I had this problem with HDR content from the TV app, so it's not just YouTube. @jclo I read through the error message on reboot and it actually said there was a power draw issue, funnily enough my crash happened right after a transition to a bright scene in a movie... like the system couldn't sustain enough juice for that HDR light burst.

My system was fully charged, plugged into the 140W adapter, and a thunderbolt dock.

Because it is not happening to all machines, how can you conclude it is software instead of hardware?
Eh, software crash is also not happening to all machines so how can you conclude it is hardware instead of software?

FYI, If it happens only on YouTube and not affecting any other HDR contents then it's definitely software. This issue is sounding 95% like software related.

The rush to release an “new” os every year is killing the innovation and the stability. I only “update” (yes, in quotes), after the x.1 or x.2 or versions are released. Apple is worst than Microsoft these days about stability. And I have been using a Mac happily since 2009, but since 2 years ago it has been a dissaster. How come Tim does not uses a Mac or an iPhone?.

have you tried watching the HDR video in default view and while the video is running, scroll through the comments with various speeds with your trackpad?

I've tried this multiple times while also going full screen back to the default view and it absolutely does not crash my 16" M1 Pro.

It also crashes if I tried to download multiple apps while browsing AppStore, and I can replicate it even in safe mode

Tried it multiple times in Chrome on my 1M Pro (10/16) 14" and couldn't replicate it.

Side note, I do love watching these 4K videos. Beautiful on this screen.

Exchange hardware because software crashes... ?
It almost like people who think this aren't "pros" at all ha. Oh man, my Final Cut keeps crashing so I can't make my sweet tik tok vids...better return this **** hardware.

Future PSA; for all those with YouTube issues I found the fix! Buy an M1 MacBook Air but only from the refurbised store.

@TooManyNotes found the problem is related to using Separate tabs in Safari. I also found going back to Compact tabs stopped the crashing.

Interesting.. this was also reported with Chrome users as well.. is there an equivalent for that? If so, then this actually would rule out the OS as being any part of the problem.

BL.

16" M1 Max (10-core CPU/32-core GPU/64GB/4TB). No issues here.

It'll prolly be until .3 before the true ins and outs of these m1pro/max machines are ironed out
Even though I typically do not have notable problems with updates/upgrades, my plan this year is indeed to wait for the .2 maybe .3 updates of each OS. I hate to say it, but I do think Apple is slipping, not performing sufficient testing in order to hit launch schedules/deadlines.

I'll make sure to get the 32GB/64GB model!
it's happening on my 16 Max 32gb too so it's not

Hey, I just tried the compact tab thing you suggested and it worked. I've been scrolling with the HDR video playing for 5 minutes and nothing happened. But as soon as I switched back to Separate tabs, and started scrolling, it instantly locks and restarts.... so weird. I wonder what that compact tab layout is bypassing...

Reason #456,834,930 why Craig Federighi needs to be shown the door. Every day there's some new glitch, some new **** up, and it's been happening every day and every iOS/MacOS release since he was put in charge

I think I discovered the solution, at least for Safari. Go into Safari preferences and change the tab mode to 'Compact.' My computer stopped crashing once I tried this.
