idk why everyone's still all wanting blu-ray right now, as great of a next-format standard it is. If there WAS blu-ray on the next desktop line we'd have a special event for it.

Granted if tomorrow/today (today = technically today) bears no fruit THEN that's a different story...but if Hardmac proves true then I'd say wait til WWDC for bluray.

I rate the release date of this rumor at 60%.
The spec rumor at 30%.

60% because this is the time of year they update iMacs, however, it'd have a better impact marketing wise if it was announced at a major event, which will happen rather soon.

30% because those increments are too weak to carry the iMac line for an entire year, let alone 6 months, and the Mac mini for 2 years. It doesn't make sense for them to have postponed the updates for this long for such a weak upgrade, except that they were ripping people off for as long as they possibly can (and still will be if those specs are true). Think of how it'd be reviewed. "Ummm...this would have been a nice unannounced upgrade 6 MONTHS AGO when the technology was there and available on PCs and even the latest Macbooks. The price and spec gap between the Macs and PCs is now too large. You can get much more for your money going with a PC. 2 out of 5 stars. "

Because the mini is the "switcher" product. Not many people are going to happen to have a miniDP capable display laying around until it is better established.

Did you even read what you typed? Can you please point me to a 'miniDVI capable' display? BOTH of these ports need adapters. There aren't any (non-apple) display that can connect to either natively. That argument is completely invalid. A 'switcher' would not benefit in any way from a miniDVI port.

One other question re BluRay.

Would it even be noticeable on an Apple Monitor/Computer??? I'm comparing it to the current HD programs that are available. They are great for watching via AppleTV, but they don't differ much in terms of quality when viewed on a computer. Just something to consider...

No quad iMac,???

Hello Dell $450 Quad-core hackintosh

As a stockholder I am very disappointed, as a consumer I am outraged.

If those terrible specs are true, I say go for it and be vocal about why. I may do the same. Love OS X, but their consumer desktops are getting too far behind and are beyond a reasonable "Apple tax" value wise. It's becoming the rip-off designer brand of computers. Purse costs $0.50 to make, put the Gucci logo on it and sell it for $500+. Rich people don't compare the features of the purse with others, they're just happy knowing they have something that shows they're wealthy to others.

No quad? I only know of one quad laptop off the top of my head anyway. Don't the iMac's use laptop processors?
Well, at least I don't feel like I gotta sell my 4 month old iMac to get me a new one. I'll have to see just what all is added to this 'new model'. I wonder what I could get for my current one? :D

What type of difference would you really see between the 2.8ghz with 4gb ddr2 vs the 2.93ghz and 4gb of ddr3?

Damn damn damn damn damn

God (or who ever) damn it!!! I do not have room for a 24", I want a 20" but not just an entry level model. First they force glossy on you and now they force size on you. Damn you Apple if this is true.

I was planning to get the 20 inch because that was all I could afford. Them making the 24 standard is an AWESOME surprise.

Do realize how little of a difference dimension wise that is?

to answer....

WTF are you talking about?

Why not do it and get a new imac with better specs?

Why wouldn't the SKU match and why wouldn't i give them a SKU? I have my receipt. Man you guys need to read instead of skim through posts. I still have not received a answer to a simple question. Where are you getting this from?

I will just wait and see if they are released and call Apple to get a straight answer or google it.

I bought a imac five days ago. I plan on returning it upon release of the new imacs which is my right given I am within the fourteen day window. I will package it up as new with receipt, if they ask it I opened it, I will tell them yes. If they don't ask, I will not tell them. Nothing underhanded going on here.

Do they let you trade it for a new one less the restocking fee if there is one, or do they let you return the one you bought with a restocking fee, and you purchase a new one. Not a hard question.

How is this confusing?

it isnt really confusing...... what will happen is either of the two situations you explained... depending on the store. Normally you have to pay the restocking fee and you get the new model for the same price (+the fee of course. kind of like a swapout) They should let you choose what you want to upgrade to - either the new model at the same price point or an upgraded version. if its the upgraded version, you'll return the old one and re-buy the new one.

They will know its been opened.. so don't think there's any way to trick them about this ... and they will probably ask for your receipt.

If you're really nice or really bitchy (either of the two extremes) there's a chance they could waive the restocking fee... but usually a manager has to do that. i'd say be nice. bitchiness only pisses everyone around you off.

keep in mind they may or may not have the one you want in stock (if they don't, its a chance they might not get that model in until after your 14 day window has passed... you will want to be sure to work something out if this turns out to be the case).... and if you did any upgrades return those too as many times the prices to ram upgrades change and/or the ram speed increases. And even then it might be more beneficial to go to crucial for the ram anyways.

back your stuff up because they won't make provisions for moving anything onto the new computer from the old.

hope that helps

I have both models and the height difference is negligible. I am all for getting a cheaper 24" model. Besides, the new low end 20" model will very likely be even nicer than the current mid range 20".

This is a damned good point. Why do we all believe that the mini will have a miniDVI? What function could it possibly supply that a miniDP + an expansion of the adapter range not offer?

I have to really agree here. I love the company and all but doesn't anyone at Apple look at what they see in say BestBuy from time to time? Apple has no reasonable priced 15" laptop nor a mid tower option. Apple is in such fits about hacked versions of OS X but doesn't see that people want to buy from them but they don't get why some things are so damn hard to get Apple to give them. A simple freebie for the MB and the Mini is the hdd. A 250gb drive should be included on both models at the current price. The current Mini (3/1/09) is pathetic. If Apple goes with the rumored $100 drop due to the economy plus the new updates then it would be a decent computer but still under par with other 'mini towers' offered by the other guys.

I'll save the rest until after this update comes.

I hope you are right. That would be fine by me. Hopefully I will be able to upgrade it in store.

Which is why I don't get why it can't have an HDMI on it. It's the same concept it just happens to be all over everything except apple computers. The did slip it on the :apple:TV but left it off everything else. Hell, it is a miniDVI if you think about it.... with sound to boot!

isnt hdmi a TV standard?

Many times I just wish Apple would add an extra micron or two and give us full sized video ports. I'm tired of paying $20-30 for a fragile adaptor that breaks after a year or less.
I agree 100%!

The answer would be to make actual 6'/2m converter cables (e.g. mini-DP on one end and HDMI on the other), instead of 3" long adapters.

Extending my comment above...

You could conceivably run a mini-DP to HDMI cable* to your HDTV for HTPC functionality, plus run a mini-DVI to DVI-D cable to a monitor for productivity apps and web surfing. Or vice versa.

*Assumes, of course, that all of the sound channels are being properly passed through the mini-DP connector like the DisplayPort standard supports.

Not sure why the epic fail. Apple won't release an iMac that kills off the MacBook pro from 2008 they won't do it until the mac pro comes out and that won't happen until all the hardware has shipped so you can spend another $129 for the OS.

Personally, I will be surprised if the mini has both dedicated GPU AND FireWire. As apple always made the machines unable to run pro apps unless you spent at least $1000.
 EPIC FAIL

No quad-core, not even a speed bump in the high end. What were they thinking?

They better use the new GPUs to make up for this…

And for all you quad-core hopefuls, they obviously couldn't get 65 W in, and they didn't use the mobile quad-cores either, so until Arrandale's successor goes quad-core who knows when (probably 2011), we won't see quad-core in the iMac. So we may see PCs will have 6-cores with Westmere and Sandy Bridge at the same time as dual-core iMacs.

I agree. Isn't the first time "pilot" stuff have happened. Someone said Logic 9 would be released this month. Maybe the March event is a "pro" event, with Logic, FCS, the Mac Pro, "Phenomenon" (whatever happened to that anyway?) etc.

isnt hdmi a TV standard?

Well as of now yes. It's a TV and soon to be audio standard. At least in home theater audio it will be. But why not a computer standard as well? HDMI is capable of so much and it's just inching it's way into actual use in the computer market. Almost every laptop $500 and up have an HDMI port on them. Apple could have easily put two of them where the full sized DVI was on the previous Mini. It could have been added to their whole line. The conspiracy would be that Apple wants a few more bucks for adapter cables and special displays. It would have been the smarter choice to go with HDMI.

I ran a Mac Mini as a HTPC for years, and having recently replaced it with an AppleTV, won't be going back. The interface is just better for that purpose. Also, the ATV doesn't use up an iTunes authorization.

I have a time capsule, so no problems there. I bought the imac from Amazon so I will probably have to return it to Amazon. Ship it back. I was just wondering would Apple take a exchange like they do for the iphone when bought from ATT.

Thanks for the reply. I appreciate your input.
