So are we expecting both of them to offer same exact performance?
At least for what's rumored, they have exactly the same CPU and GPU (or at least can be selected to the same configuration of cores).
I think that if there will be any difference beyond screen size (which I doubt), it will be 120Hz and/or mini-LED (like M1 iPad Pro).

As for performance, maybe (just maybe) 16'' will have better cooling than 14''. But I personally think their cooling system will end up being the same.

Yep, although I wouldn’t be surprised in the slightest if they reserve the option for the 32 core GPU for the 16 inch.
But if they don’t, and you’re able to make the exact same upgrades on both machines, even better.
A 14 inch MacBook Pro powered by a 32 core Apple GPU and a 10 core Apple CPU with eight performance cores sounds like an absolute beast of a machine.

The M1 iPad Pro had proven that there must be something to compromise... 32c reserve is one, I also seriously doubt if 120Hz will come to both models.

I can’t wait! It’s such a solid upgrade.

My guess is the max will just have the better gpu option.

Long term though, there's no doubt that Apple will be aiming towards more cores for the iMac and Mac Pro. It would be pretty awesome if we saw an even crazier cpu option with more cores.

Most likely:
M1: 4 performance cores, 4 efficiency cores. Same for M2 later but faster.
M1 Pro: 8 performance cores, 2 efficiency cores
M1 Max: Same as pro but with more gpu cores

Would be awesome:
M1: 4 performance cores, 4 efficiency cores. Same for M2 later but faster.
M1 Pro: 8 performance cores, 2 efficiency cores
M1 Max: 12 performance cores, 4 efficiency cores or similar, probably would be re-used in iMacs later since they will have a larger thermal window. On a 14/16" though they might need to keep frequencies down on something like this.

Overall I'm a little worried that these higher powered Mx chips will lose the coolness of the M1 that makes it so appealing for laptops. They almost certainly will be adding 10-20w more power draw.

I'm posted it a million times before but I'm also impatiently waiting to see if Apple supports wi-fi 6e (6ghz) or AV1 hardware decoding in these chips.

M1 Pro and M1 Max sound awful for chip names. If true it sounds like they let the same idiot who thought ‘The New iPad’ was a better name than iPad 3.
I’d much rather it be M1, M1x and M1z based of the A14. Then future models based off A15 be M2, M2x and M2z .
I don’t know, “that idiot” Who named the third generation iPad turned out to be correct, seeing as all of the current iPads, andall of the current Macs don’t have clunky numbers in their name.
We’re not on the MacBook Pro 14 S, or the iPad mini six, even though some people still call it that.
We’re just on the new MacBook Pro, or the new MacBook Air, or the new iPad mini.
Looks a lot better to me, I wish they would do it with everything.
Instead of the iPhone 17 promax, it’s just the new iPhone Pro that comes in two different sizes.

So A14 based confirmed? I guess the idea they’d skip to an A15 based M2 Pro was a bit of a stretch given the development timeline of these things. I guess with these we will either see Firestorm actually pushed to its thermal and clock limits, or maybe an entirely new core design on the same architecture?

This also probably sinks the idea of a quiet M2 update to the Air, Pro and mini alongside the new machines but that was also always quite unlikely.

Yeah, but the difference is AirPods Max are an entirely different product from AirPods Pro, not just a bigger version.
Not really.
AirPods Pro are headphones that let you listen to music.
AirPods max are headphones that let you listen to music that sound better than the AirPods Pro.

Assuming 12P+4E will be 3x power of M1, the MBP clearly does not have enough cooling (current cooling can barely handle 100W, but M1 CPU x3 will match 45-50W, let alone the hungry 32c GPU).
I honestly think that iMac 30'' and Mac Pro can have >8P+2E chip (maybe M1 Pro Max or M1 Extreme?) like 12P+4E, 16P+4E, or even more P cores. Also, 64c or even 128c GPU can be anticipated in a large cooling enclave like iMac.

The AirPods Max sounds like the headphone version of the AirPods Pro. So the “Max“ is the right label for it.

So A14 based confirmed?

Nothing is confirmed. Not to mention that using vanilla A14 cores a year after thei release sounds a bit… odd, especially since they already have a new architecture that is obviously targeting more intense workloads (more cache etc.) and higher clocks, and of course a redesigned display engine that is likely needed for the pro macs.

That’s going to be in 2022 I guess. 2nd year transition. Maybe the MacBook Air in 2022 will carry them?
Sounds about right
The current rumor is that the M2 will keep the same four efficiency/four performance core design of the current M1, but will obviously be based on a newer architecture, and will be upgrading the GPU to options of eight and 10 cores instead of the current seven and eight.

Same. I don’t get why the M1 Pro and M1 Max should have less efficiency cores than the M1. Is the big selling feature not the battery life and coolness?

Okay, they're not as different as headphones vs. toasters, but they use an entirely different build. They're not AirPods Pro scaled up, like the Pro Max phones are.
Well yes, but still.
AirPods max are bigger, thicker, better, heavier, and over twice as expensive as the AirPods Pro.
Same idea here, with an obviously different execution

All I want is a version I can get at an Apple store that is not a stripped down wimp (16GB Ram 1TB SSD) instead of needing to customize and wait for China to make it.

I don't know either. Original speculations are 8P+4E and 12P+4E builds, but Mark Gurman says it will be 8P+2E several months ago and suddenly everyone changed their mind.

I agree. I'm saying it wouldn't make sense to call them "Pro Max" because they are not bigger AirPods Pro, they're a different product. But yeah I'm probably trying to apply too much logic to what are just marketing terms.

For chips I don't know, because obviously we're not talking about physical size here. The AirPods Max happen to be bigger than the AirPods Pro, but the important thing is that they're in a higher tier, they're "maxed out". The M1 Max will be "maxed out" and that's what will matter.

So A14 based confirmed?

Looks increasingly likely. Sigh.

I guess the idea they’d skip to an A15 based M2 Pro was a bit of a stretch given the development timeline of these things.

As a one-off, OK, but I sure hope this doesn't mean we'll see the M2 in spring, the A16 in September, and then the A15-derived M2X in fall.

I guess one could argue this is how it works with Intel as well (especially on their Xeon products), but, bummer.

I guess with these we will either see Firestorm actually pushed to its thermal and clock limits, or maybe an entirely new core design on the same architecture?

If it's called M1 Pro, surely that means Firestorm/Icestorm. We'll likely see a lot more cores, and maybe a slight clock increase (3.5 GHz?). Bonus points if they add some features, like support for a third monitor or eGPU.

This also probably sinks the idea of a quiet M2 update to the Air, Pro and mini alongside the new machines but that was also always quite unlikely.

I think the rumor of an M2 Air in spring, with a new design, makes more sense now. At that point, I expect the M1 Air to continue to sell, at $200 off.
