It would certainly fit in well with the islands birthing issues.
it would, but so would Anubis the Jackal, as the Guardian of the Necropolis and Guide to the Underworld and so would a dozen other deities with putative connections with different aspects of the island mythology. and those would actually have much closer resemblance to the statue than tawaret (like human limbs, the correct clothes and so on.
in most of them the distinguishing part is the head, so until we see that of the statue we cannot tell, assuming that the statue correspond to a specific egyptian god/goddess.
Maybe that statue was built to look like a human because well, they don't have hippos, lions and such on the island? So it's the same statue (sort of) just built to represent a human instead. Maybe if the Egyptians did come from the island then they later adapted the figure to be represented as an amalgamation of animals?
my thinking too, as mentioned in the earlier post it could be a generic 'egyptian' god, a synthesis of multiple gods or a precursor to them, if the island culture precedes the egyptian one. Or maybe is a faraoh, or maybe Richard Alpert (RA), or one of the losties.

I think for the statue, it makes sense that it could be the god of fertility as discussed on the last page, but it also makes sense that it could be Anubis. The Island has always used the dead to communicate with and manipulate people, so this would fit in just like the god of fertility. My best guess, and I'm sure this has been speculated in this thread, is that the ancient egyptians originated on the island, and upon "spinning the wheel" (or whatever they did the first time to "move" the island), they were transported to the Tunesian desert, where they go on to build the pyramids and become chapters in our history books. The great pyramids have always been a huge mystery, so it fits with LOST quite well.

I also think it would be awesome if the statue's face was Locke, or Alpert, or...Jack? Someone from the Island. That would be a sweet ending.

I was watching "Ancient Aliens" on the history channel and was thinking on the same lines. How much longer is it before some UFO's show up? LOL

I hope that doesn't happen. I feel like that would be a cop-out way to explain everything.

It's like the fall-back 'amnesia' or 'it was my twin' explanations in soap operas.....

Deus ex Machina.

LOST wouldn't do that to us. Heroes, maybe, but not LOST...

At this point, i am thinking the same. why pinpoint to one specific historic god/goddess when s/he can have a much more familiar face? Also agree on the tunisian connection. the major limit i see in that is that it's not 'twisty' enough for lost.

I get the feeling that this is a distraction to the main story. A little teaser to kind of wrap up the 4 toed statue. Answered, but unanswered. In other words, answered LOST style

I disagree, out of hopefullness. I may be alone, but I have thought since we saw that 4-toed foot, that the statue plays a key roll in the mythology of the Island. It is obvious that the Island is very old, and the statue has always been an example of that notion. Now, seeing it in full (sort of), and seeing that it relates through the Ankh's to the story line (the necklace), I think I may be right.

If I was one of the writers, my ending would probably go something like this:
You finally see the statue's face, and it belongs to none other than John Locke. It turns out Locke has been reincarnated many times as the leader of this Island. Every time, it was his responsibility to lead a group of important people to the Island, advance civilization in some way, and return it to the real world - for example, the great pyramids. Locke and the Island have been an important part of Earth's entire history - religion, technology, politics, science - and now with the introduction of the time travel element, Earth's next advancement will have them traveling through time. The show ends with Locke taking his place as leader of the others, now mostly populated by 815 and 316 survivors who follow every word he says.

I just kind of wrote down whatever popped into my head here, but Locke being the statue and being the leader is the important thing to me. I think something like this would be a very satisfying ending.

That reminds me too much of The Matrix, I also think it makes Locke a little less important (since everyone keeps saying he's special/important). I think he has to be a one off but just mentioned for a very long time that he is coming. That other leaders have come and gone in the form of Richard or whoever, some little fact or detail that was similar enough to get the hostiles thinking Ben was supposed to be this important Locke-quality character.

But the space connection could become true.
Remember back in series 3 when they were building a run way (I think it was, did we ever find out?). They have been literally building up to something from as far back as series 3.

(edit: nix that. Apparently the runway was used to land the Ajira plane. http://lostpedia.wikia.com/wiki/Runway

DAMN THIS SHOW!

I have a feeling this is going to be one of those things that is better watched a second time after having seen it all and being confused the first.

Damn... I was only half kidding about the Alien Connection...

From that Wiki linked above:

SAWYER: So, when you pulled us out of those polar bear cages and put us on the chain gang, what the hell you have us breaking all those rocks for anyway?
JULIET: We were building a runway.
SAWYER: Runway, for what?
JULIET: [Turns to him] The aliens.
[She smirks]
JULIET: I don't know what for, do you think they told me everything?

I don't think John is the recurring Leader throughout time.

I still think Walt is the next successor in line.

I think your way would be awesome too. Imagine Walt's face on the statue :p

Seriously, though, it would be cool if somthing were to happen that was out of Locke's control, and Walt shows up mysteriously and saves the day. Walt taking over for Locke is very logical and makes perfect sense in the grand scheme of the show, I just feel like Locke is more important than the average leader.

Does anyone remember when Hurley found the Dharma bus a couple of seasons back? there was a dead guy inside right?! my friend told me that the name tag on the guy was LaFleur....Can Anyone confirm this!!!

If I remember correctly, that was Roger Linus, Ben's dad. They were in the Van together when Ben let the gas out and killed the Dharma people. He was an alcoholic, which explains all the beer in the trunk.

Yeah, it said 'Roger' on the dead guy's name tag.

Not that I think it's meaningful, but does anyone else find it weird that the Dharma uniforms had names on them? I mean, it doesn't seem like there were that many people in the Dharma Initiative. Even if there were 300-400 people, after a while you learn everyone's name....

I've worked at an overnight summer camp that had 300+ campers and 140 staff. You knew everyone's name in 2 weeks....

Thanks for the correction :)

You're right its a bit weird, but maybe Dharma was a really big organization with thousands of workers and we didnt see it yet, or it's just there for clarification and not to confuse the viewer with who is who !

BTW Michael Emerson "Ben" made an interview with Star Telegram and I found this interesting part: Caution if you are spoilerphobic then dont read it, the text is in white :) :

3 What can you share about the four-episode story line that will feature Ben as a young boy?

It’s safe to say we are going to revisit Ben’s youth. With some surprising developments and some recontextualizing of events we’ve already witnessed, which is one of the things our writers have license to do. Not only can we travel in time, but we can go back and replay a scene from two years ago and not stop the scene where it stopped before, let it run on a bit, so that we can find out something that completely changes our sense of what happened in the scene we thought we already knew.

Which characters on Lost have we seen the feet of? Maybe one of them has 4 toes on each foot!

My memory is not as good as yours. :)

However the name tags are probably there so you know who's it is after washing :) We did the same with our whitecoats at work, and there's only 10 in our group :)
