I just think Logic and Garageband are bigger reasons to buy a Mac / iOS device. So naturally there has been more investment. The fact that you get Logic for so little compared to its competition gives you an idea of how important that piece of software is to selling Mac computers (and by extension, iPhones/iPads).

mac os is is my preferred os but i could live with something else if i had to

it’s logic that keeps me tied in

Pretty excited for this. I love logic, but this looping feature is just what I was looking for in other DAWs. It pays to wait, if it's a good idea most DAWs will have that feature eventually. I'm always tempted to go to another DAW and Windows... but Logic is just too good. And cheap! I'm another that bought Logic Pro X right when it came out.

Whenever a new feature comes to Logic the UI and features are usually well thought it. Somehow they figure out a way to be easy to use (or at least look at) while still having a ton of advanced functions.

Just looking at the step sequencer functions, so many options... makes the old hyper editor/step editor look like garbage. Well that always looked like garbage.

I'm surprised the Mac version hasn't been left to wither and die while the focus on an iPad version. They seem content to use the iPad as an accessory to a Mac, instead of it's own thing. Or at maybe they see GarageBand as the iPad's Logic, and it's all one and the same development cycle.

It's good that they finally updated the sampling, EXS24 was such a core part of Logic it's good that it gets an update. (I bet it's still EXS24 under the hood, many of the new features have been just reskinned EXS24)

BAD NEWS: Found the first feature they completely removed which I was using all the time. It adjusts the velocity range of your instrument. I can not find it in the controls of Sampler (even not under "details").

GOOD NEWS: I created an arrangement in Logic 10.5 using Sampler and opened it on a different machine with Logic 10.4.8 and it automatically opens EXS24 and plays correctly! So this is very good news and very smart of Apple! My assumptions were wrong.

Ableton and Bitwig had this since their initial releases

Great update! I love Logic but also Ableton Live because of the loops. Usually I first collect ideas in Ableton and then move to Logic. Will try to do more in Logic now. Still will miss the Push controller there. :( On the other hand Ableton has been sleeping in recent years. Waiting for MPE support for sooo long now.

That was a bit of a tongue-in-cheek riff on Apple's history of making similar claims about other things to which your comment would equally apply.

I mean, sure, but as pointed out, a different Apple product already had this feature (though I don't know if Ableton did even before GarageBand for iPad).

I also thought the Redmond, start your photocopiers thing was a bit much. Apple was indeed in a position to tease Microsoft: Apple was way smaller yet rapidly evolved OS X with Puma and Jaguar and Panther and Tiger; meanwhile, Microsoft was stuck with various editions of XP. Vista was essentially their Copland, and they had to "reset" its development to get anything out at all, years later, and with many things scrapped. But nonetheless, Vista had some good stuff in it that OS X didn't (two random things that come to mind: its entire graphics stack could independently 'reboot' without the kernel panicking, and speaking of audio software, you had a per-application audio mixer, a bit like SoundSource). It was just way too ambitious and borne out of hubris. It did also do various things OS X had introduced, such as adding a compositor to the UI, or having UAC (a bit like OS X's authorization dialogs), but if Bertrand Serlet wanted to make a clever, warranted dig at Microsoft, it's that great artists ship, and for more than half a decade, Microsoft could not.

It's great they're making Logic better!

Indeed.

Wow. This update looks amazing. There's so many bug fixes in the release notes that have been problematic for four, five years now.

Sheesh ... another person suing Apple! :)

I can't wait to dive into this update. I have a LOT of relearning to do. I'm really excited about the new sampler!

LOL Thanks for pointing this out - I corrected it to "course"
Although I am an attorney, I am not suing Apple over this LPX update lol

That’s the longest patch notes I’ve ever read. o_O
Longtime Lightwave users have seen free updates like this. Other than that ... maybe if you combined all the Daggerfall patches from Bethesda?

ok people, at least READ the notes where they say they solved (or at least think they solved) you pet issue before coming here and complaining that they didn't solve it.

It’s an incredible update. I doubt I’ll ever use the live looping thing. If you work in film or tv, Logic is a must.

I primarily do live studio tracking and editing. Would love an easier way to nudge transients w/ flex time in sessions with varying tempos. It's amazing what it can do, but with audio files tied to the project tempos it can become a real mess. I'm sure I could stand to dig into to it more (edumakate myself) but improvements in this area would be welcome!

Logic badly needs a mixer update, but will download and try in a bit. Genuinely curious to see what improvements have been made.

Truth be told I primarily use Cubase now, and it's been really, really good for my needs. I regret not switching sooner honestly. At the same time, I do genuinely think that Logic Pro is, by far, the best deal in music production today.

I agree. Looking at the release notes (after you get past all the sampling/sequencing/drum machiney stuff) looks like lot of new handy features and stability improvements for audio editing. Looking forward to getting my head around it. https://support.apple.com/en-us/HT203718

Good news! I share projects and collaborate with people with various versions of Logic. While I am updated on new Mac, not all of them are and up to now going between older versions and newer version of Logic has been seamless. Hoping it will continue. The only thing that hasn't been there are the new Horn and String instruments because well they are not in the older version...Easy workarounds though.

I am still waiting with the update because Sampler replaces EXS24. It disappears from the list. So backwards compatibility is compromised already which might be an issue for some.

This kind of stuff can break your perfectly running setup sometimes. I have about 200GB of my own EXS libraries which I don't wanna lose. A GUI update would have been sufficient for me.
Don't know how you arrived to that conclusion. But the press release says that Sampler is fully compatible with EXS24. I'm guessing its a reskin rather than a complete rewrite.

Very sweet, Logic Pro is an amazing deal with all these updates!

@All the Aperture comments: Capture One Pro really delivers, even if the interface is not as nice.

What an amazing update and it brings Logic much closer to what I love about Ableton. By far my favourite Apple product.
Yep, much more like Ableton... and this is why I sighed when I realised I paid the £359 for the 9 Standard to 10 Suite two weeks ago

Such is the world of DAW Software!
Then again, if someone wants to collaborate, ever, in the future... At least I now have cross-DAW support:
Ableton Live 10 Suite
Pro Tools 12
Logic Pro X
Cubase Pro 10.5

🤣🤣🤣
