I still don't understand the point of having both mini-DVI and Mini DisplayPort.

I mean, I really, really, want the dual-headed video card; I think that's a must, but why both technologies, especially when Apple says they are moving toward using only Mini DisplayPort? Both ports just leads to more confusion, and more of those stupid adaptors.

Many times I just wish Apple would add an extra micron or two and give us full sized video ports. I'm tired of paying $20-30 for a fragile adaptor that breaks after a year or less.

Because the mini is the "switcher" product. Not many people are going to happen to have a miniDP capable display laying around until it is better established.

I totally agree with you there, and they could kick out the mini-DVI with something more useful like more FireWire ports.

Considering you're not a newbie probably means you visit this site decently often so there is no way you didn't know about this update.

And if you didn't...owned. You still have a great machine though.

Yeah, I did. I was simply impatient. You're right. It's still a GORGEOUS machine -- I still sit there and stare at it sometimes =)

I dont seem to recall them saying this. What I DO remember steve saying was "we are going to include these with every mac product from now on"......

eh they might in this economy. (although I think it's unlikely that the Mac Pro will be updated tomorrow)

PS: anyone have any idea when the Final Cut Suite, Final Cut Express, Logic, and Aperture will be updated? There hasn't been a good Pro app update in forever!

Regarding FCS specifically, I'd put my bet on NAB 2009.

I don't expect them to attend, however, that doesn't preclude them from making associated announcements.

FCE, Logic, Aperture? Anyone's guess. Aperture? PMA 2009? (June).

Yes, but I have a top of the line MacBook Pro, and I don't have a Mini DisplayPort capable display. That's why Apple sells those confounded adaptors.

Besides, there's not a single display that uses "mini-DVI", either, at least not any popular ones. It seems that it's (if not Apple invented) a standard used only in space limited situations like notebooks.

Of course I don't have the exact quote, but the implication and general consensus from Steve's statement was that Apple was going to use Mini DisplayPort exclusively...

If you bought it from Best Buy you have 14 days to return it...if not then your in the dark.

I'll be staying up till 12, just to see the store go down. Then I'll wake up with my card in hand :D

I don't really know how you came to that conclusion, i just re watched the announcement and it was pretty much what I said earlier. No exclusivity mentioned.

Just purchased

I just picked up an iMac last saturday in an apple store, not even considering the fact that they should have new iMacs soon. Will I be able to exchange up w/o any problems? I'm still within my 14 days...

Well Apple never said they were moving toward being exclusively USB. They're not going to make a big deal out of what they take out, just what they add to "replace" things.

I would agree with you on the reasoning, but I think it's a little silly with adapters available. Just include a coupon for a free VGA, DVI or DisplayPort adapter with a Mac Mini. They included a DVI-to-VGA adapter with my Mac Mini and MBP, so I don't see the big deal with including it with the new stuff.
