After 2 years with the M1 and 512 with 8mgs, I will be updating for sure. I love the Air but continue to struggle with ram and need to be able to do all that I need to do. Looking forward to the "add to bag" not just "check the price" so that we can start with the "mine is shipped, mine is sitting, mine is lost" threads.

I don't know yet. Current M1 Air is more than what I need and I rarely even use it. But I'm a sucker for having the most recent model computers. :)
I'm just worried if new design is much fatter than it appears on the specs. I've seen some videos and next to M2 Pro it looks almost as thick. Also I find Pro 14.2" looks a bit too fat for my taste.
Also not sure about many things in M2 Air, like speakers, I don't see any openings for them on the top side, so hopefully they don't sound muffled when placing computer on your lap or other soft surface.
Then considering also structure is it is more or less solid than M1 Air because I find M1 is rather flexible, I mean I avoid holding it on the thin front side when the lid is open as it feels like it is bending.

That seems odd. my late 2020 purchased M1 Air is not feeling flexible at all its solid

Way I see it, M2 MBA isn't fast enough to make a difference since, for example, Shadow of the Tomb Raider goes from unplayable 20fps at 1080p ultra on M1 to estimated 27fps (+35%) on M2 which is still well below desirable 60fps but with exorbitant price increase that's more than gaming laptops, potential impact to battery life, addition of ugly notch and I make it a habit not to repurchase the same semiconductor node.

Only features of interest are MagSafe since it solves the issue of doing USB MacOS restore which requires plugging in power but the USB-C ports are too close for both power and my USB-C memory stick and maybe 1080p webcam if it makes a difference but still doesn't justify price increase.

If Apple had also given 3nm and made performance more like M1 Pro 10CPU 14GPU then it would justify the price increase. Maybe next time with M3.

Why do you think Apple is going to stop offering OS updates to the M1 Air in two years???
During the intel transition, the first gen with core Duo chips were only supported through Snow Leopard, only two OSes from Tiger. Apple have done something like that before.

I will upgrade right away if they ever make a 15 inch version of the redesign. Other than that, I'm keeping my M1 MBA for a long time.
And your wish may come true as soon as next spring according to todays rumours. I'm totally with you on this one.

I'll only upgrade for a 15" MBA. The .3" difference in size and 18% better performance in negligible and will be imperceptible in majority of tasks. And I'm sorry, still hate that notch. I realize the 15" will have it but at least it has a much larger screen to make up for having it.

Until then, I love the M1 MBA. Does everything I need without breaking a sweat and stays cool to the touch. Love the wedge design as it doesn't hurt my wrists typing.

I bought and returned the 2020 MB Air because the 400 nits wasn’t bright enough for me. The 2022 Air has 500 nits, a welcomed improvement.
You'll be surprised how little a difference of 100 nits is to the eye. And the M1 Air is measured at around 425nits on some samples so difference is even less. Just my IMO. I'm curious to see screen measurements of the M2 though. The M1 13" MBP didn't hit 500 nits in the reviews I saw (I think around 475 nits).

Or it may never come true. Remember two things:
  • Apple routinely tests devices that never make it to market.
  • Apple routinely releases specs on devices to sniff out leakers.
Trying to maintain the balance here on not getting expectations too high only for them to be shattered as several times Apple has done.

My M1 is perfectly fine, but there are features on the M2 that really appeal to me, so I'll take the plunge. I don’t really need it, but hey, sometimes we go to such lengths to justify stuff. Truth is I want it so I’m buying it lol, even if it doesn’t make much sense.

Only reason I am considering it is because I have only 8gb ram, though in both work and leisure I have not felt it to be that limiting (I am always in the 7gb range at work with about 1gb in swap)

But for what it offers, I would rather hold off until the M3 chips before upgrading.

Again it does (imo)

Thinner and wedged = my wrists aren’t feeling the sharp edge the 13” MBP I do when it’s on a desk

But weight is more important than thinness overall I do agree in terms of priority
I often see this (the wrists resting on the sharp-or-otherwise edge of the laptop / whether it's a good thing or not): personally, I type with my hands/wrists not resting on anything - all the strain taken up by my upper arms, shoulders and neck - so I don't experience any wrist pain / comfort phenonemens. I just get neck/shoulder/upper/arm/back pain :)

I have a 2020 MBA i3, so very tempted to move to the M2, since there are starting to be more MacOS features limited to the M processors. But, if I had the 2020 MBA M1, I would probably wait a few years before updating.

Yes, I am. Only because 8GB of RAM was not enough.

The same goes for 256GB storage, Time Machine and “other” kept taking up the most space and absolutely would not make room automatically as it should.

This resulted in iCloud Drive behaving horribly with being stuck trying to download and upload content in the background.

Then when I add/remove/manage files on iCloud Drive, it won’t sync up while the other progress is still happening, essentially breaking iCloud Drive for me.

Oh, and I hated files getting inconveniently removed as a local download, because of Time Machine or iCloud Drive trying to sync but is stuck.

Also that new design is beautiful.

MagSafe will be easier to charge my MacBook Air while it is in my backpack at home without having to find the port.
