I'm telling you man, go for the Sager versus the spec you just quoted. You get:

Better GFX card
Better wireless card
Better sound card
Guaranteed 1333MHz DDR3 memory

... for cheaper!

The Dell has little margin boosters tied to it.. like 2yrs of McAfee, Lojack, online backup, etc.

Edit: Here's benchmarks with the GTX285, mind you the HD5870 is equiv to a desktop HD5750-5770, so the results will be even better, plus DX11!

True... but man I'd hate to have a computer that only lasts 1.5 hrs... GRRRRRR

I guess that's what my netbook is for... if you are serious that the sager is only 7 lbs... I definitely consider it

Bleh... I don't know... ppl are saying the quads in laptops are overheating

What is better
ATI MOBILITY RADEON HD 5870 Graphics with 1GB GDDR5 Memory
vs.
Nvidia GeForce GTX 285M Graphics with 1GB GDDR3 Video Memory

I was 2 clicks away from buying that same machine but I ended up building a desktop instead.

If you want the most top of the line, latest and greatest laptop, the Sager is the way to go. They've been around for a very long time, and are well respected. I've done plenty of research. Check out the Notebookreview.com thread I posted. There is also some YouTube reviews that show you more "in person" shots.

When you whip it out at public places, you can snicker at all the kids with their Alienwares and Toshiba Qosmios. :D

In short, the HD5870 is the fastest single mobile GPU on the market now, DESPITE the GTX285 costing more!

ATI for the ***** win.

EDIT: The HD5870 is also DX11 versus the GTX285 which is DX10. So if you play Battlefield: Bad Company 2, you get all the bells and whistles :).

SOMEONE ANSWER MY QUESTION WITH THE ATI vs the GEFORCE

Ummmmmm..... this computer is the one.... I'm pretty sure....

Way cheaper than any macbook... way better.... I love my mac, but I only use it for games and documents... I did use to use it for sound recording, but sound recording has gotten a lot better on windows recently (still not as good as mac IMO, but still)... I have the Early 2008 one non-unibody, so the battery sucks... now I only get like 1.5 hrs... so I'm used to it.... I use my toshiba dual core netbook in class... so I don't rly care much about battery life, however I do care about bulk and the Sager isn't too big....

It's incredible, those who are waiting for the new mbp and are using it for anything else but a specific mac purpose... get the sager....

I don't think I'm even gonna look into the Arrandale MBPs when they come out...

Yawn... just another "If the updated MBP doesn't have X, I'm going to buy Y from Z" thread.

You sir, should take a look at the Sager :p

Definitely depends on what you'd have used your MBP for.

My alternative is a ThinkPad (and I will buy one as soon as my uni has MSDNAA licenses for Windows 7 if no Arrandale MBPs will come out during that time).

Lenovo Thinkpad T510

Intel Core i7 620M 2x 2.66 GHz, 4 MB-L3-Cache + 512KB-L2-Cache, TDP 35 Watt

4 GB PC3-8500 DDR3-SDRAM 1066 MHz, max. 8 GB
(2 x 2 GB )

320GB SATA 2.5", 7.200U/min
Active Protection

nVidia NVS 3100M, 512 MB RAM

10/100/1000 Intel 82577LM Ethernetadapter
Intel WLan 6300 a/g/n
Bluetooth 2.0
UMTS / HSDPA integrated

1 x ExpressCard 34
3 x USB 2.0
1 x eStata / USB 2.0
1 x RJ-45 Gigabit LAN
1 x VGA DB 15
1 x Display Port
1 x Mic In/Line In, Line Out (Combo)
1 x DockingPort
1 x Kensington Slot
1 x Firewire 1394
1 x 5-in-1 Card Reader (MMC, Memory Stick, Mem Stick Pro, SD, SDHC)

Disadvantages to a possible Arrendale MBP are
- probably better display of the MBP, but the Lenovo has a Anti-Glare display default
- inferior graphics card. seriously, the T510's NVS 3100M is crap

But instead you will get a rock-solid machine and 3 years of warranty (default where I'd buy the T510). Also very important to me is the possibility to change most parts of the machine by yourself without voiding any warranty.
You can change your keyboard, install a WWAN card, remove the DVD driver and replace it with Lenovo's bay adapter.
Additionally, you also have plenty of peripheral hardware available, like docking stations, 9-cell batteries, etc.

Nice build, but I would:

- Keep the 320GB 7200RPM versus the 500GB 5400RPM. SSD later? :D
- Pick Arctic Silver 5 over IC Diamond. IC Diamond actually discolored my desktop CPU. I'll never use it again.
- Are you sure you want a quad laptop? I wouldn't worry about heat because it's all within spec, but will you notice a difference for the money you pay, and less battery life?

That is all! :D

Sager It Is!! I Will Look Into Purchasing It This Weekend! Thanks Guys!

I hope all you guys are happy with the Windows-based PCs you buy. However, I doubt that any of you could be truly happy with any PC. You'll find a reason to bitch about something. That's the problem with geeks.

I love Thinkpads. Lenovo actually prefers to walk you through repairs over the phone and encourages you to disassemble the system.

Although, I would prefer the HP EliteBook vs the Thinkpads for a business-class laptop.

That's true, unless of course...

I design my own case
I work with Intel and engineer my own processor
I work with AMD and engineer my own graphics chip
I work with ASUS and engineer my own motherboard
I work with Apple and develop my own battery
I work with Microsoft and code my own Windows Entity

Then hopefully, I will be 100% happy! Until then, we'll see :).

Sadly... this is the first time in 15 years I've considered buying anything other than a Mac. But I'm kind of sick of Apple becoming the iEverything, and kind of fed up waiting for a long, long overdue MBP update. So now I'm looking at HP EliteBook 8540w and the Vaio F.

Something I thought I would never ever do might come to pass in the next couple of weeks... return to Windows.

Sager It Is!! I Will Look Into Purchasing It This Weekend! Thanks Guys!

Are you a student? You can pick up the dell for 1600 if you are one. OH and NEVER heard of sager... how can you spend that much money on a no-name company here in the states?

I am a student... the dell I configured with student discount is like 1800 before tax and shipping = around 2000 after....

The sager has WAY better specs... I want to use it for games... I have a netbook for docs....

Srsly look at the Sager... that thing is a powerhouse....

The Vaio F ppl say there are display problems and I've heard bad stuffa bout sony....

The Elitebook is hella expensive if you go for the i7.... around 3000+

The Sager specs u can build for 2000 are very impressive, look at my past posts... The specs on that computer will be better than anything mac comes out in the near future...

I hope all you guys are happy with the Windows-based PCs you buy. However, I doubt that any of you could be truly happy with any PC. You'll find a reason to bitch about something. That's the problem with geeks.

And people don't bitch about the macbook pros!???

Dude everyone on the arrandale forums is laughing about how when arrandale mbps come out, people are going to compain about something or other

People always complain.... even with the best.... there is always SOMETHING wrong...

I mean come on... I love my dual core toshiba netbook and I still complain... IT SHOWS FINGERPRINTS... FINGERPRINTS FOR GOSH SAKES! :p

Oh and it could have a 10 hr battery life instead of a 6 hr one... but it's dual core and I expected it

I didn't think you were serious, lol. I would go for something in the HP line if I wasn't going MBP, that or Toshiba. Both make very stable and long lasting laptops, that often have a good mix of power and battery life.

Sorry, just had to respond to this. HP does not make stable, long lasting laptops. My HP laptop screwed me over in just two years. A normal laptop should have a good lifetime for at least 3 years.

The only laptop that I'll get instead of a top of the line matte 15" MBP is the Sony Z with the i7, quad RAID0 SSD, blue ray burner, premium carbon fiber and the HD display options.

15 year Mac user here too with the same sentiment. I can't believe I am actually considering a PC.

If I could hackintosh that Vaio Z reliably it would be a done deal.

Holy cow son, looks like you can't make up your mind!

I actually have an F series, reading through the thread I feel bad I didn't see your franticness until now xD

computerpics006.jpg

First off, what they said about the temperature is true. The F series runs very cool, but the air coming out the side vent gets rather hot when you start cranking the machine (I've done some pretty hardcore stuff). Performance is ridiculous, I managed to get 260fps in Wolfenstein ET (I know, it's an old as piss game, but still).

The 64bit geekbench test yields scores up to 5800 (compared to a high end MBP getting 3900).

Mine gets 2 and a half hours on battery, but on battery the Sony (and HP envy, for that matter) only run at 933mhz (they are still rather fast at that speed, on par with a mid range macbook pro).

Build quality is so-so though, but what can you expect for a machine with all that stuff at its price ($1350 at best buy for the i7 720qm, 6gb ram, 500gb HD, bluray, 1080p screen).

Also, the fan runs all the time. That's how it stays cool, lol.

I was considering the sony vaio F though because I'm sure it will be better quality than a no-name brand... Even though it's a sony. I've had bad luck with no-name electronics before... Like my Haugg LCD monitor... blech

Sager is not a no name electronic company.

First, I'll start with some copy and paste research on background.

Sager builds their notebooks off the Clevo design.

CLEVO is a large Taiwanese computer company specializing in laptops. While the Clevo brand name is perhaps not widely known, their products are re-branded and sold by known boutique brand OEMs (Original Equipment Manufacturers)… notably Sager, VoodooPC, Falcon Northwest, Eurocom, etc.
They are also considered (by whoever knows about notebooks) to design and manufacturer the best of the best notebooks in terms of superior build quality and innovative designs.

What has Clevo done to distinguish itself?
1994 - First Pentium notebook PC producer in Taiwan
1997 - World's 1st 15.1" notebook
2003 - World's 1st 17" WXGA notebook
2004 - World's 1st Intel Dual-Core notebook (M570 debuted)
2005 - World's 1st AMD X2 Dual-Core notebook (D900K and X2 released late 2005)
2006 - World's 1st notebook with SLI technology (M590K... 19")
2007 - World's 1st Quad-core notebook with SLI technology and RAID 5 (D900C already out, G0-stepping Intel Q6600/Q6700 was released)
2008 - World's 1st DDR3 notebook (M860TU... 15.4" w/ 8800M at debut time)

Sager Midern Computer, Inc., is an OEM computer manufacturer specializing in laptop computers. The company is generally publicly referred to as Sager Notebook Computer, as indicated by their website[1]. Sager, for short, is publicly recognizable for its high end gaming laptops. However, Sager offers a wide variety of services, including solutions for mobile gaming, video editing, and business applications[1]. In addition to selling physical hardware, Sager also offers complete support and repair services for all Clevo based Laptops. This service is offered even if the laptop was not ordered through Sager, although in that case the user must pay in full for all services provided. Although the company sells laptops via its own website, it also utilizes numerous resellers who sell the laptops with the Sager brand name.

Sager Midern Computer, Inc. was founded in 1985 by Shung Song Yuan[1]. The company was founded in City of Industry, California. Since its inception, Sager has remained at its office location in City of Industry. Although being physically located in California, Sager markets its products throughout all of the United States. During its time of operation, Sager has gained public recognition as the go to company for extreme high performance mobile computing[2].

If you want to blow $2000 on a laptop from Sager, fine. I wouldn't dare do that though.

I was really tempted to return the Sony and get a Dell after I saw what you said, but it gets really bad battery life. The sony has no problems pulling 2 and a half hours!

Sony has a lot of problems dude... and with a quad core and no cooling system... bleh.... You wouldn't do that why? Because Sager has awesome specs or because you have never heard of a decent company before? Dude all these "brand name" companies have way more problems than private computers... Sony, HP, Dell... all have multiple problems... I work as an IT and their all sucky.... Either build your own computer, get a mac, or get a private computer... I'm pissed that Alienware got taken over by dell....

Oh boy, was I wrong. You would think a laptop magazine whose sole purpose is to review.. laptops.. would measure heat also using applications such as Core Temp or Real Temp, to accurately reflect the actual processor temperature.

Did you read the quote? They aren't measuring CPU temp, but the actual temperature of the laptop in various locations.

Thanks for the info. I've heard of voodooPC and eurocom, but I've never quite heard that they were particularly good. Then again I've never looked. You're right though, a quick search for sager reviews shows a lot of positive responses from users.
I'm still worried about buying something so expensive from a company I know so little about. And the fact that they are an overseas company, while not a bad thing, makes dealing with them that much more troublesome... What if I need customer support or to make a return and/or exchange? I imagine it might be a bit harder to do that than with sony or dell (yeah, I know Sony is Japanese, but they have a strong presence in the US)

Anyway, I have another week and a half before I have to give up on Apple, but sager is definitely going to be one of the top choices I look at.

I said the Sony F's fan is always on. This is true, it has a quiet groan noise to it (and is almost never spinning at a constant rate).

It also has a squeaky spacebar (initially), and the viewing angle on the LCD is rather tight (vertically), but it has an awesome screen regardless.

What you get for the $$ varies - that Sager is barely better than my F series and in some ways, worse. I only paid $1500 (and $150 of that was tax) for this machine dude.

I'm not complaining, but there's no way in hell I'd pay $2000 for a laptop I couldn't try out in person first. Just saying!
