Problem is, Apple is following along with the demands of more than a few consumers, who expect something new and shiny every year - if not sooner.

"Android devices have an OS app that can do that? Why can't my iPhone / iPad? Come on Tim, hurry it along"
How about this?

Release 2 new phones a year, and one new macOS every 2 years. Bam. Everybody's happy.

I could take or leave Liquid Glass, given that it does seem to have been a waste of time.

However, Safari has gotten so bad that I often have to switch to Chrome to get some websites to work. And this still happens after the 26.1 update (behavior didn't change). Also, system boot times are MUCH longer on Tahoe, at least in comparison to Mac OS Sonoma (MacOS 14).

As for Apple's recent software efforts, I think they know (finally) that they completely missed the boat in terms of AI and they are now struggling to catch up. That probably means most of their current efforts are being directed toward AI.

Not all Mac's are overpriced. Now as Apple Silicon has brought Macbook Air form factor to what it was conceived to be when it was first released it does not look overpriced when comparing it to offerings from other manufacturers in "apples vs apples" - or "oranges vs oranges"-way.

When we add the build quality to it then it becomes hard to find similar "bang-for-buck" offering from other "plastic-fantastic" device manufacturers.

But what comes to "losing its way" then the birth story of Apple Intelligence (the one still having "BETA" on its icon) tells clearer story about it than most other examples can. Who knows maybe "Solarium UI" has been born in similar way?
I recently looked up Workstation Desktops and Laptops, and the ones from Lenovo, Dell, and HP, were from $6,000-$10,000+, and they didn't all have more than 128 GB of RAM, or more than a 4TB SSD. Many Gaming and Business Desktop and Laptops from other Manufacturers are more expensive than Macs.

True, and the quality of the hardware itself is usually not as good.

This is the one thing that I always notice switching from a Mac to a PC, everything else just feels flimsy.

Apple is lucky that their competitors suck so bad. But rather than strive for excellence, it seems like the company has shifted to a mode of doing just enough to stay a little better than the alternatives.

About flimsiness I have one comparison based on own experience.

I saw Thinkpad X series falling from desk to carpeted office floor with lid open. Hinges broke off from the lid.
Then I myself accidentally knocked my old 2010 Macbook Pro to bare tiled floor with lid open. Only injure was a small dent in a corner of the lid.

It does not seem to matter how expensive plastic-fantastic laptop to get - it will shatter anyway in this situation...

But this problem is one product for millions of users.
they just hafta perfect that once, then sent that out as one.
compared to or not like....say a reputable racing bike wheel manufacture that is made thousands of times over
and shipped individually 1k times.

I agree with everything else, as you always post a great perspective on  today.

For a company to produce OSs for only the hardware they too produce (unlike, say, Windows, Android, Linux), their lapses are inexcusable.

Rushing to build "Squirrel!" products to satisfy the churn the stakeholders demand. Quality isn't even secondary these days.

I respectfully disagree. They've only hit Windows 8 level garbage. They have to try a lot harder to reach Vista's level of crappiness. 😉
Win 8 is what finally have me do the move to full-time Mac usage. And that's having lived through the Vista era.

It never occurred to me that Apple would regress to become the glitchy guy in a suit.

As a loyal user for many many years, I've noticed that the OS quality of the last years seems to decline quite rapidly. Almost like a scene out of "idiocracy" - More colors, more buttons, more choices, more rounded, more glitter..

What happened to lean, professional, idealistic, people driven, clean MacOS releases?
The last few years have felt like Devolution to me. With Tahoe taking the crown. I will delay upgrading or using it as long as possible. Worse performance, battery life, less available memory..

I hope Apple will get to their senses and go back to their roots. This just does not feel worthy.

From your lips to Tim's ears. So sad that this debacle had to happen. A sure sign of decision by committee. You are correct on every count.

Please expound - what do you mean about the lies?
from Macworld, Apple Inside, PC MAG, Verve, Tom's, and every other reviews:
"most Stable OS in years!"
"more battery life"
"Liquor Glass is amazing!"
"Faster file search"
"better computing experience"
"AI is A1!"
"Lighting fast GUI!!!"
" did not stop at nothing!"

I read many reviews, was tricked and even went back here after a long absence.
which was a good thing, but everyone behind a keyboards and paycheck....
well after using that for a month I realized AI or their computer were M5.

then I saw the same over-bloated fake 10 star reviews that did not pertain to the script and acting of
on the dexter TV new series, the 4th spin off on IMDB and made a note to myself that this is the world now.
just fake reviews to promote a product.

you really didn't provide links, but I will address what you've written. What I see is people's opinions on what was released, not lies

Here's PCmag's review:

Pros & Cons

  • Elegant Liquid Glass design
  • Spotlight enhancements boost day-to-day productivity
  • Formerly iOS-only features continue to arrive
  • Automations are easier and more useful than ever
  • Helpful changes to core apps, functions, and interface elements
  • Disk image format changes promise virtualization performance improvements
  • The menu bar could still be more customizable
  • Apple Intelligence isn't yet impressive

Pros
+ Liquid Glass design is lovely
+ New Continuity features are great for iPhone owners
+ Apple Intelligence improves a host of apps, most notably...
+ Supercharged Spotlight Search is a game-changer

Cons
- Games app seems superfluous

Basically what I see is people writing about their experiences and finding something largely positive. You may disagree and that's fine, but I see no lies, no overt attempt to deceive the public.

If only I had the extra time to provide links!

the again those beat tech writers won't condone anything new from 
so that was my fault. and will stand in a corner for 15 minutes,
if I only had the time!

hey i'm supposed to have "ignore" anything Tahoe'd here...what gives?

What about it? Very few Linux developers can afford food or a haircut or a bath. It’s just not a sustainable path for the majority of people who want to earn a living programming and because of “vibe coding” the Snap store is drowning in hundreds of garbage apps and low quality clone apps every week which makes visibility even harder.
Well, it is the only place to go. Should Apple keep up the downward trend with their OS.
