I've felt the dell.. nothing wrong with the build quality. You will regret buying the sony.. I'm telling you the screen is junk.. the laptop overall is bulkier. Also, I don't know why you want the i7-720 vs the i7-620.. granted its a faster processor it just DOESNT belong in a notebook. Its too hot and sucks battery.. the benchmarks for the 2 aren't too different due to the clock speed of the i7-620 topping 3ghz in turbo mode.

Well the dell comes with

Intel® Core™ i7-820QM Quad Core Processor 1.73GHz (3.06GHz Turbo Mode, 8MB Cache)

Very impressive.... I got the XPS to about $1,754 with top specs... No blue ray drive which is a bummer... but I'm not one for watching movies.... also I don't like to buy the RAM from the companies... they overprice it....

I hope you know that ARRANDALE = i7-620m AKA 2core processor.(the newer one we're waiting for in the MBPs)

The quadcore(i7-720,820m) is the desktop one stuffed into a damn laptop and is NOT considered arrandale.

That is the computer guys....

THAT is the best computer you can get for the price....

Dimensions & Weight
Width: 15.15" (384.9mm)
Height: 0.95" (24.1mm) front / 1.34" (33.95mm) back
Depth: 10.02" (254.6mm)
Weight: Starting weight of 6.3 lbs. (2.87 kg)2(15.6" WLED display 6 cell battery). Weights will vary depending on configurations and manufacturing variability.

And awesome....

Hence... the MBPs won't touch the quad cores.... another reason the new MBPs will suck monkeybutt

4/6... hopefully by that time, the new Arrandales will be out.

But for the price of that Dell, check out the Sager laptop I posted on page 2. Nearly identical specs except it has the HD5870 with DX11. Dell does have a longer warranty and larger HDD though.

Edit: The mobile HD5870 is the single most fastest gfx card, aside from SLI/CF kits.

Yes except most people would disagree. The damn quadcore processor should NOT be in there. Why would you possibly want that stuffed into a laptop?? The i7-620 will handle you games AMAZINGLY. The only time you would need the quadcore would be if you were encoding video. and most people have desktops to do that. You will get 1.5 hours batt life MAX with the quadcore vs 3+ with the 2cores + 2 threads.. the mobile processor is MUCH better then the i720.

You should read up on the heat issues ppl have with the quads.

The model number for the quadcore is 1645 and for the dualcode arrandale is 1647 (the much newer and refreshed one) You should really reconsider.. your gaming wont be affected and you will have a much cooler laptop.

But the Quad Cores have a Cache of 6-8 MB as opposed to the dual core which have 4 MB... how much of a difference would that make?

Ohhh, I see what you did there. You added features I wouldn't use, which is why my price was different.

I'd still get the Sager for the gfx card alone.

Hmmm... well.... it has a quad core... ppl seem to not like those... also are the Sagers bulky?

Freakin dells don't even have a dual core i7 in their computers.... it jumps from i5 to i7 quad

Dunno I'm really liking the dell studio xps 16....

I'm just nervous about the heat and quad core....

Free of Virus ?

you mac lemmings dont seem to understand windows 7 is much more secure than mac osx. microsoft made their mission to tackle security for windows 7 due to the bad reputation from previous windows, they have a whole team dedicated to security, usually vulnerabilities are fixed within 24 hours.

on the other hand mac osx are much less secure by comparison, there are many obvious vulnerabilities listed everywhere (google it) that took apple MONTHS turnaround time to fix.

The ONLY reason mac osx seem more secure is because hackers/virus script kiddies do not bother with it and focuses all on windows. God help us if some serious eastern european hackers do decide to focus on osx....

Take a skilled hacker, they are much more likely to get into osx than windows 7.

This is the first result from google, it's a few years old but nothing has changed except odds are much more favorable towards the windows 7 side now : http://news.techworld.com/security/1798/mac-os-x-security-myth-exposed/

What do you guys think about the Studio XPS 16 that I've been posting about... a lot of ppl like it.... shipping time is far away though to have it customized

Hmmm... well.... it has a quad core... ppl seem to not like those... also are the Sagers bulky?

Yeah, they are bulky and quite heavy. I would also expect poor battery life. I personally would not get one for school or business. I would however, definitely get one over an Alienware any day.

True, true....

The studio xps 16 looks like it has the best of both worlds... it's not too bulky and it has insane specs... I wouldn't expect it to last more than 3 hrs.. but that's what my netbook is for... except when I need to type a document or something and only have my main laptop....

$2018.... Hmmmm

That's the I ordered and got early this week. It's amazing and for a good price. Sagers have really good cooling systems so it doesn't get too hot. I played Crysis and the GPU never went over 70 C, while the CPU never went above 65 C; and they idle at way lower temps.

Battery won't last longer than 1.5 hours though. But for the specs in that I'm willing to sacrifice battery life (Im near a power source most of the time).

^^ FOR $$1634.. helluva deal

How bulky is it? How many lbs?

Definitely not as slim as a MBP. It's bulkier but keep in mind it has a quad core and a top GPU so the heatsinks for those are big!

From the Sager site:

7.38 LBs with Battery Pack
14.75" (w) x 10" (d) x 1.65"~2" (h)

I've carried it around and found it manageable. Definitely not light but still somewhat portable (more so than 17" notebooks).

I'm telling you man, go for the Sager versus the spec you just quoted. You get:

Better GFX card
Better wireless card
Better sound card
Guaranteed 1333MHz DDR3 memory

... for cheaper!

The Dell has little margin boosters tied to it.. like 2yrs of McAfee, Lojack, online backup, etc.

Edit: Here's benchmarks with the GTX285, mind you the HD5870 is equiv to a desktop HD5750-5770, so the results will be even better, plus DX11!
