I find it rather disturbing that the story on the front page is concerned for the Apple stores!! And I'm sure the police are only parked there for a strategic position, don't think the friggin Apple store comes into it!

What about the furniture shop that was burnt to the ground and all the other businesses ruined? Oh but who cares, as long as a couple of stores of a multi national multi billion dollar company are fine!

As for the riots, meh it's just modern life. A bunch of thugs that join in for fun and all they can get, the majority of them will never be prosecuted. If I was in charge I'd have the army on the streets!

That's what it's like these days, a peaceful protest turns into a mass riot because it was all planned by some thugs before hand.
Both the police and all the British intelligence agencies appear totally incapable of preventing or stopping these riots.

All this is going on and all you care about is the crappy apple store? jeez people need a wake up call, seriously..... How very materialistic people can be, it's rather depressing.

I hate my scummy country sometimes (oftentimes).

And as Apolloa says, it's just a strategic position. The walking abortions have robbed JD Sports blind, now onto the laptops.

Sky News saying the looters in Peckham have got off with half price cracked ice and miles and miles of carpet tiles, T.V.s, deep freeze and David Bowie L.P.s, ball games, gold chains, whatsnames, pictures frames and leather goods, and Trevor Francis track suits.

This is all making the UK look really really bad.
We have nothing to riot about tbh, most of the rioters are just looting and joining in for fun.
When asked why they're rioting they say they aren't getting enough back from the government.
The UK is one of the most mundane and fair countries in the world and definately one of the best places to be poor, this is pathetic.

Quote from Sky News: 'The worst affected parts of this street are The Carphone Warehouse and Currys Digital'
Says it all doesn't it.

Heh.
Says it all, yes.
Generic thugs posing as "rioters" are a common occurrence here in Italy.

...am I ringing any bells?

I'm willing to dig the corpse of Fiorenzo Bava Beccaris out of his grave in Turin and have it shipped to London along with instructions to perform a resurrection spell.

ROFL! Superb, I'm jealous I didn't think of it!

If I was PM, they'd have 1 hour to disperse, or I'd call in the Army to bolster ranks, and would use aggressive force to quell these idiots. We are far too soft in this country. We let the bad guy win, were in fact they need a stiff kicking. And those bleeding heart human rights fools can kiss my shiny metal ass. this country is struggling to keep above water financially, and they add to our problems. Kick them good and hard I say. treat them with the same disrespect as they treat innocent people.

These political puppets are idiots. Watching the news earlier and Teresa May could only muster up a "We condemn these acts of criminality and we'd all like to see this stopped as soon as possible...". For f*cks sake, at least use the water cannon as a bare minimum to control the crowd. What they're doing is trawling through hours of CCTV footage, identifying the idiots involved and then arresting them.

Meanwhile, shops, offices and homes have been ransacked and burnt to the ground and lives ruined. Insurance companies will no doubt drag their feet while carrying out surveys of the damage too. All this could have been avoided if the Police were allowed to clamp down fast with force. I'm not condoning rubber bullets, but CS gas and water cannons should have been used as soon as the Police came under attack.

It doesn't help that even bigger idiots are blaming multiculturalism, islam, asians, blacks etc. Look at the footage, while many seem to be black (most likely 3rd/4th generation British), there are many white participants too. This is an indictment of London's inner city education and social welfare system and nothing more. The forgotten and marginalized youth, call it what you want. Institutionalized racism on the Met Police's part as well.
Most middle class Londoners send their children to schools in expensive areas where they can afford to live, or make sacrifices and go private.

I think slowly these children will realize there's no get rich quick fix to life's woes. Part of this learning process should be tough and swift justice. Get their families involved. Split these ghettos up and rethink social housing. It'll never happen because society prefers to keep these people huddled up together and out of sight.

Of course there are those involved who are just bored and want to smash something up just to feel some emotion as a remedy to their bland, numb existence. That's been the case last night where other cities around the UK fell victim to this 'flash mob-cum-riot' phenomenon. NEET (Not in Employment, Education or Training) + Twitter = Smashy smashy!

Anyway, I'm going out tonight to sort out the Christmas shopping. I've got my eye on a Watches of Switzerland near here. I jest, of course. :)

Gotta hand it to the Vancouver Police here - shut down access into the riot area, gradually forced people to disperse.. They handled the riot pretty well, though they had officers with M16s, horses and tear gas... A lot more threatening looking than a guy with a billy club I'd imagine.

In Vancouver it was pretty centralised though right? It has now over several areas of London, north and south and also around the UK. I know your comment is more of an observation but I don't think you can really compare the way one was handled against the other.

Her two favourite words seem to be criminality and robust with a possible third being thuggish.

Of course it being end of term doesn't help... at least some of them will be kids who have nothing better to do than destroy things.

I have to admit, there is a certain satisfaction in smashing something repeatedly on the ground until it breaks.

Perhaps this is a sort of reset button for society. 'We're' basically telling the government who's really in charge, as it were. I don't know. Wish people were this mindlessly mobilized during the Iraq war demo. Tony Blair would have had a spontaneous cluster-***** at Number 10.

If this were a student fee's protest, you'd see kettling over a period of hours and a lot more beating with batons.

I think the police are scared of hurting someone. Imagine what would happen if a 'yoot' who happened to be black, fell to the ground and died. The ghetto's would be in uproar and the Con-Lib Dem coalition would end up looking pretty awful.
