Logic badly needs a mixer update, but will download and try in a bit. Genuinely curious to see what improvements have been made.

Truth be told I primarily use Cubase now, and it's been really, really good for my needs. I regret not switching sooner honestly. At the same time, I do genuinely think that Logic Pro is, by far, the best deal in music production today.
Same. Cubase pro is insanely feature rich. And I am so fast on it as I now know it inside out. But. This new Logic update really does have me torn now. And what with the huge set of apple loops they are constantly updating too it’s like having a free splice subscription. I may have to dive back into logic. But I hate switching work flows. Torn

ooo apparently it might!

  • Fixes an issue where automation of plug-in parameters in projects with a high sample rates could cause clicks, pops or other audio anomalies.

totally unrelated unfortunately. The "anomalies" occur not only in the DAW but already in Finder etc. It has nothing to do with Logics automation.

What this fixes is when you had a sudden level jump of a parameter, it would cause a loud pop sound. No matter what Mac you're running on.

I am still waiting with the update because Sampler replaces EXS24. It disappears from the list. So backwards compatibility is compromised already which might be an issue for some.

This kind of stuff can break your perfectly running setup sometimes. I have about 200GB of my own EXS libraries which I don't wanna lose. A GUI update would have been sufficient for me.

That's a pain - i was getting crackling just recording a single track at 44Khz with no plugins. I did notice that by default, catalina's midi utility was set at 48khz. it improved somewhere after making sure the sample rate was the same in both places, but i could still here some level of distortion.

once distortion occured, it would happen in itunes as well, until i closed logic, then it went away.

Fantastic news, can't wait to update.

This has to be one of Apple's best value products by far, particularly when compared to Pro Tools or Ableton.

But I'd best not jinx it... :D

I agree. Looks like most of the updates are geared less towards those who can play actual instruments live but more those who ”paint” music, so it’s very good for them.

That can't be right. I don't have the update yet - but will check when it arrives. EXS24 has been a backbone for many years - unless Sampler completely subsumes it and seamlessly gives the same results?

Ugh I'm still salty over that. I adored Aperture and loved it far better than Lightroom at the time.

I'm not.

A dozen years ago I extensively evaluated both Aperture and Lightroom. After using both for a period of time, it was clear to me Lightroom was a far better image processing system, especially for handling local edits (brush, gradient, etc) non-destructively.

Also, with Adobe's background and core business being image processing, I felt Adobe would be in the image processing business for the long haul. And was uncertain about Apple, knowing that was not a key business. At that time I had around 100k image files. Today, far more.

Turns out that going with Lightroom was a good decision. With the number of edited image files I have today, switching to any other system would be nearly impossible.

I have yet to update from Logic Express 9 on my 2014 MBA. Are you saying projects using EXS24’s won’t be instantly usable when opened with the current version of Logic Pro X, for now?

I looked at the release notes and it says, "Supports all existing EXS24 instrument".

So in theory we should be fine.
Probably worth waiting to see what others find before making the move if you're less confident, though.

Installed, and opened one of my projects that uses EXS24 instruments. It's automatically substituted Sampler, and all seems to play fine (caveat: sample of 1 - no pun intended).

Hold up. What are those headphones in the second promo pic?

EDIT. nm looks like they're just the ancient Beats Pro headphones from 2013 that are still being sold at an outrageously high price for some reason.

Sampler replaces EXS24 but all your projects will open fine. Everything will be loaded up in Sampler instead of EXS24 though.

But I am pretty sure if you write a song using Sampler and then open it on an older system which for some reason can not use Logic 10.5 (also tied to OS) it will probably not work since the plugin doesn't exist. I can still open my newer arrangements on a much older system and get sound of it. Thats why I wrote backwards compatibility.

Great to see what looks like a major update to a pro application.

I wish Apple wasn't so schizophrenic on the pro-side of things.

I just don't understand what Apple is actually trying to do in "Pro". They went from not releasing a professional workstation in 6 years to releasing a monster that doesn't make sense for many levels of professionals... even though many of their highest-end professionals left the platform when they couldn't get their act together on hardware for years on end.

Then I look at other applications that I use, like Motion, and its barely been updated in a decade -- I'd be willing to pay more for a more useful application, After Effects has kept getting more advanced while it seems like Apple is letting Motion wither and die. And as others have already mentioned about Aperture. I'm hoping such a big update to Logic Pro suggests maybe they've reinvested in FCPX/Motion as well.

Its hard to invest in a "pro" platform when you can't tell from one day to the next if the vendor is actually committed to it

Thank you. I‘ll watch out. I’m more concerned about compatibility with all these 64-bit app upgrades to any ARM processor moves Apple might make. Already I’m looking at $hundreds of app/software upgrades from 32-bit on my 2014 MBA if/when I upgrade to a 64-bit mac. I‘d highly expect any software from Apple purchased for 64-bit machines to either work on tbd ARM macs or receive free upgrades to ARM-compatible apps.

Let’s enjoy it while it lasts and hopes it lasts. My guess is Tim is doing more house walk-arounds looking for dormant money-making opps to support income growth to meet shareholder expectations. Showing growth over bigger and bigger piles of money isn’t easy.

I just think Logic and Garageband are bigger reasons to buy a Mac / iOS device. So naturally there has been more investment. The fact that you get Logic for so little compared to its competition gives you an idea of how important that piece of software is to selling Mac computers (and by extension, iPhones/iPads).

I believe all EXS24 patches (even User) will work in Sampler
