Makes one wonder just how last minute the decision to launch the M3 models was made.
This actually makes me think the opposite. Since some were preloaded with Ventura, I get the sense they were supposed to launch earlier and were delayed.

To your point, if they were ready early on but delayed, there was a sudden decision to launch them before Sonoma was ready anyway.

Whether there are issues with Sonoma itself that is causing a delay or the launch of the M3 models was in limbo for business reasons is up for debate I guess.

Do these have a manufacturing date like my iPhone 15 Pro Max does? My phone was August. These MacBook pros were probably sitting a few months.

They do. But unlike the latest iPhones, which users are forced to get with iOS 17 and have no option of using 16 if they want, these Macs shipped with Ventura.

So users will always be able to downgrade to this version in case Sonoma has issues with software they need (incompatibility or bugs affecting their workflow).

Download the full installer. Also, given that these macs were ready from summer time, this might explain why no thunderbolt 5. Thunderbolt 5 was announced in September... Hopefully m4 comes with TB5! I'm patiently waiting.
Unless you’re on an intel machine, or need bleeding edge Or need an incremental performance bump, there’s little reason to upgrade from an m1 or m2. That’s especially true for the pro cpu.

The most likely reason is that they were supposed to drop at WWDC '23. Not sure why Apple delayed them but it could because the Macbook Air is not ready. Not sure why it is taking them longer to qualify it but that seems to be the most likely reason. The original intent was probably to release the M3 base in June and the M3 Max/Pro in October.

Indeed. Apple silicon is insanely great. That’s why, for me, TB5 arrival is when I will upgrade. Until then, I’ll enjoy my M1 Max.

My new iMac BTO configuration just arrived Was in China 2 days ago so I’m assuming it was just assembled and was preloaded with Ventura 13.5. Updating to Sonoma manually now. The whole process is pretty quick though.

Wonder if there was dust on the new one just sitting there. :)
Like a car without an oil. Whoops.

Apple's new entry-level 14-inch MacBook Pro with the standard M3 chip began arriving to customers over the past day, and some early adopters have discovered that the laptop cannot currently be updated to macOS Sonoma over the air.

As noted by @aaronp613 on X, at least some 14-inch MacBook Pro models with the M3 chip shipped with an unreleased build of macOS Ventura 13.5 installed. When users attempt to update to macOS Sonoma in the System Settings app, macOS Ventura 13.5 is listed as the latest version available instead of macOS Sonoma 14.1.

One user who experienced this issue is Daniel Rotar, host of the YouTube channel ZONEofTECH, according to a post he shared on X today. Additional users across X and the MacRumors Forums have mentioned the issue.

Given that macOS Ventura 13.5 was released in July, it seems that Apple began stockpiling the 14-inch MacBook Pro with the M3 chip several months ago.

It's unclear when Apple will address this problem, but in the meantime, software researcher Nicolás Álvarez said that affected users can download the Install Assistant for the M3-compatible version of macOS Sonoma 14.1 and manually install the update. We'll update this story as additional information becomes available.

Update: As noted by 9to5Mac, this issue appears to affect the new iMac with the M3 chip as well.

Looks like the M3 Pro can't find public or dev Sonoma 14.2 beta over air right now, either. :-/

I'd guess that this has something to do with all the computers that have been bricked by the Sonoma update. This was one place Apple could stop the updates without admitting the problem and pulling it for everyone (which it's too late for anyway).

All the? Is it that widespread? I missed that news.
