Logic has so many things that I'd like to play with... but I don't have $200 to waste on it.

I wish Apple would find a way to make it free just like Garage Band is (the distinction shouldn't be based on how much money you want to spend, but based on how complicated you want the UI to be.) It doesn't cost Apple more to give it to more people (since it's just downloable software)... and I can't imagine it really makes a noteworthy amount of money just from the $200/seat that they sell it for.

You wouldn't be wasting your money, Logic Pro X offers great value for money. The Alchemy plug-in on it's own cost more than Logic does now when it was first released in 2009.

I don't understand the negative comments on this one? I've tinkered around with music software on computers for at least 15-20 years now and I think you'd be hard pressed to find a better value than what you get for $200 with Logic Pro X.

(In fact, I assume Apple makes it such a good value largely to guarantee Macs retain their position as the "preferred" machine of musicians and recording folks. There's a lot of pressure to go with a Windows platform for this kind of work, especially when some of the software out there has no Mac version. In the past, you saw this with programs like ACID Pro and FruityLoops, for loop-based music-making. All the Mac really had to counter it was Apple's "Soundtrack" software, which was primarily sold only as part of the Final Cut Studio bundle and eventually phased out. More recently, it's seen especially with the useful but more obscure freeware or shareware packages people put out to work with specific music synthesizers/workstations or other gear. They'll often write them using something like Visual BASIC in Windows and have no clue how to port to the Mac.)

At the same time though, the Mac has always had ProTools in its camp for hard disk recording. (Arguably NOT the best choice these days, but has a strong following of experts familiar with using it who'd rather not learn something new.) And with many of the other "name brand" packages like Reason available for either PC or Mac, Logic helps push it over the edge as the better choice, especially with the overall ease of setup. (No hassling with installing various versions of "low latency" drivers and carefully configuring Windows startups so you don't run into issues.)

Heads up. Im running the latest El Capitan public beta and since updating Logic it crashes on startup, so it cannot be used. Im exploring the issue, so not sure if its localized is for me or something that will affect other users. Luckily i did it only on my test system.

So be careful if you happen to be in the middle of a project and are using the beta.

Count your days very carefully fellow pros! Your days are limited after the death of Aperture...

I find your argument pretty invalid. It has nothing to do with how complicated a UI is, it's how in-depth it is. It's like giving a graphic designer Microsoft Paint and saying,"go design something with this!" Sure it could be done, but Photoshop and Illustrator offer WAY more flexibility than Microsoft Paint. It's the same thing here. Garageband is great and all but it's pretty limited compared to what Logic Pro X can do. I know...I've ben working with Logic Pro for 10 years now. And your argument about it costing way too much, you clearly have not done your research that other DAWs like Pro Tools, Digital Performer, Cubase, Ableton Live, and others are extremely pricing in comparison to Logic Pro X, especially for what you're getting. So to say "$200 is a waste" then you probably shouldn't be in the music business, dear sir.

Thanks. I did try that and also removing preferences. Its a bit more hardcore than that, crashes thread 0 immediately, doesn't even get a chance to scan plugins.

Edit- Alchemy is all over the crashed thread in the crash report, heh

Remember... always remember... wait for every one else to download the latest OS and hit the wall with it, ther are always problems. Specially with Pro Aps.

Never upgrade your OS if you have a production build working fine.. why screw things up ...

anyone know where the bullet list of ALL the changes is located ? I'm hoping there are hundreds (often the case)

Is mainstage 3 something that would interest up you at $30.
Seems like it's positioned between garage-band and logic pro, but I don't really know - could really figure that out from the article.

Seems like a great deal but personally I don't see the need for Logic in my workflow. I'm just glad to see that Apple is actually showing some attention to their Pro apps.

Now if only FCPX saw a big feature update like this.

You do realize that the pitiful amount of money Apple gets from Logic, is the main justification for keeping the Logic developers on the Apple payroll?
