They need to bring the ruckus if they want to sell these boxes in a recession!
actually if you look at the numbers, Apple has been doing just fine with no blu-ray, no matte screen etc. in this recession.
Just like the iPod event earlier in the month, wouldn't Apple deem this worthy of another event? Especially if the rumors are to be believed of the iMacs are getting a new/refreshed form factor...
so if there's been no announcement which would happen if there is to be something happening next week (they wouldn't ship before the change so next tuesday is most likely if something is to go out on the 9th), that would be a sign that this is likely not some giant game changing thing. or Apple is changing the game and going to do the announcement all online with no press on site. but I doubt that. Steve does love to make those Keynote keynotes.
When I saw the rumors for low stock of the low end, I figured they would probably drop the low-end, make the high-end the price of the low-end, and add a new higher model to the line.
SOP for them.
But that would not reduce the time to ship the low-end ones; they would change it to the higher model and no delays in ship times. So seems like my theory was wrong. What do others think?
I think you aren't thinking it through.
lets say you are right. the current low end mac mini is going away and the current high end will get a price cut (perhaps some tweaking) and a new big brother.
the machine probably wasn't in stock to be shipped but Apple doesn't want to trump any change by shipping the high with a price change. especially since they could send an email right after the change occurs and maybe the buyer would jump up to the high end one at a few bucks more and some free expedited shipping for 'his trouble'
What's the shortest lead time for an Apple announcement? Didn't they have one with less than a week once?
for a different department sure.
but it does bring up the notion that this is not a remodel but just some refinements and thus why make the press travel again so soon (they are loathe to put too much in one announcement for fear of overload by the public and the retail staff who have to remember all the new details, deal with crowds and calls etc)
And if its a quiet update, its not going to be anything major... and if its nothing major, theres going to be a lot of disappointed posters on this forum.
Isn't that a standard modus operandi around here:
(a) Chorus of unrealistic and far-fetched expectations from overzealous Apple fanboys (and girls)
(b) Apple announces a round of incremental updates that are no where near "a"
(c) Chorus of overzealous Apple fanboys (and girls) crying dissapointment and disbelief
(d) Repeat "a" in 4-6 months time
what they said.
Apple is not one to toss in everything and the kitchen sink or to do what anyone else demands they do (unless it is a legal issue) or do what everyone else has done. they do things when they want and what they want.
I love Apple dearly and they do make the products I buy and use and will continue to do so, but lets be real. They are most amazing not for their products but for the way they can lead the pack rather than follow it.
take this blu-ray thing. licensing and such was for a long time as jobs put it 'a bag of hurt' so they went and looked an what other choices there are. and started with downloads, itunes extras, hopefully in the near future real 1080 HD, bootable SD and so on. They could continue all of this and skip right over blu-ray and folks will think they are utterly amazing. Steve Jobs could polish the turd that is no internal blu-ray in Macs and be seen as a god. that's the real power of Apple.
that and watching the naysayers call the lack of anything as the doom of the company but then the stock goes up another $20 as machines fly out of the stores.
heck i'm buying a new imac for my nephews and I'm only waiting cause I"m loathe to buy something and then have something more cost effective come out two weeks later. but even if it's just a slight speed bump, a little more hard drive etc. i'm still buying it.
But how the hell can the shops make money now if a customer comes in and wants to buy something that is not there? The stores will lose a lot of this - and it must surely mean that an update is here soon, for it can not take too long until the new update is here.
the stores with only 1 or 2 of each model probably don't sell that many imacs at a time anyway. I work on a mall and have to cross by the loading docks to get from employee parking and the Apple stores gets deliveries 6 days a week. who is to say that they aren't getting a replacement for each machine sold so they keep that 1-2 pretty much in stock until the big day.
