I just bought another Mac, and it came with Leopard. But that's what I wanted. I have some hardware (FW audio interfaces, etc.) that may not get SL support for months so it was important to me to buy before SL was the only OS shipping.

Oh, and I'll still get the up-to-date SL discs for two Macs for the cost of shipping ($9.95/each).

Apple has been pretty good about this sort of thing, though there will always be someone who bought one day earlier than the cutoff. Even still, I can't see that the $29 SL upgrade would be a huge upgrade issue for anyone.

Which FW audio interfaces? I've found the built in support seems decent. Good portion of fw interfaces are based on the cheapie bridgeco chipsets which work fine in SL 32 and 64bit (edirol FA66/100, presonus firebox, maudio firewire *, etc etc). A mates RME Fireface on the other hand only works in 32bit cause RME are yet to issue 64bit kexts. No biggy, SL in 32bit mode seems to be faster than leopard in 32bit anyway.

Do you guys really think Apple will start selling some crappy OS? Apple has definitely something under the sleeve that non of us know about. [...] The rumored "GM build" is not half of what the last build of Snow Leopard will be. [...] :apple::)

I admire your wishful thinking, but do yourself a favor and look up posts from the time when Leopard was released. People said the exact same thing and didn't want to believe Apple would want to ship such a buggy mess (Leopard GM). As you can see from the many people who somehow tout that release as perfectly fine, such a share of bugginess will (have to) be accepted. Snow Leopard's final release version will not be that different from the one currently believed to be GM (if at all).

That there, the comment in bold, annoys me so much ... my wife is the prime culprit for that! She'll drive past the Shell garage selling Unleaded for 1.03 to drive another 5 minutes to the Tesco garage because they're 99.9! It's just under 4 pence of a difference, and when you fill the tank up fully the cost difference is virtually nothing!

I try to tell her, but does she listen? Noooo .... I get hit with words like "Recession" and "Credit Crunch", at which point I suddenly hear the birds sing and the wind blow before realising I've managed to enter "My Happy Place". :D

dude, this whole post had me rolling, only because I know so many people who fail to see the folly in saving less money than they spent in the value of the gas and time it took to do it... and speaking of Unleaded, prices must've dropped a fair amount since I was last in Europe (it was clear into the €1.25-1.40/L range the whole time I was there!).

but I digress... at this point, I've seen SL's "theoretical" release date bounce back and forth so many times that I've decided to simply sit back and wait for the announcement- which, I might add, is next to impossible while browsing this site. ;) (I still hope to hear something early next week)

I understand but my point is.. it should not be a crappy OS, because Snow Leopard is a "refinement" to Leopard. And I see people complaining about the bugginess of the OS, but by fact it should be way better than Leopard. However, it is obvious that the Os will need to have an upgrade (lets say 10.6.1) because everything needs an improvement and can't come out PERFECT. But, I still think Apple has something under their sleeve.. :)

Mine too. Find it hard to believe that Apple would release SL without any real notice or fanfare....

I don't... it's really just an extra good service pack release to make Leopard faster and more reliable. I don't even think Apple wants tons of "fanfare" around it. They just want to get it out. That's it.

Maybe I'm wrong, but that's my 2¢.

Well done Apple, for releasing a broken OS. If it's the last build us devs got our hands on then it's broken.

iTunes and Quicktime STILL Crash like buggery.
and there are some other bugs here and there.

No way is it final. This, in my opinion, is a rushed release. bad on Apple.

Prove they just don't give a **** like they use too.
The Magic of Apple has gone!!

I don't know which release you have but I have 10A432 and I can say there are NO bugs with quicktime and itunes.

In which case I'm crossing my fingers that 10A432 isn't GM. It wasn't that it was bad but just not as polished as I'd expect from Apple.

Did anyone else experience System Preferences amnesia? eg. Settings seem to save, however after a period of time or after restart some preferences were reset to Apple set defaults

For some reason I doubt you are a dev:rolleyes:

As a developer, I've been testing 10a432 (the last build, rumored to be GM) and nothing has once crashed on me. It feels very solid and ready to ship.

I think Apple isn't announcing anything because this really isn't a 'major' OS release like Leopard and Tiger were. This is just kind of a re-tune of an already great OS.

I have an Apogee Duet (love this for vocals and miked acoustic guitars) and a MOTU UltraLite mk3 (for everything else, plus it does MIDI-over-FireWire in the bargain). While I wouldn't trade either one of them, neither company had a great initial track record when Leopard first shipped so I don't have high hopes...

My plan is to test the SL waters via external FW drives but continue with Leopard as the main boot volume at least through 10.6.2 or so.

That would be contrary to all other Mac OS X releases. Apple better get their marketing and hype machine in gear. They're going to face some major competition in the press once Windows 7 is released. The inevitable comparison articles at the major tech news outlets (NYT, All Things D, CNET, PC Magazine, ZDNet, Wired, Engadget, Gizmodo, etc) will be in full swing in next few months.

Apple won hands down in the Vista vs. Leopard articles. It'll be interesting to see how they do this go around.

I agree. Been very impressed with how much more polished this build is then past ones.

Has anyone who has pre-ordered the Up to date in Australia got there status as Ship: 28 August. Or saying "Prepared for Shipment"

Hope this helps...

This is exactly what I think. It makes total sense. I have a feeling we will see release on August 28th.

And also, we still don't know that 10A432 is the GM. Or maybe it is, and if it is buggy then they'll release 10.6.1 within a few days. Seems great to me.
