If he just got a new MacBook why would he do that? He's happy with Tahoe, but it sounds like you're trying to convince him otherwise. If you run High Sierra and Tahoe on the same hardware, you will hate Tahoe ;-)

And there you go, Tahoe in a nutshell… I LOVE using MacOS Tahoe.
It's very much in line with iOS/iPadOS, I didn't have any usability issues, felt right at home.

Apple: goodbye Mac users, welcome iPhone/iPad users
funny! you're saying, 'if you remove features, speed, security, functionality... you'll be happier'.If you run High Sierra and Tahoe on the same hardware, you will hate Tahoe ;-)

maybe true? until you try to sign in to your bank, or realize the contacts you just added to your phone aren't on your mac 🤔
What are these complex operating system level things? That's an important point. People mention all the bugs and other issues but don't weigh it against so many more complex things Apple is attempting to implement. The older, much more reliable OS versions did so much less than the current OS.
But, I do wish Apple did a much better job at it.
right. there are no useful differences between high sierra (2017) and tahoe (2025). nothing useful was developed under-the-hood, there are no new features, better speed, or better security. better tools. ways to synchronize data between devices. What are these complex operating system level things?
Subscription cloud storage?

The countless servers, metrics, telemetry, analytics, beacons that macOS continuously wants to connect to as soon as a network is active?
Meanwhile, it still can’t do basic things like USB that can’t be ejected or wasn’t ejected properly, or in-use when nothing is using it, drives that randomly unmount from sleep sometimes but not every time.
Transparency, rounded corners, oversized ui, retina burning light mode - are these the complex things?
I guess we are different there. I prefer progress where that progress is better than what came before. Unfortunately Apple doesn't always agree with me--especially in MacOS 26.right. there are no useful differences between high sierra (2017) and tahoe (2025). nothing useful was developed under-the-hood, there are no new features, better speed, or better security. better tools. ways to synchronize data between devices.
imagine the uproar if apple brought us back to intel chips, 2017 speeds, and high sierra. fortunately, we live in the real world, where things move forward, not backward (even if moving into uncharted territory often brings it's own challenges & issues). personally, i prefer progress 🤔
that's odd. i also prefer progress where it's better than before... and am happy (& productive) on OS 26. sorry your own experience is not satisfactory I guess we are different there. Thank you, I appreciate that. It's all good though. I already moved on, so I won't even know if MacOS 27 is better. I realized I am not giving up gaming, so I might as well just go all in on Windows and got a great gaming laptop. So I am good. I'll sell my M4 Macbook Air and move on.that's odd. i also prefer progress where it's better than before... and am happy (& productive) on OS 26. sorry your own experience is not satisfactory
really, then, great you found a system that works for you; that's what matters most 👍Thank you, I appreciate that. It's all good though. Are you using Time Machine? I've encountered a lot of Spotlight issues related to that.
I hung off installing it until a couple of weeks ago.
It's not garbage but I understand the frustration. Gradually, the OS has gone from something intuitive and easy to use, to something where things are hidden and complex
The move to a single interface has impacted MacOs so there are lots of annoyances. There's clearly been a move to design over function and it's much less functional than it was.
A simple example: Macmail, you have a sidebar and an icon to shut or open the sidebar. In Tahoe you can shut it but then the icon disappears so you have to hunt in a menu to open it again.
Multiply this kind of mistake all round the operating system and you very quickly start to get angry.
The whole move to Liquid glass is is proof of this. You copy a text- which is now white- and paste it into a form and of course, it's disappeared. It looks pretty but functionally, it's a disaster.
And it might be me but turning on the 'tint' (or whatever it's called I can't remember, but trying to get rid of liquid glass) when I did that loads of things glitched. I turned it off and decided to get used to it and in my opinion, it really does run a lot more smoothly under liquid glass.
I came from Windows when Tiger was just being replaced by Leopard and I remember the 'Wow!' factor when I saw cover flow and everything was so advanced. I thought at the time it was probably a decade ahead of Windows.
Windows is a lot better since then but there's nothing 'Wow' in it, but frankly Tahoe isn't as good as Leopard- Snow Leopard was peak MacOs
Functionally, it's as messy as Vista.
snow leopard; it was a great OS, but that was almost a decade ago
wow, right. 2009...Time actually flies - it's almost two decades ago. Fond memories of this time where we could swap pretty much any component in our macs. But then again I'm romanticising, because we also had crappy, slow and crashprone HDDs, low memory, screens that were impossible to properly calibrate,...

I answered my phone on my computer the other day. It used to not work well, but since Tahoe I've not had a problem. My wife called and asked me to check on something upstairs. So after first answering on my computer, I picked up my phone, pushed some button, and the call transferred to the phone and I left my office, continuing the conversation. I was blown away. But, my faith in Apple is such that I wouldn't be surprised if that fails 25% of the time.
Apple is ambitious and careless. It's still the best platform for me.
Ehm, Spotlight has already been scanning images and even video for text and content since many years ago.If Apple ever introduces Live Text functionality into Spotlight importing, then we could have a disaster on our hands. We won't be allowed to turn it off and it will have a non-trivial cost. I wouldn't trust Apple to get this right.
I am on Sequoia, I make and receive calls all the time using my iPhone 16 Pro, Mac and OG HomePods.
While I do like the feature, I find it frustrating. Sometimes the call will just drop while other times it disconnects when another call comes in, and it is not noticed (there is no call waiting beep on the HomePods or Mac). I am in a full cellular signal area when I use the feature.
The biggest inconvenience is when I’ve been on hold in a queue, or it’s an important call. My solution is to use my phone directly, but I’m going to try and disable call waiting for outgoing calls as a test.
What problems did you have before Tahoe?

Thank you. Let's hope Apple dumps this as fast as MS dumped VISTA. As I remember, MS got the message real fast!I hung off installing it until a couple of weeks ago.

Thanks for sharing this sadly depressing news.
