Maybe for the OSX.;)

OSX isn't THAT good....
Win 7 IMO narrowed the gap...

I love the VAIO F. Supposedly the display isn't great but I've never seen a single thing wrong with it. If the new MBP isn't out in two weeks I'm getting one of them instead.

What's wrong with the display that's been said?

I would probably get the HP EliteBook 8540w.

Pros:
- Military grade casing - a Brillo pad cannot scratch it
- USB 3.0
- ATI FirePro/NVIDIA Quadro discrete gfx - FirePro coming in a month or so
- 3 year warranty with on-site included
- Same price as a MBP if not cheaper
- Optional BD drive

Cons:
- Weight
- No MBP elegance
- We haven't seen Apple's latest yet

I'm impartial to OSX vs. Windows 7. I'll use either in any given circumstance.

I've convinced myself to stick with Apple though.

The HP EliteBook 8540w lowest model with i7 is like $3000.... no thanks....

Free of Virus ?

No... but if you don't do stupid stuff, you most likely won't get a virus... don't go looking for one and you won't get one....

If you're that concerned with viruses go linux....

Here's another laptop I spec'd for fun.

Sager NP8690 - $1689
15.6” HD+ 16:9 LED (1600x900)
Intel i7-820QM 1.73-3.06GHz
ATI Radeon HD5870 1GB
4GB DDR3 1333MHz
320GB 7200RPM HDD
Windows 7 Home Premium x64
Your average webcam/wireless n/gigabit/fingerprint reader

That would be a nice machine if size and weight wasn't a big deal.

You may be mistaken. This one has an i7-620M.

$1679

It isn't the specs of what's in the box - there aren't very many PC laptops that have quality LCD displays, so whatever you get, it just won't be quite up to snuff.

Me - I'm a glossy and I love the uMBP glass screen despite the glare. Some prefer the matte screen - either way, I think you'd be hard pressed to find PCs with screens that could match up.

I'd look to buy a Core i3 dirt cheap PC laptop myself in lieu of a Mac.

Heat

"For the most part, the VAIO F Series never became uncomfortably hot. After 15 minutes of streaming a Hulu video at full screen, we measured temperatures of 86 degrees Fahrenheit on the underside of the notebook, 97 degrees in the center of the keyboard, and 98 degrees on the touchpad. (While temperatures in the 90s are warm, we don’t become concerned until they break 100 degrees.) On the bottom of the notebook—near the vents on the left side—we measured temps of 110 degrees. "

Does anything think this is funny.... My mac hits 136 degress without running anything intense... and it probably gets up to like 160-180 degress when running games.....fan full speed.....

The sony vaio F is looking like my alternative... I think the specs I chose got me to like around 2100... I'd end up spending 2800-3000 on the MBP.....

The vaio F is only around 7 lbs.... which still can be carried around as opposed to a 10 lb machine....

Also, the screen is 16.4, a great number, not too big and not too small

How's
NVIDIA Quadro FX 880M graphics with 1 GB dedicated DDR3 video memory
compared to the GT 330M?

So the OS determines what you can browse? How....sad.

Lol...no... I meant, don't be stupid and download .exe off like limewire or open up files that get detected....

I believe the review is recording temperatures in Celsius, and I sure as hell hope you meant Fahrenheit for yours, lol :).

Well, ya got a point there.

Yah seriously I don't get how ppl get infected on windows srsly.... are they browsing porn sites that require .exe plugins or something? Just get like AVG and don't be dumb... I don't get people lol....

we measured temperatures of 86 degrees Fahrenheit

I think that whole thing was in Fahrenheit.... Crazy eh?

I doubt the laptop runs THAT cold.... Someone has to run crysis on it and tell us what the temp is :p

Yah, I was talking Fahrenheit on my comp

Nope look carefully. For 1679 it comes with an i5 processor. Just underneath the first line it says that the i7 processor is available (if you customize it) and customizing it starts at $2600. They even charge you $1 dollar for each MS sticker and Intel Sticker they stick on your machine.

Again, you are mistaken. HP discounts heavily for prebuilt models, and charges extra for CTO's (dumb, I agree).

See here: http://www.google.com/products?hl=en&q=FN095UT&scoring=p

Edit: They are called "Smart Buy" models.

Ehh... ATI Mobility RADEON® HD 4670 – 1GB isn't as good as the Geforce GT 330M...

Also.. the i7 they have is a dual core I think with a 4 MB cache.... bleh
Plus, decently customized brings it to around 1800.....

You can get the QUAD CORE DESKTOP PROCESSOR ONE HERE..
But seriously, who the hell wants that? Even apple wont put a desktop processor in their notebooks.. heat, battery, etc

http://configure.us.dell.com/dellst...p&cs=2244&link_number=17970655&kc=epp_lt_perf

OH and looked it up.... the 4670 is 10% faster then the 330m. Google it.

The vaio F has a **** screen. It's not LED, and it's the year 2010.. seriously... It will suck the battery.. and I saw it at BBUY.. it's a yellow screen..

Oh boy, was I wrong. You would think a laptop magazine whose sole purpose is to review.. laptops.. would measure heat also using applications such as Core Temp or Real Temp, to accurately reflect the actual processor temperature.

Oh and the HP has a dual core i7... NOT quad core....

The sony F has a quad core in there...

ATI Mobility RADEON® HD 4670 – 1GB how does that card match up to the Geforce GT 330M?

Oh wow I saw nimski62 post

OH and looked it up.... the 4670 is 10% faster then the 330m. Google it.

Wow the dell studio xps is looking nice....

You guys think that's better than the Sony Vaio F?

I saw the Sony Vaio RAM speed is 1066 NOT 1333.... the dell studio xps has 1333 mhz ram

I'm sure it makes a big difference

It actually DOES make a pretty decent difference.

I looked it up and the Dell is a far superior machine to the Sony, even weight wise.

My friend has the studio xps and i LOVE the screen..

I believe... I am coming up short on any reviews on this, but it is their midrange mobile graphics and seems to be places where the 4650 and 4670 mobile gpus are. So the performance would be similar.

However, I would take a DELL XPS over a Sony ANY DAY. I've just hear some bad stuff about Sony laptops. Everyone that I know who has bought an XPS laptop loves them. Dell also supports the XPS models much better than any of the mainstream models. They are quick on repairs and parts.

Another says

"The 4670 is a little faster. The build quality on the Sony and the keyboard is very good. Also, the Sony comes with a high quality camera and built in SSD reader. The 330M that comes with the Sony will be 5-10% slower than the ATI on Direct X11 games I suspect - insignificant difference. I couldn't get the Dell with BluRay at the time I was ordering. Now they are offering it. I have owned 3 previous Dell laptops and this is my 2nd Sony. If you can get the Dell at or below the Sony price, go with it. I give a slight edge to the Dell on specs, but I don't have one in front of me to compare. Dell build quality has been inconsistent in the past, but lately they have been very good. You can't go wrong with either one. "

SEEMS people like the build of the sonys... but like the specs of the dell.... I dunno I've heard good and bad stuff about sonys and I've heard good and bad stuff about dells....

I'm waiting for Arrandale, but... I value my computer experience over the CPU. So even if it never came out, I wouldn't switch... Having to use Windows 7 or Ubuntu... shudder...

You convinced me on the Dell Studio XPS....

That computer IMO is better than the DELL alienware for the price... I hate the weight/bulk/look of the alienware.... blehhhh

How would that computer be for games? I assume it would be good.

newegg.com

There are tons of good choices out there. :)

Checked newegg.... they just have toshibas, asus and acer... EW.... and theirs aren't customizable blehhh

I've felt the dell.. nothing wrong with the build quality. You will regret buying the sony.. I'm telling you the screen is junk.. the laptop overall is bulkier. Also, I don't know why you want the i7-720 vs the i7-620.. granted its a faster processor it just DOESNT belong in a notebook. Its too hot and sucks battery.. the benchmarks for the 2 aren't too different due to the clock speed of the i7-620 topping 3ghz in turbo mode.
