Why can't IMAP be used? Is it insecure? I've always wondered why companies don't just use IMAP and WebDAV for their corporate mail and calendars.
IMAP requires additional ports opened up on the exchange server. Many admins hate doing that for what ends up being email only.

Whether or not jailbreaking continues depends on how apps are distributed. That information is yet to come.

I'm going to ask the question going through all of your heads: When? When will all of this be available? They JUST released 1.1.4.

(Don't bite my head off for asking "when". Haha, someone had to say it.)

My guess is later today. The exchange support was announced as "now" so it'll probably become available later today.

Well, it looks like Apple has really put some effort into this SDK. I still can't believe they licensed ActiveSync. What's Paul Thurrott going to bitch about now?

Compared to Microsoft's cumbersome Windows Mobile simulator, the new iPhone simulator looks to be very polished.

Looks like you will be able to build apps and test them on not just the simulator but also your own iphone hardware !

unless I'm wrong, this means even if Apple plays gatekeeper for all iPhone apps (I'm not saying that's a bad thing) you could atleast get the source for a favorite open source app, build the app and put it on your phone.

that's like best of both worlds, average users are somewhat protected, since they would likely not know or bother with the dev tools, and power users can still have their own apps...very cool (unless I misunderstood what they were saying)

Jailbreaking is still going to be very important. I am pretty sure apple is not going to allow us to create and use our own themes for our phones. Many programs we have with installer will not make it over to the iTunes store for us. And if programs cost money for something like iChat the free alternatives Apollo and Mobile Chat will still be getting used and updated by people.

Engadget just posted pictures of the Touch Fighter game. I'm going to have to echo the audience reaction.

<neo>Whoa</neo>

I wonder if the SDK will include a library for modifying the iTunes library on the iPhone...

Gizmodo has the best update site of the event. Pics of games that steer with the accelerometer! :)

If reality is like what we see here (and Apple's pretty good about that), then this is going to be a dream to program for.

I've programmed for PalmOS using the old POSE, and this is lightyears ahead.

Can't wait. This is a GOOD day :D
