is the Ulitmate iMac going to have mobile quad core? why there is only three CPUs listed when there four parts?

if iMac staying dual core; i think Mac Pro may be going to change in bigger atleast in price point...

well, it is still rumor, we shall find out tomorrow....

Does quad core really make that big of a difference? I have a feeling a lot of people hoping for it are assuming it'll make this big noticable difference for them other than in the spec list.

What uses 4 cores? And when something does use 4 cores, most of the time it shows barely noticeable improvement over 2 cores. And I doubt iMac users are doing these crazy things that use 4 cores to the point where it manages to increase things VERY noticeably.

Maybe I'm wrong...but that's what I always thought. I remember reading an article a long time ago comparing the two and they used gaming as an example, games that supported 4 cores showed very little improvement over the dual cores.

I guess it's more future proof though because sooner or laters more developers will create applications specially for 4 core functionality.

They seriously do. The iMac - Mac Pro gap is becoming ridiculous. The iMac will have dual-core Penryns while the Mac Pro will have 2 quad-core Gainestowns?

Hopefully the presence of 3 24" iMacs means that an 28" iMac is coming soon. I hope that iMac will have quad-core, and since it's larger and potentially has more room for cooling, it should be free of any thermal restrictions the 20" and 24" ones might have had.

I'm waiting for the 72" iMac. None of this 24" or 28" crap.
:p

24" as the mass market model? It's a bit big for my current desk but if it's priced right.... yum yum yum! But what will the graphics card be? Hmmm...

I just can't see how their mac mini design would be the same after so many years... Anyway, looking forward very much to the new iMacs and mac minis, although more excited about Snow Leopard and the iPhone.

Absolute JUNK!

What's with the damn same old exterior with the Mini?

Has Apple suddenly lost all sense of creativity?

So, so, so disappointing.

And before anyone moans about this comment, consider the almost 600 days since the MacMini has been updated and ask your self, is THIS the best they can do?

Everything else is being prepped for the new MacOS X 10.6, new MacBooks (pros), iMacs etc. Yet the Mini stays like it used to. The specs aren't even that special. No, Blu-Ray, no nothing. The Graphics and processor is the LEAST of the things they should have updated...

SO disappointed!

Video editing for one. Snow Leopard is building in greater support for multiple cores.

Likely because two iMacs will share the same CPU.

Could be, speculation in the Gainestown Mac Pro thread points to a price increase of the base model, but who knows.

Core 2 Duo? No quads? No Core i7? Lame.
And the top clock will still be 3.07 GHz…

No mention of video cards either?
Hopefully they'll give us some good GPU options. This may be like the $1299 MacBook which got a much better GPU in exchange for a slower CPU.

does this mean we wont get a chinless iMac?

or they're just not hosting a media event.. which i suspect because steve said that they don't need big media events anymore because of how many apple stores there are.. but i do hope the new iMac has no chin, and looks like the cinema display.

they did ..what you saw was the fake photo.

new one comes out tomorrow

I guess video editing is common in mac users. But if Snow Leopard is building towards greater support for multiple cores then why wouldn't the updates leading to it like this one be a stage for it.

Sounds fishy.

wow no offense to anyone but DAMN THOSE iMac UPDATES ARE TRASH!!!

i waited so long and its looking like im getting a meager update to DDR3 and prolli a gpu upgrade?!?! the clockspeed doesnt change on the highend 24"?!?!

wow.

So, basically treading water.

Meanwhile, the Mac Pros are being trounced by £800 Dell Core i7 boxen.

Hmf. Would have liked to have bought some iMacs for work, we're in the purchasing window - but this looks unlikely to be competitive to me.
If Dell's are so much better buy Dell.

I'm not a fan of glossy screens but when it comes time to upgrade the MBP, I'm going to have to suck it up because the matte screen is gone and I'm not going back to Windows.

Future proofing is important. Also the 65 W desktop quad-cores that were rumored are of somewhat similar prices to mobile dual-cores of similar GHz. Plus Apple could have given only the higher-end iMacs (those users would likely be doing more intensive work) quad-cores and use cheaper dual-cores in the lower-end ones.

Snow Leopard also brings better support for GPU acceleration, so I'm hoping for much better GPUs in the new iMacs.

I totally agree, the CPU options here were lower than my "low expectations" prediction (3.2 GHz top CPU).

Mobile quad core parts are too slow. Apple won't want to have processor options where one is better at some tasks than the other on the same range. As for 3 CPUs for four parts, well there are other things to differentiate them.

So is there a DVD player in the mini or not?

The Mini's always had a DVD option. But I'm wondering whether Apple will release it with BluRay. That would make the AppleTV obsolete overnight. I'd buy a BluRay Mini in a heartbeat and wire it up to my HDTV.

I know it's just wishful thinking....

Just because these specs match the photos being thrown around does not mean the photos were of a real mini. The specs have been out there longer than the photos.

I'm still standing in the FAKEY FAKE camp.

It has a Core i7, and on certain benchmarks it beats the 8-core Mac Pro.

That wouldn't be too bad…

While it wouldn't surprise me if it beats 8 core machines on apps that aren't optimized for that many cores, I assume when the software supports 8 cores, that machine is still king of the hill, right? If someone is going to use the word "trounced" that better be across the board and not just gaming and consumer apps.

Wow this actually looks like it could happen this time. But if this is true the only advantage the new top spec iMac would have over the old one would be better and more RAM. Unless they put an amazing GPU in there.
Some people were expecting Quad cores in all iMacs. I never did but I did expect one in the top model.
