Murder is life sentence here in the UK. And sorry, but I consider permanent isolation to be of greater punishment than death (of the intruder), which is of course the easy way out.
And the poster below did have a valid point. Tighter gun controls does equal less guns, which does equal less gun crime. People like to have a gun for power. Trust me, less people would kill if access to firearms was severely constricted, but unfortunately states in the US seem to be moving in the opposite direction.
Take these riots, for example, mindless idiots who were brought up on state welfare seem to have gotten upset and seized the moment to exploit peaceful protests. Burglary and damage to property is very high, but mindless killing is non-existent. I suspect if guns were as widely available here as in the US, the situation would be different. So far, I haven't read about these idiots breaking into individual homes, but I think they would if they owned guns.
Typical Appelonians. They are worried about the stupid Apple store and could care less about the people in the city. Quite selfish and arrogant.
Very few where it actually matters. Where are all those jobs going that Apple's creating? To Guangdong. Where you get beaten if you say a bad word about your boss or your working conditions, and you get "reeducated" or sent to the loony bin if you complain to the authorities. (And let's be honest, how many people are going to be hired at the North Carolina data center? A few dozen? A couple hundred? Drops in the bucket compared to a half million at Foxconn. And certainly not enough to help fix unemployment in the US and the western world)
Me, I stand neutral. I sense this being a long time coming. Honestly, I'd love to see the Regent Street Apple Store hit, not so much because I have anything against the store, or the company (though the fact that Apple's batteries are utter bollocks is a travesty beyond belief...it's not really a cause to intentionally light stuff on fire), or the people who work there (it would really suck, seriously)...so much that I would love to see all you fanboys panic and snivel and have your knickers in a twist from the fact that the poor, "undeserving" masses got the gadgets you want. Your response to this is disgusting, since most of you seem more concerned about the looting of a single irrelevant store (in the grand scheme of things) than the businesses in Tottenham, Enfield, and other neighbourhoods. Or even just the general cause for rage to begin with. Shame on your lot.

London has become a bit of an extreme tho. The centre is beautiful and a global gem, however a large chunk of the rest of the city is a cesspit where a generation of people who can't take responsibility for their actions have bred. We need the army in there with tear gas, plastic bullets and water cannons.

But seriously, it's very sad and the utterly abhorrent behavior of these looters is just mind blowing. How they can justify such violence and disregard for other humans simply because they fancy a new bit of carpet for the hall, and tv for the bedroom, and so destroy businesses and homes of others. This is not about poor people rioting for human rights, for food and shelter, this is about scumbags rioting and looting for the sheer hell of it.

I've looked at live footage of the riots, vast majority of those people did not look European.

I guess this is the sign of the times with governments going to war needlessly and getting deeper and deeper into debt, and the less fortunate in the world getting more hungrier while most of us here are obsessed with whats happening in Cupertino with little regard for the important things in respect of humanity and our planet. Its all about the self rather than unity.
Unrest - power to the people - these are signs that the majority of people in the world have had enough of the ******** ex Pennsylvania Avenue and Downing Street, and the other centers where power is corruption. They are only getting their just deserve.

Not surprised this has happened. Parts of England have deteriorated badly, even over the last 20 years or so. Youths like these are not confined to just london. Go to most major cities in england and its full of chavs who have never worked a day in their life and make life hell for everyone else. They have no respect and are just a cancer on society.
We are too soft in this country. Have been for years. Community service, Juvenile Detention are a joke and they are back out committing the same crimes over and over again. So no im not surprised things have turned out this way. Something like this has been coming now for a long time.

Sounds like a pretty damned good plan to me. If these bastards want to riot just for the sake of breaking and stealing stuff, they can do it in their own damned neighbourhood.

But it's not people standing up to governments - there are no placcards or calls for anything to be changed. It was triggered by police shooting dead a gangster who may have opened fire on them first, but it's not about that any more. It's just violence and looting.

Rioting has spread across the country with Manchester, Liverpool and Birmingham seeing activity last night.
All this is is giving lazy scum who spend their nights harrassing people in the streets a purpose to be lazy scum and spend their nights harrassing people in the streets....and hopefully rob some shops without the police coming.
London is massively diverse and all cultures are represented.
