what the heck is this...MY BATTERY LIFE WENT FROM 4HRS TO 2HRS AFTER THE UPDATE I have a 500mhz ibook...I knew I shouldn't have updated!

Ok, I just installed the 10.2.8 update on my 2002 800MHz iBook, and....it killed it. It now powers down soon after boot, when it says:
*** PAS: gotChildIterator
in verbose mode. Lush.
a) Any ideas as to how to fix? (seems to be a kernel problem)
b) Be careful about installing on this machine!

Cheers

whoa. mine too ... actually, though, it's steadily going 'up' ... from 1:45 ... up to 2:04 now ... 2:05 ... still going .... odd??

Re: Software Install Crash

I take NO responsibility for the following!!! (although I have done something similar in the past which worked with no ill effects - I can remember it was an Apple supplied update, but I can't remember what it was for).

Look in your Library folder in the root directory of your System HD for the Receipts Folder. Remove "MacOSXUpdate10.2.8.pkg". Try running Software Update again. It may just decide 10.2.8 isn't present, and do a normal install.

..k

I was installing the OS update. While it was installing, I tried scrolling down the text on the install window that describes the install. Once done scrolling down the darned thing would bounce back to the top of the text. After trying to scroll down a few times Software Update crashed.

The download was not complete but "about this mac" states that it is 10.2.8. If I go back to software update, the 10.2.8 update is no longer available (along with several other things that I did not even choose to download, such as Airport and Blue tooth stuff). Any suggestions on what I should do?

My poor, poor iBook

My 500 mHz iBook crashed right at the end of the install of the update. Restarted, would not let me log in. Popped in OS X disc, reset passwords, no luck. So, a reinstall of Jaguar is what I am doing now. Oh, happy day.

It has been at 85.5 Since 10.2.7

I've posted that for quite a while...

About Safari says it's version 1.0(v85)
is that correct ? I thought I read somewhere someone ended up with v85.5 ?

They did update to 85.5

What instability are you seeing with 10.2.8? I would hope there haven't been any regressions from the seeds...

WM (not an ADC member, but my dad's 15" AlBook just shipped!)

I got the original 10.2.7 (Non-G5)

I have seen my dock change (minor annoyance).

Some applications now don't know what they are suppose to be opened by...

some other weird occurrences. :(

Grrr....I knew I shoulda waited

Now that I've installed 10.2.8, I'm realizing I should have read a few more posts and waited. My Revolution 7.1 PCI card doesn't work anymore and my second internal HD is hosed. "Invalid number of allocation blocks" is the error I get. Thanks to Micromat, I don't have TechTool Pro to address the problem!!! (But that's a whole other can o' worms). Drive 10 won't fix it and neither will Disk Utilities. I have 60 GB of video files for my church sitting on there that I can't get to. I don't know if the update did it or not, but all I know is that it worked before I installed the update and now it doesn't.

No I bought a new battery a few weeks back b/c my other one only held a 20 min charge. The new battery held 4hrs until I upgraded to 10.8.crap! I really do not want to have to reinstall jaguar.....grrrr! Doesn't apple test this stuff before hand....goodness!

I have installed it on 3 macs with no trouble. (iMac 17", TiBook 1Ghz, and iMac CRT Slot loading...)

Thanks for the heads up.
I'm glad I didn't update then. Is the transparent dock something that you can re-apply? Apple should really offer the transparency preference to the dock, as well with other items, example: Like it is in the terminal. I am concerned about this with panther. I won't upgrade until I know the transparent dock works in that.

I'm using Panther DP 7B68 now, and no sign of Dock transparency in Sys. Prefs. Sorry.

Although, I gotta say, Panther ROCKS. I'm on an iMac DV 400 w/ 320MB, and it flys. And Steve was right - Preview IS faster than Acrobat. Everything seems faster, easier, more intuitive. Some bugs, but whatever, it's a pre-release, eh?

((tig)

Grimace: The transparent dock is a hack, but installing 10.2.8 seems to mess it up. I actually had to revert to my dock backup, but then i changed it to transparent no sweat.

Wow I can't believe some of the garbage being posted here.

Anyhoo:

Tom, let the machine run a while the battery timer needs to be recalibrated.

The update works fine on the new powerbooks. In fact it fixed a problem I had with Safari randomnly closing windows (after trashing perfs).

According to the battery timer my battery life has gone up(!) since the update.

If anything my machine is faster, those who are claiming it is slower, in what ways? What programs are slower?

Also it appears sound cards that don't work or have trouble in panther are broken in this update. Dunno if it is Apple's screw up or a change in the way the audio drivers from a 3rd party need to work.

The dock has been updated, this causes that handy dandy little hack that a lot of people have been using to stop working because it was reinstalled.

Anyone tried to reinstall the 6C48 dock with 10.2.8?

My iBook ( I got it in June, 800 Mhz, Amazon had a sale) seems to have lowered it's battery time about an hour or so.. Should I recalibrate? Ir is it something.....else?

My pb battery is down to 2:00

I can report too that the battery on my Ti 550Mhz went down to 2:00 from about 3:30..
Also, the transperent dock doesn't work. Thank god, i backed up my dock before trying transperentdock, i tried several times, no luck.

Working just fine with no problems on this iBook 500 and seems to be a bit snappier especially under load but maybe that's just wishful thinking. My Powerbook 12" hasn't arrived yet. ;-)

Had a couple of preferences change - the desktop icons reset their size and my mouse went back to default speed but it's been doing that a lot lately on reboots anyway.

Safari may be 85.5 but I noticed webcore is v87 now. The brushed metal in Safari also seems to be grainier than other metal apps but that may have been like that before but I didn't notice.

I don't know what people mean by a transparent dock? Mine's always been transparent. ie. you can see stuff under it.

There's an odd bug in the keyboard prefs. Click on the bluetooth tab and it becomes keyboard selectable with a focus around it but only if you start at that tab clicking. Odd. Perhaps it's a sign of greater keyboard integration with the UI - something I've missed from other OSs.

Bluetooth (with Dlink DWB-120M dongle) seems to be quicker at recognising my T610 and SMS via address book is much nicer. There's also an 'allow bluetooth devices to wake this computer' setting that is greyed out. That would have been cool if I could wake my iBook by walking into the room with my phone. Maybe that's coming in Panther.

Before the update I used to get about 3:40 on my battery. After the update it initially went down to 1:50. After 15 minutes on battery power it is now at 2:01. Hopefully the timer will be calibrated soon and I will be able to determine whether or not any adjustment has actually been made.

i.... think i'll wait till panther is released. Sounds like some unhappy updaters out there. Hey, if it ain't broke, don't fix it!

dammit!

dammit dammit dammit!

... i have almost 40 days of uptime. i swear i am not applying this till i hit 40 tomorrow afternoon. sheesh!
