They are numbers. They are important because of the varies times we have seen them and Jacob for using them. That is the answer

So the numbers themselves are red herrings. There's nothing significant about numbers. Sadly numbers have meaning, especially strings of numbers, which would lead viewers to try and figure out what they mean. That's not an unreasonable response from viewers. For the numbers to not have meaning means it's just one more empty plot device in Lost. It was never explained why he liked numbers and it was never explained why the writers chose for him to like numbers instead of something more reasonable for him to "just like".

Bad writing.

Dude, they are numbers on the show that simply carry significance to many characters.

In a 2009 interview with E!, Damon again commented on the Numbers: [3]

Here's the story with numbers. The Hanso Foundation that started the Dharma Initiative hired this guy Valenzetti to basically work on this equation to determine what was the probability of the world ending in the wake of the Cuban Missile Crisis. Valenzetti basically deduced that it was 100 percent within the next 27 years, so the Hanso Foundation started the Dharma Initiative in an effort to try to change the variables in the equation so that mankind wouldn't wipe it itself out.

Regarding Ben not going into the church:

I don't necessarily believe that it had to do with him having issues to resolve. He could be an immortal now like Alpert was, and thus he'd outlast Hurley. If what we saw of Alpert holds any precedence to Ben's situation, Ben would live a mortal lifetime and age normally once the person who gave him immortality passed on. So when Hurley was moving on, Ben was just there hanging out, and would be the person to lock up when the party was over, so to speak.

Just my baseless theory. All the same, he could just have wanted to spend time with the family he never got, like Faraday's mom did, and not move on.

The thing that nags me with people 'waiting' for others is that since it's a timeless place and pretty much abstract, there is no 'waiting' to be had. All of those people died at different times, some many years after others, but they all meet at one timeless place... so really, everyone that will move on would be there, if my thinking is correct.

Good point, but by 'waiting' I meant Alex may have not had her awakening yet.

All number correspond to Jacob's chosen ones(remaining survivors). He killed off the weaker people to find the best choices for protecting the island.

Damn.... good find.

Although I don't think that really offers much more explanation. More of a deepening of the mystery, in my opinion.

I admit I completely missed it though. I could say in my defense I watched 5 seasons in a month while I worked all day so it was really not something I paid 100% attention to, but then again the likelihood of me watching it with my full attention and seeing that is slim. I'm fairly retarded.

I think that Ben and his group knew they had to protect the Island, but they didn't know the reason, and they didn't understand the Island - but protected it anyway. This need for 'protection' was a kind of 'legend' (legend probably too strong a word )passed down from Richard and other rumours. Richard was still Jacob's #2, so why would Jacob bother talking to Ben? Ben just assumed the role for himself - which overall, was unimportant in the eyes of Jacob.

The DHarma Initiative attempted to do what every other human had tried to - understand the Island and its power - to be able to manipulate and use it for whatever purpose.

Had smokey got off the Island, then he would have destroyed humanity ( who could know how to stop the smoke ) - and maybe block the route to 'afterlife / heaven'. A battle between Good ( Jacob ) and Evil ( Smoke )

Why was Jack's son important if he wasn't real?

The way I see this is:
Jack wanted a son and he wanted a purpose - however, in Purgatory he got both of these. It was a kind of 'heaven' for him - he has what he wanted.

In the same way that in Desmond's life, he wanted to be accepted by Penny's father. In Purgatory, this was the case, he was accepted. Also, another example was Hugo - he wanted to be liked, and popular.

I have to disagree. That's not what Jack wanted.
Jack wanted to be on the island.

Jack wanted a purpose and the Island ultimately gave him that - being the Island's protector / killing smokey. However, it seemed to me, in the last few episodes involving Jack and sideways flash, Jack had more of a purpose than elsewhere AND he was far happier.

Damn, the general consensus in this thread seems to be the general consensus I'm finding all over the internet. LOST fans are split 50/50 mostly regarding who liked it and who was disappointed or confused. To anyone disappointed, I can't imagine why. I understand that a lot of us thought that in the end the story was about the sci-fi aspect of the show as opposed to the spiritual but I don't think that is a change in mindset that we have to adapt to that should make us angry as viewers. If anything, I think it should make us proud that we watched a show straight through that ultimately carried such a powerful message. It wasn't just some crazy sci-fi show. It was a show that had a story to tell.

To those confused, maybe I can help. I wrote an article on my blog called "The Significance of the Island", explaining why ultimately the "unanswered questions" that some feel were left open don't really matter anyway. Take a look here if you're interested: http://tumblr.com/x9uaebrx4

Regardless of the haters, it's sort of interesting to see everyone's individual take on the finale. Granted, it mostly had one clear message there are a lot of things that people can interpret for themselves as well.

Where did you get Jacob loved numbers?

I forget which episode and which character said so, but someone asked someone about the numbers written on the cave or something about numbers and they character said something like JACOB HAS A THING FOR NUMBERS. I'm actually not trying to be a jerk, although reading that line, I can see how you might think I am effing around. I'm not. I really can't remember anything other then someone said something like that. Can anyone help?

I remember that episode, actually. But I think it was just a statement about Jacob's personality. I don't think there was any real significance behind that fact. Ultimately, the numbers were just used to identify the candidates and those six numbers (4 8 15 16 23 42) were just the numbers of those that would be left standing at the end.

Personally, I thought the ending was fairly originally, Sure it didn't answer every question. If all questions were answered then a lot *more* people would have been disappointed. Overall, the story did have too much mythology IMO.

Still, a good ending.
