Mac Mini
Why upgrade it now and not last year? Or the year before. Or the year before that.

Very mysterious.

Surely it won’t get a redesign before we have ARM chips on it and surely it’s way to early for any Mac to go ARM.

While I agree it would be odd timing (surely they'll want to do a big blowout at WWDC when macOS goes ARM?), I think you could pretty easily get away with doing it in a Mac mini, and maybe this new 'low-end' MacBook/Air, since all they really need is the Finder, Safari, Photos, and iTunes mostly.

But I also think Apple's let the mini languish long enough that you could have a new ARM emulate x86 faster than the current mini, so it could be completely transparent, and future-ready.

I have a 2017 iMac with a fantastic display, what is the significant upgrade going to do? My biggest complaint at the moment is the lack of 4K codec support with YouTube. I have a 5K display with a 1080P limit on one of the most popular video sites. Sure, I can use another browser but I should not have to. Safari is fine for me otherwise why the need for a 3rd party.

I waited for a Mini before I bought my iMac. I don't need a new one now but happy to see something might happen with them. I thought mine was fantastic. It has been reduced to a family machine for occasional use but it's still running.

My guess is a faster refresh rate. That would be interesting, a 120hz display.

My mac mini's are in their last legs. One I had to revert back to Sierra after it almost got bricked trying to upgrade to High Sierra. However, I mainly use them as a Photos server for my apple tv's, and as a CardDAV and CalDAV servers. For me, these are private data that I would not, and cannot (via NDAs) put in possession of third parties. But since Server is now dead, I'm not sure I'll upgrade my mini's.

Interested in a mac mini and imac upgrade. I want to be able to use the imac as a monitor in the future when updates are no longer coming. My mac minis both work fine for my needs so I really dont need to upgrade them other than to be prepared for the eventual non support but all that I'd ask is for usb-c support (and still maintain usb a ports for my logitech dongle) and give me easier access to upgrade/replace the internal storage.

I think you need to calm down with the hyperbole.

But I do agree, the Macbook Air should be killed off and the Macbook be given a price cut and two USB-C ports. I love my Macbook but it's annoying not being able to charge it from either side.

The MacBook Air shouldn't be killed off - give it the screen upgrade it should have received a couple of years ago, along with the normal processor bump, and it is a fine computer at a premium price.

Even so, I'm curious why Apple wouldn't bring 120 Hz to both the iMac and MacBook Pro at the same time. I would expect the iMac to be more of a challenge for this, not less.
for the imac, they display can be always 120hz..since does not run on batteries so no savings needed...but for macbooks, they need promotion

Google refuses to support H.265 on YouTube and Apple refuses to support VP9 in Safari. I think Apple is right to back H.265 as the standard going forward (Google themselves developed VP9, though it does have the advantage of being royalty-free), but both companies are acting stubborn and hence no 4K for Safari on YouTube.
