This is great! As someone who likes to rehab retro Macs and PCs, this will just make it even easier to stuff modern parts into them. Maybe for my next project I can mash one of these into an Appple //c...

Yep, me too!

I hope it comes in colors.

Not happening. Mac Minis make up 1% of their sales, most people have moved to laptops. They aren't gonna bother having various colors, it's gonna be 1 silver brick and you're gonna like it

I would say long over due, but in 'astronomical' terms.

The challenge will be fan noise of course. The present Mini is great this way with the big fan. I'm pretty sure they will get it right, but YNK. The iFixit will be fun with this one.

Can‘t the people who have been asking for a 27’ iMac just buy this thing with a paired studio display? It’s the same thing

The people who have been asking for a 27’ iMac can. The people who have been asking for a 32’ iMac cannot.

I imagine it won't be too dissimilar to the new era mini PC's / NUCS on Amazon. I think it's a great idea as it makes for easier mounting to the backs of monitors. My suspicion is that it will use an external power supply, too. Heck, if it's USB-C powered, it could get power from the monitor itself. Off-brand OEM's will soon use LG's new 32 inch 4k OLED, so it's conceivable that this plus one of those could be the 240hz OLED iMac Pro we all wanted.

Active cooling?

That is the big question.

The M2 Pro Mini already gets a little hot….
Yeah but the M3 Pro SoC is cooler because has more efficiency cores and less performance cores. If they keep this structure, plus the efficiency coming from the new N3E process used on the M4, the M4 Pro could fit perfectly on a thinner and smaller chasis without thermal constraints.

I have a NUC WS and the fan goes (went) berserk. So.... It's now in a fanless Akasa Turing case, which is great btw.

Indeed, even if it’s just in silver I’m probably gonna love it.

However, according to that graph, iMac represents just 4% of Mac sales and… oh, they come in colors!

Maybe they want to boost Mac mini sales…

Smart move integrating product components. I imagine the redesign stems from the removal of the internal power supply unit while utilizing the iMac's external power supply brick with ethernet. I just hope they keep good amount of Thunderbolt ports on the device.
