Anyone knows if Tiger will play on this Mac minis?

It is supposed to be 64 and Steve told so this in his speech. So, will it run on G4's? Mabe thats why the mini is bundled with appleworks instead of iWork.
Tiger will be able to support both 32- and 64-bit hardware and software. iWork doesn't (yet) replace all the features of AppleWorks, so it makes sense to keep it around for a while.

Thats right, Apple release the Mac mini only that in 6 months Tiger will not run on it.

Any G3, G4 and G5 with a FireWire port will run Tiger quite fine. :)

I am an open-minded Windows user who has never used (but is curious about) a Mac. Can someone please explain to me what the big deal is about the mini-Mac. It's being touted as a reason for Windows users to switch. But as I understand it, for $499 the MiniMac gives you:
1.25 ghz
40 gig HD
256 RAM
256 video RAM.

I just got a Dell ad in my USA Today this morning. For $399 you get:
2.8 ghz
80 gig HD
512 RAM
512 video RAM.

This is a sincere question, not a troll. What am I missing?

Mac OS X.3 and soon X.4. Plus iLife 2004 and 2005. :)

Question?

With only two USB ports, my keyboard will be plugged into one & the mouse to the other which leaves me none for a printer & a flash drive.

Is there a solution for this?

The Performance of a 1.25GHz G4 is about the same as a 1.8GHz Intel Chip, so the PC is faster, but not as much a the clock speed difference suggests.

The Dell will come in a big black plastic case, the Mini is very small

The Mini is almost silent in operation, the you will hear the fans on the Dell.

The Mini comes with a much better operating system and a industry leading consumer software bundle with iLife 05. unlike most bundled Apps you get with PC's, if you have a digital camera / Video camera you will use the iLife Apps.

No virus / Malware with Apple's OS

You can move the Mini and connect it to the TV in the Kitchen say with the separately sold Mini DVI to S-Video lead and watch a DVD.

Does the Dell come with a CD Burner?

You friends and family will not say, Wow what is that ? - if you buy the Dell

My apple keyboard has 2 additional USB ports on it, one of which I often use for my printer. You'll be all set ;)

The first thing to ask, is a 2.8 GHz what? The clock speeds mean entirely different things for different CPU families. They don't even mean the same thing within the Wintel world, let alone attempting to compare completely different architectures.

You're also dealing with completely different operating systems. For many buyers, OS X is what they're really after. It's simply not available in a reasonable form for intel hardware. In particular, the virus/worm/trojan problem is especially severe in the Windows world these days, and many people are interested in jumping off the treadmill of scanner updates. Serious problems like that could show up for OS X some day, but so far it hasn't happened and people like that.

The RAM thing doesn't compare so well either. With different operating systems, drivers and applications, the numbers don't line up so easily. You've really got to look at the applications you want to run on a potential machine, and find out if they perform acceptably.

The different hardware vendors also include different mixes of application software. If the machine includes software that you would otherwise want to go out and buy, that's going to alter the value of the machine to you.

So, the questions you're asking are reasonable to ask, but unfortunately they don't lead to useful answers :(

Either go for the wireless mouse / keyboard option or buy a USB hub. However I would say that Apple should have added at least one additional USB port.
Some Apple keyboards did have a hub built in, I am not sure if the new ones do. Quite often LCD displays (Like Apples) have USB hubs built in. The Apple displays also have a firewire hub.

Thanks, but I wanted to use my existing windows style keyboard & mouse.

FYI: Not familiar with Apple products.

If you're going with a third-party keyboard, a $10 USB hub will do you just fine.

USB Hub will be the best bet - The Apple store is selling a 4 port hub for about $30, but I am sure you may be able to find a cheaper one.

Oh i didnt see that. Man that kind of ruined it for me

I don't have a problem with an external psu, my epia ve5000 got that aswell, but i'm very dissapointed with that fan being in there.

I have all the comps except the epia on other rooms and use remote desktop all day because I can't stand the noise anymore, and I was hoping this thing would be fanless so I could start watching movies in my room again (the 533mhz is good for chatting and browsing and so, but not much more, it can't even run iTunes, playing mp3s make the cpu go to 100% while winamp and wmp10 wont take more than 10-20%, so i'm gonna have to get a zen micro so I can sync my mp3s).

Guess I'll have to change the TV to one with scart and get one of those cheap dvd-divx thingies :(

I think your specs are a little wrong. The discount Dell you speak of has a 2.4Ghz Celeron (weak), XP Home Edition (weak), 40 gig drive, 256MB RAM, A CD or DVD drive. No firewire (not even an option on their base model). No dedicated graphics processor. Once you bring it up to spec with the Mini, you end up with a $700 machine (software equivalents included). That's with XP Pro and antivirus software and you STILL don't have a dedicated graphics processor. Don't forget to upgrade to a combo drive.

Go to Dell's site. Spec it out.

On the other hand, you can add a Gig of Ram easier or more cheaply.

GPU?

Many mentioned others, so I just mention the video. Is it integrated or an actual Graphics accelerator? Also, a TRULY similar system fomr dell costs 1270, as I'v postred here many times.

look...

Because UK Mac keyboard layout is not the same as UK PC keyboard, which was my point, also generally no command key on PC keyboard (expect Logitech after market keyboards)

That's really wierd. Isn't there a standared UK keyboard layout? If not just pick the UK one in the "International" Prefs, and switch out the mixed keys. :D

Would be if it was a P4, but it's only a Celeron. I've heard the G4 matches up to the Celeron at about 2:1.

If its a Celeron-D, that's not necessarily the case anymore. The old Celeron, is dare I say, possibly even 2.5:1 (for Celeron :: G4) clock speeds, the Celeron is THAT bad.

This link is especially helpful...you see the old Celeron 2.6Ghz getting 39.7FPS in Sim City 4, while the newer Celeron-D @ 2.66Ghz gets 62.6FPS

What would the G4 be closest to, the old Celeron, the new Celeron-D or the P4?

1st time I ever saw THIS!

HAs anybody seen this on the Apple Store yet? It's even on the Ed. Store. Wonder waht they'll match with. Just other Mac resellers or PCs, too. It'd really be good for mac mini ram and all those cheapos complaing about getting $20 k/m or hub!!
