Apple has traditionally called the better chips "X", as in A12X vs A12 wherein the A12X was a substantial increase in power and capability. Maybe calling the new chips M1 Pro and/or M1 Max is an attempt to differentiate them from the M1 but cover their butts when we discover they are not substantial increases in power or capability but just typical incremental Apple updates. A name is just a name, and any decent marketing firm will tell you to choose a name that makes customers feel like they are getting a lot more than they really are. Time will tell. Maybe we will get greaty improved processors, or maybe Apple will be Apple and we won't...

Intel’s nomenclature is not consumer-friendly at all. No average consumer will know what’s the difference between i9 ABC and i9 XYZ. What consumers will understand is Pro is better than base.
Well is Pro better than Max? Or is Max better than Pro? You would think Pro would mean more "Professional". So even that naming is confusing. And what is better than Max?

You are not understanding my post AT ALL. What you say is EXACTLY WHAT I am saying. Apple doesn't need to add to confusion. Users won't need to know if Pro is better than Max or if Max is better than Pro. Just say:

M1 8 Core CPU 8 Core GPU
M1 16 Core CPU 12 Core GPU

Hmmmm... Which one is better? The bigger numbers!

Instead of saying M1 Pro and M1 Max.

Mmmmm1?

I will be furiously hitting buy on a Mac Mini Pro before the words are fully out of their mouths.

I think Pro and Max naming make more sense and it will be easier for Apple to provide upgrades - M1 will be reserved for non-pro machines and any M1 Pro and Max will end up in MBPs or new 30" iMac and Max might end up in Mac Pro.
then when they are ready for refresh, they can change from M1 to M2 and continue following the same pattern.

iPhone 13, iPhone 13 Pro, iPhone 13 Pro Max

Macbook
Macbook Pro
Macbook Pro Max?

Would Apple stick with that naming convention? Or could it be just the naming convention for the processor?
I could see that, but for the processors that would translate to M1 Pro and M1 Pro Max, which would make more sense to me than the M1 Pro and M1 Max names mentioned here.

I’m more interested in the GPU performance of the new chips than I am in the processor. Processor technology right now is outpacing software, so few applications take full advantage of modern processors. But the M1 is behind on modern GPU performance. If they can get much improved GPU performance new Macs could be a game changer, especially for gaming, and gaming companies may finally take Macs seriously.

I am digging the poly-adjective suffix game Apple evolved with the phones. Applying the same to the laptop line makes perfect marketing sense. A "Pro Max" and/or a Pro Max Extreme" carves out a nice niche from Razer and Dell for gaming on M-based technology. Makes sense to me since Intel "gaming" laptops have been Hackintoshed to run Pro apps. Another way to kick Intel to the curb on mobile workstations and gaming rigs.

Maybe the 14” will be called the MacBook Pro and the 16” will be called the MacBook Max 🤔
Good point. Actually based on current rumors the 14'' and 16'' will be basically the same except for the screen size. Similar to iPhone Pro/Pro Max differentiate (usually, forgot 12) only in screen size, I really think that 16'' can be called MacBook Pro Max.

So are we expecting both of them to offer same exact performance?

M1 Pro and M1 Max sound awful for chip names. If true it sounds like they let the same idiot who thought ‘The New iPad’ was a better name than iPad 3.
I’d much rather it be M1, M1x and M1z based of the A14. Then future models based off A15 be M2, M2x and M2z .
