Apple has traditionally called the better chips "X", as in A12X vs A12 wherein the A12X was a substantial increase in power and capability. Maybe calling the new chips M1 Pro and/or M1 Max is an attempt to differentiate them from the M1 but cover their butts when we discover they are not substantial increases in power or capability but just typical incremental Apple updates. A name is just a name, and any decent marketing firm will tell you to choose a name that makes customers feel like they are getting a lot more than they really are. Time will tell.
