I can't wrap around my head why people are judging the display based on a video recording. There's no way to tell how good the display is from that video, the black will appear pitch black because the exposure is set to automatic (in other words, the video shows the display dimmer than it really is), when I take pictures or videos of my ISP monitor it looks the same way, with pitch blacks but it's neither miniLED or OLED.

If you match the exposure and make sure the black levels in the video appear as they are in real life, then you can go ahead and judge the blacks and how deep they are, or how serious the blooming effect it.
sure judging the video isn't 100% fair but it's the best we can do for now and even if it's not perfectly set up you can still easily see the blooming.

Meanwhile back at the ranch my iPad order status hasn’t budged a pixel. Although it does appear in my Apple Store App again…

All these clips really do are showing us how good our own displays we are watching them on is, lol. 😋 We cannot really gauge how great the screen is without having it in front of our eyes.
Hah! I posted almost the exact same thing a few seconds after you did. Can't seem to delete the post...

example. screenshot of the reddit guys video and a photo i just took of my OLED TV (with iPhone 12 Pro Max). i was going to highlight it but it's clear as day. the mini led is glowing up pixels that are meant to be dark. the OLED is only lighting up the bottle itself.

Yep these new iPads Pros are a no-brainer upgrade for pretty much everyone. Even if you bought the 2020 version, you're going to want in on these new models.

Two month lead times on new orders now. Not bad for a product I was recently told on here wouldn't be in high demand, and there would be plenty of stock to go around. :D

A no-brainer upgrade? Possibly for a 12” iPad, but if you already own an 11” iPP (2018 or 2020), you are not really getting much, are you? Sure, an M1, 5G and more RAM, so what? Your Pages app will open a fraction of a millisecond faster? Most people here are into new tech, so as soon as OLED and mini-LED make their way into smaller iPads, I can bet they will want to try it out for themselves.

Lol that’s a really bad comparison. It makes no sense what you did here.
All we can do is wait to have a look at it yourself with your own eyes without the distortion a camera brings.

How did you account for the compression of YouTube and the added glare by the phone camera the user shot this on?

What? The new iPad especially the 12.9” is a huge leap. What other company is shipping a tablet with a processor that out performs the current 16 inch MacBook Pro? Also;
1. Mini LED screen
2. 5G
3. Wi-Fi 6
3.Thunderbolt 3 (up to 40Gb/s)
4. New and better front facing cameras than ALL current macs’s and previous generation iPads
5. M1 first 5nm processor that is 50% faster than the previous generation, sips power.
6. More RAM
7. Faster and larger storage options.

What exactly should they have done to impress you?
The only new improvement over prior model that is noticeable to the user, is the screen.

The screen IS a large improvement and the only reason I buy IPad pros. But it’s only an incremental upgrade over prior outside of that, and hardly enough to induce such wasteful consumerism as ditching year old iPads for this.

iPad Pro 2021 upgrade is more interesting than 2020 version
- much bigger performance jump with M1 than A12X to Z
- Mini LED and hdr
- better front camera and center stage
- thunderbolt / faster storage

granted on the 11” it’s pretty incremental. And I fully agree on the watch series 6. Same with the new Apple TV Btw. Thing is at some point you really can’t make huge leaps forward anymore. I feel the iPhone is in that situation too.

Current “revolutions“ are more on the internals with the silicon switch than with the look and feel of the devices.
and on the software side (I hope)
Even with the 12.9" model, the daily usage difference from the current 2020 model is not going to huge. Of course there is the much nicer display and that is about it for your average day to day user, unless said user only takes pictures with the iPad.

People are obsessing over the OLED black levels too much. For one: the XDR has MUCH higher typical brightness and MUCH higher peak brightness. The typical brightness will be 400-500 nits more than it would've been on an OLED iPad and the peak brightness probably about double of what an OLED would've been. What does that mean in practice? HDR movies and tv shows will look much more poppy and impressive on this display than they ever would've on an OLED. Blooming is an acceptable downside , MiniLED is still preferable over OLED for an iPad. Yes, for the living room an OLED might be better where you will watch movies at night with a dimmed room. However an iPad also needs to be able to provide a stunning HDR picture during the daytime, maybe even outside on the beach - or anywhere really. OLED would never be able to do that currently.

Secondly: OLED might not technically have blooming, but you WILL experience blooming even on OLED tv's in real life. Why? It's an optical illusion, but basically your eyes/brain will imagine blooming around bright white objects. If you have an OLED at home just try it; set a completely black background with only a white apple logo in the middle. The apple logo will appear to have a white glow around it; even though it doesn't if you block off part of the picture or pixel peep.

Bloom is gonna happen people; even on OLED; you can blame your eyes for that one.

my suspicion is right that you have a 12.9" pre ordered

i already said i know it's not a 100% fair comparison but c'mon you're in denial. that image clearly shows the blooming. you'll see it when you turn it on so not really gonna argue with you about it :)

No, you still don't get the point. Trying to refer to my pre-order... low bro

But that just shows your ignorance.

You have clearly no experience with HDR. Maybe the brightness of the iPad is SO much higher than your Samdung TV. That way the light parts get over saturated within the camera.

What I am saying is that you can only judge it by yourself en your own eyes. If you try to record it you dont know the circumstances at all. Get your head out of the sand mate. Don't blame me.

Even though I am jealous, I am holding out for the 14-inch MacBook Pro/16-inch MacBook that are supposedly rumored to have the same display tech launching later this year...

macOS is just so much more useful and versatile than iPadOS at this stage...
Yeah I think at this point iPadOS is a slightly more functional iOS, but quite far away from the multitasking of macOS. But, iPadOS, for my usage is just about all I need in a computer and much as I love my M1 Air, were it not for school, I’d probably not own a macOS device.

I completely agree. i just find my iPad the more enjoyable device to use. and I feel the iPad (pro) is the platform that will evolve the most over the next few years in terms of interesting software.

That mini LED display looks like it matches if not exceeds OLED.

It's impressive, but let's not get crazy. There's still a visible halo blooming around everything. You'll only ever match, never exceed, an OLED once there's infinite contrast like an OLED has.
