i think there was a statement by daniel in there saying "you can't change time" but it seems like by having the constant you can change the events in a timeline. in the last sequence where in his journal he writes to himself desmond is my constant, why would he ever write that in the past just randomly?

How long before some website posts a close-up of Daniel's chalkboard and explains it all to us?

What a great episode! Second only to the pilot, as far as I'm concerned. About half-way through I was concerned that they were just leading us down another random rabbit hole, then BAM, a resolution and some answers.

Great episode.
Was that an ontological paradox I saw fly by?

Momentum has been building this season.
Well worth staying with.

Looks like Ben does have someone on board the boat.

Fav. episode of this season so far, it blew my mind. My guess as to who is on this boat, Michael. He's suppose to be back this season sometime around episode 8 or something. That's my guess, anything can happen with Lost.

I'm wondering who the "captain" is that they keep referring to on the ship. My first thought was Penelope's father. We know that Penny is calling the ship, but they have been instructed not to answer her calls. It would make sense that she knows how to call the ship if it belonged to her father. All the crew seem intimidated and a bit afraid of the captain, and Penny's father is certainly powerful and intimidating.

My other thought is that Michael is the captain because he came on board and "replaced" the previous captain. If this is so, Penny's father would be elsewhere.

My favorite moment was finding out that the Black Rock was lost at sea and that the Hanso family had held the journal of the first mate in their private collection until Penny's father bought it at auction.

Agreed, I had a little chuckle at that. I wonder what the diary contains? Funny that someone else survived the island. That's probably how they found it to begin with.

Hands down the best episode in a loooong time.
This also explains why Desmond was having future visions of that hobbit guy dying over and over.
(sorry cant remember characters name  )

He wrote that down because he knows he talks to Desmond in the future so it gives him a point in both the past and future that he knows he will be around, be able to contact. Since the episode was flashbacks instead of flashforwards, Daniel has no idea if Desmond managed to survive by contacting his constant.

I'm not sure if I like this episode yet... it's still sinking in for me. We've seen Desmond time travel in a previous episode, and this skirted some of the questions but didn't really offer any great answers to the questions.

There was no changing of time. The only way to resolve the paradox is to assume time as the 4th dimension that sprung into being all at once when the universe started along with the first three (and probably more). Normally we are pushed along in the fourth dimension by some unseen force, somehow the Island and Daniel's device manage to allow our minds to move elsewhere in this 4th dimension. There is no paradox because you can't change time and it all happened at once when the universe was created, the only crappy part of that is that if it were true there is no such thing as free will. We're pushed along in the 4th dimension by an unseen force and all of our actions are predetermined and unavoidable.

Yo dude, stop bogarting that joint and pass it to me....

IMO, this is one of the better episodes in a long time.

The time travel tie-ins, the interesting resolutions using old characters and old story lines, and references to cool stuff like the Black Rock, and ships log which Hanso owned and then sold to Penny's father.

well the whole of Lost might make a lot more sense if I started smoking something....

Last night's episode is still a mixed bag for me....

It skirted a couple questions but didn't really answer them... it was just a big tease...

Standalone it was great, but in the overall story arc I'm not sure if they'll be able to give any answer good enough to not make me think of the 92+ hours spent watching/digging around the internet on this show was worth it.

I definitely enjoyed the episode, and it was nice that they finally had a "happy ending" of sorts with Desmond talking to Penny. I kind of figured that something would happen or we'd have to wait until next week.

The idea that there's some sort of "time lag" between the island and the real world is still perplexing to me. If time passes more quickly on the island, as appears to be the case, then have they really only been on the island a matter of days?

Pass that joint.

I find that Lost is moving to fast now, it started great then things got very slow and now it seems that they are trying to catch up, i just hope they do not miss a lot of what they wanted us to see.

We know that Penny is calling the ship, but they have been instructed not to answer her calls.
When Charlie talked to Penny from the underwater hatch, didn't she not know what boat Charlie was talking about?

Maybe my memory is confused because I travel in time so much.

Just had this discussion with a friend, and I think time passes more slowly on the island...

The lag you see is the Island "catching up" to the outside world.

When Jack called the boat and the copter had been gone for a lot longer than it should have taken, they needed the island to catch up to the day when the copter landed.

Effectively on the island you can make a phone call to the past... (somehow radio communication happens in real time).

Time passing faster on the outside world is the only way I can see for Kate to have Aaron without a lot of questions as to how a non-pregnant woman, could be on an island for only a few months and leave with a 3-4 month old baby.

I don't think you're confused. Although perhaps since Charlie talked to her while still within the Island's influence, perhaps the boat hadn't been sent yet.

Not sure I understand that. So time moves in "spurts" on the island, where occasionally it will catch up with the outside world? How would that work? Is it like that guy who's always driving in front of me, speeding up, slowing down, speeding up, slowing down...?

I'm still trying to wrap my head around it a bit...

it's not really spurts, and a lot of it has to do with how and where you pass through the barrier/rift/whatever you have to get through to get outside....

there are some paths that can get you to the island on the same day you left... but once there time starts moving more slowly for you... so the 40 minute copter trip had them pass through the barrier and catch up to the outside world but it was 2 days later....

The island had to wait 2 days to make their phone call because their friends weren't there yet....

but the more I think about it the more I realize I have no eff'n clue what's going on....

I think we need Torchwood and the Doctor to investigate....

time cant be that much different, they have been on the island for about 90 days, they think, and last nights episode was december 24th 2004, 95 days from when they crashed, roughly, so its a real mystery what is really going on

Starting tonight is a new ABC show by J.J. Abrams, creator of Alias (also an ABC show).

It's called "Lost" and is billed as an action-packed adventure about 48 survivors of an airplane crash on a Pacific island. .......

.....No Tom Hanks, no Wilson the volleyball (here's why), and no Gilligan, Ginger, and Maryanne. But maybe it'll turn out to be a good show anyway.

Well, I think it has turned out to be a good show!

And this recent episode has my mind in a twist. The time dilation is quite fascinating. What did Dharma know about it? Did that machine on the Island have something to do with causing the 2 day variance?

I think time moves at the same speed on the island, its just two days behind.

Then why a 30 minute delay on the projectile the ship shot to Daniel...

Somehow I think the amount of dilation has everything to do with the path you take to get on/off the island... some paths lead to a world 30 minutes off, some 2 days, some weeks/months/years off...
