GM Builds are not bug-free: they're still sorting out bugs in Leopard, a year after it went GM.

GM builds should be relatively stable and bug-free, feature complete and API complete, and are tested extensively.

They don't just compile a copy and slap a GM sticker on it - they work very hard to get a GM candidate build, then test that one build 24hrs for a few days, running scripts and simulating user behaviour to test its stability. It's also used by real people, who give feedback on whether or not it is acceptable. GM builds are compiled long before they are so declared. They won't make 'the last build on Friday' the GM.

This is what bugfix 10.0.X updates are for. 10.6.1 will probably be released in 4-6 weeks, after general availability, after Apple has received feedback and fixed bugs they couldn't fix in time for the GM. The GM build often has several known issues they couldn't fix in time.

this news is pretty much useless till we get a screen shot of the actual BUILD NUMBER!

There's so much confusion and disagreement on what number turned out to become the final GM version...

I wish they'd just reveal it and get it over and done with.

whether apple ships SL soon or never, i couldn't even begin to guess. but i will say this supposed DVD this purchaser got is BS!!!!!!

i've had my hands on pretty much every drop-in updater that apple has ever used and they have all been labeled as such:

Leopard's for example was labeled:
CPU Drop-in DVD

i think what we have here is simply a photo taken by an employee somewhere during the manufacturing/duplication process. and it's being used to try and generate false anticipation of a possible release.

again, they may release soon, but this photo means crap, and i doubt is a DVD that will be used as a drop-in updater.

If Apple were my friend, I doubt the friendship would last very long due to my friend's secretive nature.

It helps to think of Apple as a woman. Takes all your money, sex on her terms only, and try as you might, you'll never really understand her.

Whatever the cause or action on these builds and supposed releases... not to mention the hullaballoo on the actual release dates... one thing is for certain... this DOES hurt Apple now if it's not released on the 28th.. how? because we're anticipating something that's not officially been announced...

The best thing is to wait and see www.apple.com page load the Snow Leopard release page. Anything before that is a tedious game of guessing and quite frankly, everyone has guessed, argued and come up with some reasonable conclusion to when we can expect the new OS.

But the fact remains... it's not official so it doesn't really exist till apple says so. That means, there can be tons of hoaxes, people who HAVE BLANK discs with no contents on them to provide the illusion of an actual release... etc..

it's just getting too tedious... I can't wait to get it so we can move on to the more interesting talks like "What's working and what's NOT working".

;)

I hate it when people call Snow Leopard a service pack, because it isn't. It brings 64-bit support, GCD, and Open CL and more. For only $29.

I agree! And it should also free up 6GB of disk space! And it should be faster!

Apple's interface works, why would they change it if they haven't come up with something better. They want you to get this. And (in theory) machines will benefit from it.

That's why it's 29$ and not $100+

And this is one of the turning points where the OS stops supporting old computers. Intel Only.

And I think lots of software will start to take advantage of the features (and the non-PPC) and when old machines don't work with it, they can just blame Apple :)

I'm also thinking I read that QuickTime X is included and it has the QuickTime Pro (normally $29) extra features, but that could be a rumor. My MacBook is 18 months old so I'm not sure how that will hold up with all the new features though.

Lmao, this is not only the first OS X copy for Apple to actually ship ON its release date that they said it would be... but even BEFORE it. Haha. Cept it's buggy as f*ck.

Why are a lot of people having cows?
Is your life really better if you knew a built number or a release date?
Apple doesn't need to do anything.
We have no rights at all when it comes to this information.
When the OS is ready we have the right to buy it.
And I think that's more then enough.
Or go for an other platform if you don't like that.
Deal with it.

Okay then... from my point of view this is a mac community where we love to obsess over the release dates of upcoming software and hardware. And to be honest with you, I bet Apple likes it. They probably think it's awesome that there's a huge fan base for their upcoming products.

Combo updates have nothing to do with PowerPC or Intel. Combo updates are for if you skip a 10.x.x release and do not have the one exactly prior to the current release.

Plus there is evidence that Snow Leopard's smaller apps have more to do with optimizing localization files than removing PPC code:

Thanks for stating the capitalist/consumerist point of view so succinctly.

To the barricades!
A capitalistic company that makes luxury items has done us all harm!
We need to retaliate!

Don't be an internet-revolutionary for the built-number or the release date of an OS.
It makes you look stupid.
Chill, peeps.

Too easy

I think some of you are accepting this as fact a little too easily. Having read the original article and the update, it says the user bought the mini for production use (as in primary work purposes) and is worried he won't be able to revert back to 10.5 if 10.6 has compatibility issues and such, so he doesn't dare install it.

He also states he received the mini on the 20th.

Seeing how easy it would be to swap out the .5 for a .6, and that there's no way to confirm if this legit (such as with a known or likely future build number), I taking this with a fair bit of salt, and may have been posted simply to drive traffic.

As third possibility, a close friend of mine once bought a Talking Heads CD with all the packaging and disc label showing that it was what it said it was, the actual content was some country western singer, so the Apple CD press may have simply accidently jumped the gun on their labeling, and this media might really be 10.5 in disguise.

Chill? All I did was say "thanks." I don't care when they release it. I probably won't even upgrade my current systems, I'll just wait until my next purchase to get it. IMO the performance improvements will really start to be seen at 4 and more CPUs (virtual CPUs, at any rate).
