Written by a friend but must say I think this covers it all fairly well

"‎333 deaths in police cells since 1998 - and not a single police conviction - you have to ask who the IPCC actually works for, targeted and daily stop and search in specific areas if you're black or Asian, in Haringey unemployment is double the rest of the country, wealth and poverty has never been so stark. I'm not condoning any of last night's violence but these facts do help understand where the anger comes from"

Report is here http://www.ipcc.gov.uk/en/Pages/deathscustodystudy.aspx

Also there is a disconnect in UK society between those currently in government (and not saying Labour would be any better) when almost your entire cabinet are career politicians having studied PPE at Oxford or Cambridge and have no career outside politics and no real world work experience outside the Westminster Village you do have to question how they can reflect and reason with the disaffected youth.

I'm Arabic and pretty certain I fall into that criteria of people who are stopped and searched. I've lived in seven different boroughs in London and I've never been stopped. Maybe its because I don't try to conceal my face with a hoodie when the suns out, maybe I just don't fit the police's stereotyping profile of a troublemaker (not that profiling is fair), but I can't stand it when people try to play the victim like that. I'm not the police's biggest fan but I'd love to see these apparently racist officers because the officers I've spoken to have been normal human beings, not racist thugs.

I totally agree about the unemployment issues, especially in Tottenham and Croydon, but this just isn't the way to go about solving things and I have no sympathy for the people who do this. I actually know one guy who was out last night in Croydon - don't know what he actually did, he could have just been spectating - and he's always moaning about how he gets dirty looks from officers (and has been searched a few times) and then he goes out and does this? **** the police, as he'd say. Just bring in the army, I have no sympathy for these morons.

Thought you got rid of GUNS so the GOV can protect you?
Oh wait that isn't working is it!

orly?? Cause The UK has a gun crime problem like the US?

Whats your solution? arm the police and shoot the rioters??

A Police officer is only allowed to use a gun as a last resort, even Riot police in the US have to deal with crowds the old fashioned way, even though they are armed.

I'm surprised at Bristol though. I've only been there a few times in my life but it generally seems a cosy, nice place.

It's full of travellers, 'crusties', squatters and counter-culture types. I'm surprised there hasn't been more trouble there over the last few days.

But still I'm surprised at the police. Instead of protecting one a shop owned by one of the richest companies in the world, why not protect the smaller shops that cant afford to be destroyed?
As I said before... suspicious! And not very cool at all.

Or they could just be parking their vans at a fantastic vantage point that gives them access to the whole of Oxford street (they're right in the middle of it) and at the top of Regent Street.

The Apple store is less than 100m from Oxford Circus itself, and probably the best place to park (Regent St is quieter than Oxford St and there's space to pass there). Where else should the police be if they're to respond to rumoured violence at Oxford circus?

Do prey-tell, what are 'crusties'?

Mixed in with that lot is a very good university (and one not very good one) with matching well-to-do alumni.

Riots

I thought this incident would subside, but I seem to be wrong now.
Most of these people are not actually rioting, they just have another stupid excuse to loot and have a rampage.
They are doing no justice to the fallen victim.

Birmingham isn't in the north.
There were no riots in Manchester. I heard rumours last night but the GM Police announced this morning they were just that. Some people said there were gangs of Indian/Pakistani youths gathering in town centres but it looks like nothing came of that.
Leeds had some troubles but they were under control pretty quickly.
Liverpool went pretty quiet too.

Regent Street itself is the jackpot for these guys. That and Camden (about an hour away to the north by foot) is being looted so its probably only a matter of time before Regent Street and Oxford Street are affected, and then imagine the scale of the damage? Imagine the news reports complaining about how the police didn't defend all the shops? I totally agree with you saying that they should protect the smaller shops that can't afford to be destroyed but I guess reputation plays a part. Some high-ranking person has probably thought "If Apple or John Lewis etc get their stores trashed they won't come back to London".

Who gives a crap what happens to the Apple store when police are having to deal with missiles and petrol bombs being chucked at them. Screw the damn Apple store.

YOU'RE RIGHT MAN! LETS HEAD DOWN THERE AND SMASH THE ********** UP!

...oh.
:p

I'm seriously considering becoming a volunteer with the Met. 16 hours a month and you get free transport 24/7. Hmm. Also you get to run after bad guys. Actually the running bit would be annoying, and I'd hate to scuff my shins while in pursuit. Maybe I could be a mounted police officer, on a horsey. Or I could have a police doggy. Hmmm..

Or an officer that sits behind a computer, updating the Public on the Status of Apples stores....... cause if one of those were damaged, then that would be a tragedy! And God forbid, society low lifes getting thier hands on Apple products...

A Statement from Bullring:

9.30am, 9th August: Following yesterday evening’s events Bullring will be opening at 10am this morning with a small amount of shops remaining closed during the day. These include JD Sports, Footlocker, New Look, Sports Direct, Thomas Sabo, Moor Street News, Jamie’s Italian and Savers.

As always our primary concern is the safety, welfare and comfort of our customers and retailers and we are working closely with the police to ensure we take the appropriate measures as and when required.

Bond Street?

"Meet my new friends...Patek Philippe and Jaeger Lecoultre..."

Actually these yoots are more into G-shock....pfft!

Pathetic? I apologise for hating on a culture that believes it is superior in every way to people living north of them.

Have you ever heard of a thing called the north/south divide? Its especially prominent in the media.

I'm from North London but currently reside in North Lincolnshire.

Both areas are crap, both have scummy people, both have arrogant people. Get over it. Neither are better by a long shot.

Personally, I hate this country....its turned into a s-hole full of immigrants and chavs who scrounge off those of us that work damn hard to keep food on the table.

I'd quite happily move to a nice secluded island off Scotland somewhere....nice bit of piece and quite away from the snobby and chavvy (read council house) scroungers.

Theres a simple solution. National Service. Cheap and highly effective.

Regent Street itself is the jackpot for these guys. .

This is true, but I reckon it's easier to police these areas. The student riots were huge numbers of many '000s, whereas these 'protests' are smaller numbers and would be easier to block off and suppress in more built-up areas.

Unless they set everything on fire. Then run away. ... oh ...

No more racial prejudices in this thread. I've cleaned up what I found and its insensitive to joke about someone's teeth or weight (or any other physical attribute).

Keep this thread on topic

I could envisage Apple Store employee's willfully throwing themselves at the rioters while their colleagues moved forward and used their bodies as shields.

After all, it's a small sacrifice for a what is... quite magical.

A lot of chav shops in that list....

Hey...Savers provides me with toilet roll, kitchen roll, shampoo, shower gel, Heinz beans, brown pasta, sun dried tomato's and John Smiths tuna.

Thinking about it, it's probably the first shop I'd raid...if I were a rioter. Which I'm not.

I'm just imagining the employees picking up the iMacs, aiming them at the rioters and then firing huge rainbow beams. Yeah.

I'm originally from the North West and have lived in London for 20 years.

There's no 'culture that believes it is superior in every way to people living north of them', at least not in my experience.

This chip-on-the shoulder attitude is tiresome and completely unjustified. If you don't like people in the South, just be honest and say that - don't try and justify bigotry by projecting blame onto other people.

Haha. I get most of my toiletries from pound land/buster. But it should be easy to catch the rioters. Look for any kids in new trainers and hoodies
