Its a plastic top like the iMac G5. The bottom and back of the Mac mini have vents. :)

And this is false advertising by Apple, since they show the Mac mini stacked on they web page.

Bull@#$% it is. It's about as "false" as the "professional driver, closed course" car ads. If you'll notice, the web page also includes a note that it is expressly not for stacking.

And just because it has vents doesn't mean there aren't cooling considerations. Try running a Powerbook on heavy load with the lid closed. "But it has vents!" Psht.

Benchmark?

1.
Has anybody run a benchmark on the mac mini?
If so, where to see the results?

2.
Well i think the Mac Mini is great!!

The problem i had with iMac and eMac was the integrated screen.

Buy a new integrated screen with every new mac?!?
Well, but not the smallest one, because working is not possible on such low resolutions.

The Mac Mini is the first lowend Mac that official (macparts.de/ibook) allows to work on high-res. I do not need the power of a g5, but the screen of a cinema-disp. 20".....I WILL GET ONE.

I quite like the Mac Mini, it's tiny, it's affordable, it's gorgeous and in keeping with Apple's strategy to get more switchers. The new iMac is related to the iPod and the Mac Mini to the iPod Mini.

Way to go Apple! I think I'm gonna get one to keep at home

missed the point

Mercedes does make one. Its called the A-class, I think. Been out for years. Also, Mercedes is just ultra-luxe in the US. All US mercedes are loaded and get the biggest engines. They make taxi's in the rest of the world. Think E-class with a tiny 4 cylinder engine.

I know. I've been in both the A-class and Taxis in Germany many of times. The A-class is no Neon. The Neon's gotten better, but please. Anyway the point is, is that Apple won't make a plain basic absolutely no frills PC Box.

is it time to buy it

is it better to wait or be the first one on the block to own a mini?
The software alone is worth it, it's more affordable then a chip upgrade

In 6mths will they improve it?

Thanks for all the info, but I think its pretty obvious how its opened.

Thanks!

Bill

Hmm, how?

Would we need a special "table" with pins to go into openings in the bottom and release hooks? If it is so, it will be PITA to open it yourself.. sigh

Apple computer update timeframe is normally 9 months or so. However whatever computer you buy something faster will be released in the future. The Mini will be fine for most users everyday needs - web browsing, e-mail, iLife Apps, MS Office.

New case

Hope no one's posted this above, but the very cool bag company Tom Bihn has already designed a carrying case for the Mini:

WOW! That didn't take long.

The Mac mini may have been a strong choice if offered a year ago when I was buying my first G4 Mac. Went with the PB 12" because I just needed something that I could take between home office and the work office.

Finally will get a chance to see the difference

Apple finally allowing a union between other peripherals & allowing everyone to see how great their operating system is finally happening.

I used to believe 3.2 ghz was fast (for the 1st 2 months) until I had to start fixing the OS all the time.

People who rationalize Windows or Linux upfront price to buying Apple OS X equipment are living with the blinders on.

Windows: You will fix it all the time if you use it for multiple professional apps.
Windows: Usability is not even close to Mac

Linux: You better have a lot of time to learn how to use no selection of professional apps.
Linux: Sure there are 200,000 apps, but I wouldn't want to use them yet.

Mac: Great amateur & pro usability | stabilty & now low entry price.

Mac also allows amateurs to start dabbling in open source stuff without
indecipherable barriers.

In case no one has mentioned it . . .

Why can't you stack something on the mini? For the same reason you wouldn't stack something on your PowerBook -- the slot loading optical drive might not function properly. Therefore, I'm sure you could stack something very light on it -- but the thing is so small, it makes sense to have it be the top item.

Another accessory I guess we'll see very soon is something along the same lines as this:

technowarehouse_1809_219716

... for people who plan to leave two desks set up with monitor, keyboard and mouse and carry the Mac Mini between the two.

Nice looking bag, those that are quick on the market will get the cash. Besides being the first inexpensive Mac desktop, now it can also act as a portable. $40 is a pretty good price. Now all you will need is a keyboard, mouse, and monitor at the other end.

For $499, you get a nice unix-workstation. Looks like it will be really popular with IT and unix-geeks. ;)

I wanted to buy my parents and younger siblings the 1.25 eMac w/Superdrive, 512 Ram, 80 GB for Christmas.

Once my brother discovered my intentions, he asked for a PC instead because he has all these misconceptions about Macs from his ill informed coworkers, even though he's been to my house and knows from playing around with my iBook and iMac that they are very good machines.

So, I didn't want to get them something they wouldn't use, and I grudgingly got them a cheap Walmart HP Athlon 3200 80 GB, 512 Ram, DVD/R, 3 USB ports, 2 Firewire, Keyboard/Mouse, Monitor for the cheap price of $599.00 plus tax.

Nice? Not really.

Because in the last couple of weeks, I've learned it's not the HARDWARE, BUT the operating system running it. And this is where Macs stand out above all.

I've been to that damn house on so many times this month alone to fix stupid issues....last night, it was with Norton Anti-virus, a crippled Firefox (???) despite many attempts to uninstall/reinstall, show my brother how to use Windows version of iMovie (what a joke..it wouldn't read the USB 2 connection, had to download other things to make it "see the camcorder") and so many other issues. So, I went to my car, got my iBook, connected the camcorder, instant connection, no need for drivers, no need to restart the computer......it was toooooo easy. My brother had the look of "I wish I never asked for the PC!"

So to switchers, I say - the Mac mini may not be spectacular specs wise, but the marriage with OS X is WORTH every little pretty penny you'll spend to virus proof your PC. This is where the Macs truly excels past Windows. My daily workflow is smooth. I bought my iBook in November and never had any issues, not even a crash....yet.

Contrast that with the PC I bought my family in December.......they've had more crashes than (counting toes and fingers) ahhhh, nevermind - too many to mention!!!

Welcome to the world of Macs...you'll soon discover why we love our Macs the way we do!!

Yes - if nothing else, in 6 months it will come with Tiger.
