Since it hasn't died yet - maybe they are preparing something "special" to coincide with the MB and MBP redesigns... :D

If it takes until July to hear ANY news on the Mini - be it life or death - I swear, I am going to blow a head gasket.

Didn't Intel say they'd reduce Merom shipments to 33% by May? That means that, worst case scenario, we'll know by the beginning of June. I don't think I can wait even that long.

I actually hope they keep the Mini. It's way more affordable than any other Apple computer; we all know that.

I do hope to see the Mini upgraded to today's standards though.

If a 2.0+GHz 1GB Mini comes out, I would jump right on that :)

Waiting

I've been waiting so long for an update now, that I don't know if I can hold on any longer. I'm about to slip back into the world of Windows, where you don't have to pay today's price for last year's technology. *growl*

They really can't get rid of the MM. If the got rid of it, it would leave a hole in the Apple desktop lineup.

For $200 more, you can get the MB, which can be used a desktop.

Don't mean to re-hash a point debated 750 posts ago, but many of us don't want a laptop for a desktop; first, throw in the price of a 22" screen and now it's at least $500 more, and second, it's a footprint I don't have space for. Small desktop/large screen is the only way to go for some situations.

Glad I didn't wait after the last [admittedly disappointing] update; I've now had 9 months of flawless mini performance under my belt and still nothing better on the market.

jinx

I'm probably one of the few people watching this thread, who's happy the mini hasn't been updated yet. As I continue to altered my budget due to recent expenses, I'm not ready to buy till the end of May. Course this means it will get updated, oh I don't know, tomorrow...

Aha!

So it's your fault the update is delayed.
If the new mini doesn't come till the end of May I'm gonna be so mad at you :D

If we wait until June, there's a chance we could get Montevina, and thus X4500 GPU...

BAHAHAHA yeah right, who am I kidding?! ;)

the mini being upgraded to a chip which is new ? how high are the chances for that ? it has to be at least 1,5 years old
;)

that said anybody guessing on perhaps some strategy rethinking at Apple HQ after this whole openmac thing ? after all it made some quite big waves on the internet which sure didn't go by unnoticed

Apple need to release a cheap mini before that OpenComputer takes off.

2.1ghz Core 2 Duo
2gb RAM
160gb HDD
X3100
Superdrive

£399 max

Not really. You're comparing the high-end Mac mini, which is lagging one revision behind the MacBook, to the low-end MacBook.

Entry-level Mac mini: US$599 (CAD$649)
Entry-level MacBook: US$1099 (CAD$1149)

There's a difference of $500, not $200. And as I said, you can't say "I have to choose the high-end Mac mini to have similar specs" because the MacBook was upgraded but not the Mac mini.

And anyway, people who can't afford to pay more will look at the lowest-priced Mac mini as their only option to get a Mac, DVD burner or not.

Yea, It's probably EOL. Surely something better will replace it soon. Maybe not a mid-tower or new-cube, and maybe not a mini/nano or mini/tv, but something better. I really didn't need one in aug 07 but I got it just in case it's EOL. I like it. It's quite, cute, small, functional, versatile and powerful enough for it's form and factor. I use it a lot, every day.

I wouldn't be surprised if Apple killed it off, to be honest.

The Mini, especially the Intel Mini, did serve as an excellent way for folks to "experiment" with OS X while also supporting Windows, but I agree that it makes a very poor Windows Vista machine. And since, like it or not, Vista is going to be forced down most consumer's throats by Microsoft, Apple may very well decide that they need to either offer a "trial box" with more performance or just assume that anyone making the switch will embrace OS X from the start (as I did) and buy an iMac / MacBook (as I did) and therefore the Mini is no longer needed.

I'd rather wait until a few weeks before or after WWDC and get a Mini based on Montevina then get a Santa Rosa unit now, frankly.

As would I, now that I've waited this long... but would Apple actually put Montevina in it or is their spite for this poor machine just great enough to clobber it once again with really old technology? I'm just cynical enough to think they might.

Even if Apple releases a new Mini on June 10th, it will have been 10 months since the last update (August '07), which, itself, went 11 months before being refreshed. Two updates in 21 months? There should have been three, if not four.

With the Mac Mini's form factor, I would think that the lower temps that .45nm Penryns would bring would be very beneficial. I don't believe the Mac Mini was transitioned to Santa Rosa, so I would hope that Apple would give it Montevina, as well, so they can use those cooler-running CPUs.

Santa Rosa also supports Penryn chips.

That's why I'm fearing that Apple will do just the bare minimum - AGAIN.

Recall last update, Santa Rosa was not by any means new yet the MacMini still did not get it.
