I turned it off last week to prepare for losing it and I can’t say I’ve really missed it. If anything I’ve realised how rarely I actually used it.

I kinda found the hard press of 3D Touch be annoying and would frequently end up with just moving the cursor or the touch action only. I agree with others that the new long press may increase frequency of accidental presses on web page links etc, perhaps most for those initially switching over. But I was ambivalent about 3D Touch on my XS and haven’t missed it the past 5 days I’ve been using an 11 Pro.

Listen to the latest Upgrade podcast. Both Myke Hurley and Jason Snell say the loss of 3D Touch is a regression. In fact not having 3D Touch is about the only negative Hurley had to say about the new phones.

the move from 3D touch back to haptic boils down to this: 1-handed operations to now needing both hands, for example copy and paste is no longer easily done with 1 hand. the new copy and paste gesture requires 3 fingers to pinch in and pinch out, which requires something else to hold your phone (namely a second hand). although it is possible to tap tap tap to get to copy and paste, it takes at least 2 if not 3 times more inputs than before.

I liked 3D Touch as much as the next person but I just got done testing iOS13.1 select text, copy, paste and I was able to do it one handed. The extra press to get the paste is a step backwards but it isn’t anything a long touch added in a update cannot fix.

I don’t think we lost very much on the iPhone but my 2nd generation iPad gained access to all the extra functions my iPhone XS had access to last year and that is huge. In my opinion the trade off is minimal and the gain is well justified.

This is part of the new trend Apple has of taking away stuff. Headphone Jack, Headphone Jack Dongle, 3d Touch, etc...

I wonder what will be next.

To be fair iPad added some fantastic functionality.

Those that didnt use 3dt or comparing to android long press don’t understand that long press will never replace the functionality 100% nor be as on the mark as 3dt. Some, like this post have blinders on and don’t understand. It shows.

How to spin the headphone jack? Marketing as well?
Again. Apple clearly didn’t care about it, a simple long press was enough to mimic 3D Touch functionality.

I agree haptic Touch is similar to 3dt. Not identical, though. Like the headphone jack, Apple is moving on with 3dt.
Moving on but giving us a worse solution. This touch pressing delay drives me insane.

Its not worse. With 3DT you require effort to press on the screen which may result in a dropped phone if you are using one handed. Long Press requires no effort and also results in less smudges on the screen. It was always superior to 3DT.

TBH, both are ideal but don't seem to be able to coexist without neutering some of 3DT functionality 🤦🏾‍♂️

Never had issues in which my phone dropped from 3D Touch. Besides, you barely had to "force" anything lol.
It does though. The phones are already huge. Streching my finger to the spot and then putting pressure on it requires more effort than simply holding your finger at the spot. It happens frequently for me that the keyboard trackpad never even activated despite putting pressure on it while long press has 100% success rate.

Unfortunately for Apple, Android has made long press so common that it was difficult for common folk to even understand the functionality was there. Long Press will have wider adoption.

On my iPhone X I simply turned off 3DT and faced no issues. If you keep it on, it results in a weird mishmash of both.

Many of the 3DT APIs have been neutered on iOS 13 and apps wont bother with it in the future.

Its not worse.
The extra delay alone makes it worse. After all, the supposed similar extra delay with the home button made iPhones unusable previously, so clearly something like that can only be worse.

Doesn't seem like that can be the case given that 3D Touch is faster and can do more. Some might prefer one over the other for personal reasons, but that's not the same thing.

The phone is totally unusable with that extra delay. Going to ebay find a phone on iOS 12.

Given how the issue is polarised, it is safe to say it is a matter of person preference. Apple went with the path, which offered more benefits (price, battery life).

Personally I still use XS Max with disabled 3D touch. I'm actually liking it more on the iOS13 than before.

Guess I forgot the /s. However I like my 3dt but you know what...I’ll give it a try with it off and see what happens.

The effort involved was making 3DT unusable. No one aside from a few geeks even knew about it.

What does it do more?

That certainly doesn’t appear to be the case given that plenty of people have been using it and even miss its functionality.
What does it do more?
Fairly certain that has been covered quite well in a variety of posts in this thread and other similar ones.
No one aside from a few geeks even knew about it.
Seems like that would apply to the supposed home button delay.

This isn’t true. What happened was, Apple didn’t market 3D Touch, it was a confused functionality for consumers that accidentally invoked an action and didn’t know how to manipulate it. But, for those who actually understood its functionality, executed 3D Touch perfectly. The only reason Apple discontinue 3D Touch, is because haptic touch has expanded well beyond how it first started, but it does not share the same properties as 3D Touch in some aspects.

I'm bummed to lose 3D Touch - which was nice for the few situations which called for it. But I've gotten mostly used to haptic touch, which is 90% percent as good, and I will gladly take the extra battery life.
