch iPad Pro but never really took it out of the box, I love typing on a virtual keyboard, I just undock the keyboard and use it like an oversized Siemens sk65.
Loved that phone.

Some times I use the Smart Cover to type using the regular keyboard paradigm. But I do so rarely.

Different users have different needs, can’t wait to get mine next week.

Apple is doing market research huh?

Of course they are. They ALWAYS have. Mistakes? Yeah, I remember the dark days of Sculley. I understand mistakes Apple has made.

The HUGE difference now is that when Apple was doing market research before, they were DRIVING the market.

Apple was INNOVATING and things like the hockey puck and the G4 Cube were REVOLUTIONARY at the time.

There is a huge difference between INNOVATING in a market space and IMITATING what is already in a market space.

Apple used to DRIVE technology so those "mistakes" you mention are part of that process.

Risk vs reward.

If Apple was risk averse at it's inception, there would be NO Apple.

The computer existed when Apple created the first Macintosh.

The MP3 player existed when Apple created the first scroll wheel'd iPod.

The cell phone existed when Apple created the first iPhone.

The tablet existed when Apple created the first iPad.

The desktop PRO computer STILL exists and the Mac Pro I'm working on was delivered to me in December, 2012.

The trouble is that modern day Apple under Tim Cook cannot deliver anything innovative in a timely fashion except revamps.

Maybe they're trying really, really hard to deliver a levitating computer with a clear, foldable, 30" touch display complete with gestures.

I don't need those features.

I need a workstation capable of producing huge trade show graphics one minute and broadcast quality 4k video the next.
It has to be expandable and upgrade able and it has to have connectivity to both newer and legacy peripherals.

Apple used to have their fingers planted squarely on the pulse of their power user. The professionals who would drop tens of thousands on systems in a big shop or the freelancer who would drop everything they could afford in a system for their home office.

Steve made mistakes, but he understood ALL market spaces and how to fill niches within them.

He even created some of those niches because he had vision.

Today's Apple seems to be pretty myopic.

Why is the ssd not user replaceable. If something goes wrong after warranty you can’t pop it out? I wonder if a handy person could unsolder the old one and solder back in a new one. Curious what ifixit will say, or if they’ll carry parts.

I see your point and I agree. They're playing the "how far can we push" game, but on the other hand, can you blame them when it's working so well...

Have you tried the Files app? It’s extremely simple to use.

I've looked at it, but it is still app-centric. If I have a project...construction, let's say...I want pictures, Word documents, PDFs, spreadsheets, etc. all in the same folder for that project. And if I have multiple projects I want multiple folders. Then I just go in, poke on a file and the needed app (which could be something versatile like iOS Preview, which doesn't exist, either) could open the file and let me just look or do stuff. If I take a picture I want to SAVE AS... the picture in the folder for the project it pertains to. Same as you would do in macOS. Right now everything is just too clumsy. I don't keep much of anything, or use my iPads for much of anything, because I'm not allowed to organize anything. The exact spot in time when things started "going wrong" was when Save and Save As... started going away. It's unfortunate that humans are now so stupid that they can't figure out those two commands. :)

You have summed up exactly my own thoughts as to why the hyped up iPad is still a long way off from me considering it as my Mac replacement.
