I'll be honest; this episode was not my favorite.

I thought it was really good. Classic Lost tease with the statue of (what appears to be) Anubis, but we still haven't seen the most important part which is the front. Great lines by Sawyer (eyeliner, plato :D ) and I totally did not see Sawyeret/Julawyer happening but they did. Always nice to see Richard pop out of nowhere, I love that character. Some things to chew over... The statue - what does it mean, why is it there. The Hostiles - Why did they kill Paul and almost killed Amy. Isn't there a truce? And why did Paul have an Ankh necklace, which the statue was holding two of. Why did Richard want his body back, is he more important then we think? And where the hell is Rose and Bernard?!

Now we know what happens in the three years to everyone and how they got to where they are and the story can move forward. The only thing I'm concerned about is they have two stories going on, the '77 folks on the '08 Ajira folks. On one hand I like it when they tell only one groups story per episode cuz there's no switching around and we learn it all fast, but that means the other story waits while one is being told. I wonder what approach they will take.

I have to agree  There really wasn't much progress. We know a few more back story bits but the whole thing wasn't pushed forwards.

Theres only 1 country between Egypt and Tunisia (where the 'exit' is?) Maybe there's some kind of connection there? It's almost as if the island is on the complete other side of the world to these places and as the island moves, maybe the exit changes too?

I don't think that the exit changes. Widmore had a camera set up at the exact spot where Locke exited because he knew that that was the place you exit the island. Probably because that's where he exited when Ben tricked him into leaving.

semi-random thoughts:

- i think that the island's ancient civilization that generated the statue is at the 'origin' of the egyptian civilization. ancient people from the island ended up in the sahara and eventually settled in egypt.

- there must be a natural/ancient entrance to the cave where the wheel is. i think it's in the temple, and that is what the smoke monster is guarding.
Maybe in the future 70's past the bears will have managed to escape from their cages (as per the initial joke), and one of them ended up in the cave, thus eventually moving the island (and ending up in the desert to be found by charlotte).

- why did Frank Lepidus and likely Sun not travel back to the 70s like hurley, jack and kate? what about sayid?

- will jack, kate and hurley also be integrated into Dharma? how does Sawyer sneak them in?

- If Alpert met Sawyer in '74, why doesn't he recognize him later on?

Obviously to do with changes in storyline, but they could probably wind up with Richard just not letting on about Sawyers fate. Richard seems quite used to this whole time travel malarky after all.

Richard has not met Sawyer face to face, he only seen Locke

Daniel says and the writers also say you can't cahgne the past or future and it is all continous.

I quite liked this back story, now where can I get some of that Dharma Merlot.

Now I know why everybody needed to get back to the island.

I kind'a think I do but it might not be what you're thinking.

What I'm thinking too.

I liked the scene where young Charlotte waves at newly arrived Faraday, apparently finding him familiar. This sets us up for a scene where Faraday will talk Charlotte's mother into taking Charlotte off the island, an incident that Charlotte then recalls as an adult. It'll be fun finding out who Charlotte's parents are, including the possibility that Faraday is her father, not her romantic admirer, and that's why he was trying to take care of her.

It's about time for them to introduce an identical twin for one of the characters whose story currently doesn't make sense, so it can turn out to be his brother or her sister all along!

I'm not sure about Frank, but I figure since Sun didn't bring the baby, the island doesn't consider her as being all she was when she left.

When did they meet post-1974?
i am not sure if we ever se them face to face in seasons 1-4, but he certainly must have been aware of the losties, and sawyer was captured with jack and kate, spending some time with the others.
and he is the one who gave locke the file on sawyer, having him offing his father
but i suppose that it's possible that he does remember but just goes along to see how things develop

than for Frank it must be the beard :)

Are we sure they're not in that time frame? I missed something.

Yes, I'd say that we're sure that they aren't in that (70's) time frame. If they were, that Dharma station (the one Caesar and Locke were in) wouldn't have been empty, and the Dharma people would have been freaking out over the Ajira plane crash.

I have a feeling that Locke and Sun will somehow be responsible for bringing their other halves (Jack and Jin) and everyone else back to the correct time.

For now, this is an interesting way for the writers to tell more of the Dharma story.

OK that makes sense. This show was a lot easier to follow when I was watching it on DVD and not once a week with fifteen commercial breaks.

About the egyptian civilization connection, that's great and all, but still... four toes?

Why hasn't "Jungle Love" by the Steve Miller Band become the Lost theme song? Now that they've added time travel to the saga of island survival, romance, teamwork, rainstorms, tropical food, memories, mystery, insanity, and endless questions and answers, almost every line in the song seems appropriate!

I met you on somebody's island.
You thought you had known me before.
I brought you a crate of papaya.
They waited all night by your door.
You probably wouldn't remember.
I probably couldn't forget.
Jungle love in the surf in the pouring rain.
Everything's better when wet.

Jungle love it's drivin' me mad.
It's makin' me crazy.
Jungle love it's drivin' me mad.
It's makin' me crazy.

But lately you live in the jungle.
I never see you alone.
But we need some definite answers
so I thought I would write you a poem.
The question to everyone's answer
is usually asked from within.
But the patterns of the rain
and the truth they contain
have written my life on your skin.

This show is just beyond belief... in an awesome way I mean. How can they a tie a script so neatly and complex is amazing. It's good to see some questions answered with fewer questions, lol.

oh man, you guys enjoy seeing michelle dessler tonight?

glad to see she's reincarnated and probably gave birth to tony's baby. maybe she can get in touch with him some how off the island and form a dharma/ctu supergroup

haha I was thinking that when I saw her. Now that Jin has travelled back in time he eventually leaves the island and becomes a CTU Agent... can't remember the character's name :D

I've read some interesting points on gitsiegirl.com, i thought its worth sharing...

2. A brief glimpse of the statue. We still don’t know what it is, but now we know how it broke.
An Earthquake?

7. New theory!!! What if Richard and Jacob are arch enemies like Ben and Widmore? Maybe, Richard was a corpse like Christian (and now Locke) and was on the Black Rock when it crashed. The island somehow brings him back to “life” and that is how Richard understands the process. Anyway, somehow Richard and Jacob are enemies and that is why Jacob must be kept in the shack. Richard is truly the mastermind behind all of it. This would explain why Richard is so “old,” why Jacob is trapped in the cabin and why ultimately Richard seems to be there for all the important events. Thank goodness that Nestor Carbonell’s other show bombed because he seems pretty central to the plot here.

10. I wonder if who the baby is even matters. But, if it does then I think it would have to be one of the male characters in his 30’s. That would be Jack, Sawyer, Ben or Desmond. It’s not Ben because we were witness to his birth. My guess would be either Jack or more likely Desmond since we know he is “special.” Plus, we really know nothing about Desmond’s parents.

And this image is very interesting...

tawaret.jpg

Its Tawaret...

Taweret was the ancient Egyptian goddess of maternity and childbirth, protector of women and children.

nah, not tawaret at all, IMO.

the vest is that typical of a male god (anubi?), female gods have typically long dresses, whereas tawaret in particular is usually naked.
in addition tawaret's figure is short and stocky, unlike the statue.
She had the body of a hippo, with the tail of a crocodile and the limbs of a lion. All 3 are completely absent from the statue.

the statue is carrying at least one, or probably two Ankh, but this is common to all egytian gods, not specific of tawaret.

personally i don't think it is a specific god, but more likely a generic egyptian god, or possibly a precursor to the egyptian pantheon.

Maybe that statue was built to look like a human because well, they don't have hippos, lions and such on the island? So it's the same statue (sort of) just built to represent a human instead. Maybe if the Egyptians did come from the island then they later adapted the figure to be represented as an amalgamation of animals?
