Oh right... AAPL is a charity... I forgot.

You ever tried distributing an app?
You think Kaji distributes for free? Provides hosting, distribution, billing?
And you think you can get the exposure yourself?
Good lord... this is a GREAT deal for small developers.

I agree totally, and I think Apple ha done something absolutely amazing here. Yes, it won't be your free-immediately-for-everyoneetc., but WHAT AN OPPORTUNITY for small developers!! this is massive. Imagine it, youÄve got a small app doing somthing useful, you set a price point alright to many, and watch the profits stream in... the perfect marketplace, it'slike if Musicians could dirctly upload to iTunes Music Store without any other agents - good stuff gets attention, and people pay for it, because it brings thevalue, ease ofuse, and will have some level of quality control. I for one, am very grateful for this route, I don't want to jeopardize my iPhone with some wild application from the internet, packed with russian/chinese spyware, but a useful, stable and secure app.

Way to go, I am more than happy about this!

what would be the purpose of buying an iphone now, you dont get the apps til june (itll probably be july since apple confuses their months, i mean whats the difference between february and june?) then in june (again, probably july) the new iphone will more than likely be released.

um, because you get some value out of it in the meantime?
jeez.

What a great motto for a business. "If you don't like it, leave!"

No... it is a great motto for a person who is dissatisfied, to find a way to accommodate his needs.

It appears that Apple has found a way to satisfy a majority of developers (over 50%).

It seems unreasonable to expect Apple to satisfy every individual developer's needs.

The solution lies with the individual, not with Apple!

Hey, hey, what's with the moaning about June??? Let us develops have a chance to work with this, OK??

This is absolutely, freaking, fantastic!!!!!!

Double-bump that!
Fantastic roadmap! :apple: rocks. This is 500% better than anticipated (especially to stop the "no Exchange" whining crowd. bye bye Blackberries in 2009! :)

And those games will rock too!! :))

Wait... so in a few months, my iPod Touch could potentially be a VOIP device?

And a sanctioned one, at that?

SOLD!

... at least, until the iPhone is released in Canada.

Oh no no no no no... you CAN'T!
Don't you see? You'll occasionally have to pay 10 or 20 bucks to get hundreds of dollars worth of new functionality, and Apple is playing you for a sucker!!!
You must insist that your touch be updated forever for FREE!!!

News Flash!

SDK means Software Developer Kit. A beta version is available for programmers today (notwithstanding stampede of developers overloading site). Over the next 4 months, Apple will make modifications to the SDK as needed to satisfy the desires of developers. After which, Apple will use its incredible resource of artists, programmers, marketing and IT personnel to distribute available applications in a virtual iTunes-on-iPhone console. This is great news!

So why are consumers complaining? Perhaps because they think SDK is something they can run on their iPhone. Maybe they erroneously assumed great applications would require no development time.

What Apple has done is nothing short of amazing. Producing Xcode for iPhone requires a tremendous amount of time. Policing malware, tracking digital signatures, and offering updates is time consuming. Maintaining the App Store will employ the services of very talented people (that get paid salaries). Since Apple is a for-profit company, it must cover these costs.

If the net result is a percentage of the fee developers are free to establish, what's the problem? Professional applications apps cost money.

Enjoy your music for just a little while longer and when everything is ready, shop till you drop!

Hi...

Ok everyone, please stop downloading the SDK. I can't even log in! :)

I wanna play too, is it my turn yet?

Brown on Thursdays

Does every one at Apple wear Brown on Thursdays, or did I log into a UPS convention?

Wonderfull now they aka Apple posted the download link on their mainpage...
and let me guess they forgot to upgrade the available bandwith for the development server ...

Heh, what really amuses me is the number of people downloading the SDK it takes to bring ADC to its knees. Now, how many of those who downloaded the 2.1GB actually know how to program? 1%? Less? :D:D

IS IT POSSIBLE TO VIEW TODAY'S EVENT like a video? well Apple post it? or not???

Yeah, I can't just connect to ADC ...
I wonder how many people are downloading the SDK now

Maybe Apple should have just pushed this out as an XCode update through Software update.

Only if you're an idiot.

I agree. There will be a tiny underground market for jailbroken apps, but almost all users will go through the App Store. It is a good set up for both users and developers alike, and thus will attract most of the attention.

No one's gotten 'screwed', but a LOT of people have exposed themselves as ignorant.

Ignorant of what? SOX? LOL. So you're saying Apple is the only ones following the rules and charging for updates that were not there originally? I don't pay for firmware upgrades on any other device I own (many of which add new functionality) so why is it forced on the touch? Some account at Apple read the rule and figured out they could charge for updates and at the same time blame it on SOX. If Apple wants to charge for touch updates, fine. Just quit lying about it and say it's a profit thing.

finally got it downloading...wow 2.1 GB if any one is interested

Man I am so giddy over this. at school we have been R&D'ing on how to build a specific type of media app, and for what it is, the iPhone will be an awesome environment for implementing it (we hope). I'm very intersted t be able to better look into what parts of quicktime are implemented and what are not, etc...

Edit: WTF Apple stock is stil going down today... do folks on wall street know anything ?

One thing missing (that I'm sure will develop very soon) is a rating system for use by people who have previously downloaded the software, combined with a filtering system. (Show me only 5-star apps).

Really? So you've never paid for a commercial operating system upgrade (i.e. OS X, Windows)?

The way I see it, and the way I think Apple sees it, the software on the Touch is closer to a computer OS than these other mobile device OS's. If you disagree, do you think that any of these other devices has the power that was just demonstrated today? If not, I don't think the development to get there would be quick or easy. Thus, would cost $$.

great news. 5 years of learning objective c/cocoa with a very limited job opportunities now seems to have paid off.

Just got to finnish a couple of web based projects and im back in cocoa/obj c heaven.

VERY VERY PLEASED!!!!!!!!!! :)

I just want to echo Arn's statement that ePocrates support is HUGE for physicians.

ePocrates is absolutely amazing in theory. Having current information on medications available at the point of contact (medical-speak for "while you are seeing the patient" or "while you are on rounds") is very, very helpful for patient care.

I upgraded to a Treo years ago specifically to get ePocrates functionality on my phone. Unfortunately, Mac support was abysmal and it was a royal PITA to get my Treo to stay updated with ePocrates (along with an abysmal experience keeping my contacts, calendars, etc. correctly synced with my Mac).

I moved to the iPhone specifically to eliminate the contact and calendar sync issues. The vastly improved email sync with my Macs was an added bonus that turned out to be more important than the other reasons I switched. To be honest, the iPhone in its current itineration proved more life-changing because of email than anything else. I actually started paying attention to email and responding to it, but that's a story for another thread....

ePocrates support for Mac users has always been a major pain. Auto-updates wouldn't work and the installation on a Palm device was frequently buggy.

I am amazed that they had an ePocrates representative speak at this event. Equally amazed at the glowing feedback on the iPhone SDK by this developer (as well as all the others).

I don't care at all that it will be June (July) before a commercial version of ePocrates is available to me. Having this app on my iPhone will dramatically improve the care I can provide to my patients. The comments that the ePocrates devs found the platform more robust than they expected is gravy. I can't tell you how huge this is for physicians.

Up-to-date drug databases. Drug-drug interaction databases. Medical formulas/calculations. Cancer staging information. Infectious disease databases. This is really, really big. And those are only the applications available to current mobile platforms. The comments concerning the robustness of the iPhone platform make me hope that this version of the software will offer even more utility.

I am stunned and psyched. The iPhone release of ePocrates will (hopefully) allow me to take better care of sick individuals. Thank you Apple and thanks to the ePocrates team.

Whine and complain all you want about various minor points ("oh noes, I will have to pay a small amount for vastly increased functionality") or the "horror" of the 4 month delay until apps are available. For me, personally, as well as to many physicians out there, this is quite literally groundbreaking and will positively impact on the lives of real people.

Wait. So adding a Stocks, Email, Maps, Notes, and Weather widgets are the equivalent to paying for Leopard or Vista? Please... This is firmware update, nothing more. Also, what kind of "power" are you talking about? Its a portable media player. Either way, I don't care what kind of "power" the iPod touch has in comparison to other mobile devices, those devices aren't charging $20 a pop for their firmware updates.

Yes, we all know how much "time" it takes or whatever you guys are saying for these updates to be worth $20, but it doesn't change the fact that other companies have been giving free FIRMWARE updates for ever. For example, the original Zune got a complete overhaul in interface and some new features for free. Sony added Skype to its PSP. The Xbox/PS3/Wii get new features added all the time. What is the difference?

Maybe Im not understanding something, but I looked on Google for why they supposedly have to charge for these updates and found nothing. And why can Sony or Microsoft give these updates for free, but Apple feel the need to CHARGE us... twice??? Why :apple:... Why???
