Mac OS X 10.2.8 Update

For starters, you could run Apple System Profiler (in the Utilities folder) and check that the Superdrive shows up in the Bus section of the Devices and Volumes tab, and whether an inserted CD or DVD shows up as a sub-component to its right in the display. This would at least tell you whether the hardware is being detected.

I rebooted, and now my drive works again. I looked in the devices and volumes and the drive is showing up. I'm going to run a hardware test now just for giggles.

Thanks for the help.

X-Bench slower with 10.2.8

When I ran X-Bench the memory system copy test is about 50% of it's former speed. On my Quick Silver the drop is from the 80's to the low 40's.

Has any one else had that experience?

I have seen it said on several sites like think secreat forums ect that the first time anything is run on 10.2.8 the prebind does not work corectly. they have said word takes 10 sec the fist time to launch and about 2 seconds the secound time it is launched in 10.2.8. I have people saying on one forum that it is faster by about 10% I forget what post it was

12" PB battery time

I just updated to 10.2.8 and I too have noticed a dip in my battery time. It says 92%/1:32!! Should I recalibrate my battery? I'll also check to see if the time is correct. I'm timing the time until it falls asleep. Cross your fingers. (My processor is set to reduced under the Energy Saver settings)

weird jumped to log-in screen

:(

started imacdv 400 this morning, logged in, desktop loaded, turned external lacie fw HD on, opened MPlayer OSX, selected a divx film from its menu, film plays for about 5 seconds then...whoa suddenley I'm at the login screen.

Tried to get this weirdness to repeat itself...seems fine now

server problems?

I am holding off on updating my 17" iMac as it doesn't really seem to provide much for me. At work, I am running a server that I would like to patch up the ssh hole. Has anyone had any problems with the server update? I am very leary about it as I have the thing loaded with extra drives - half after market ones. Last thing I need is for those to be inaccessable.

I made a quick check and so far no problems with my PM G4/400.

Launchbar, hacks et al. still working fine.

Could'nt make out any performance differences either.

Left it to my wife to run into problems while I'm at work. :D

Even though mine said 1:50 left, it actually lasted over 3 hours - and that was while multi-tasking AND charging my ipod. I let mine run all the way down and am letting it recharge. Hopefully, the time remaining will be more accurate now.

Does anybody know if the new MDD G4s, which supposedly have USB 2 support, now have USB 2 support enabled???

Well apparently those Macs can't actually use the USB 2.0 since the controllers are not wired up for it on the motherboard. I read this over at MacNN, supposedly although the controller is a USB 2.0 one Apple (and others) just use them as USB 1.1 as it's the same price. Or something.

Someone mentioned SideTrack earlier, does it work OK with 10.2.8? I can't live without it...

Ah... tnx for the info.

Bleeh, still no Bluetooth PC-Card Support....

... Did Steve-o sign a friggin stupid contract with D-Link again because they officially only support their crappy USB Dongle??? I find it pretty rude of Apple towards owners of Pre-Aluminum Powerbooks that they have to use stupid USB Dongles when Apple graciously puts PC-Card Slots into those things. I mean, if they can officially support one stupid USB Dongle, can't they at least support ONE PC-Card like from 3com or Belkin????? Just ONE!!!! Come on Steve-o it can't be that hard....

I have had a problem with iphoto not burning photos ever since day one.
My problem was that when I tried to burn a disc within iphoto it would always pop up an alert saying that "there is not enough room on the disc to burn your images, please select less images and try again". I tried less and less images until I had only one left weighing about 400K still no burn. I spent many unfruitful hours looking online for a reason, but gave up. After update? successful burn of over 300 images. yippy. Before, I had to burn the images from the hard drive manually which was a pain because of all the nested directories. Now to get back some of that precious HD space.

For what its worth I have a 400MHZ TIPB with an external firewire smartDisk that came with the PB because Apple was just coming out with the combo drive.

Did I say that I love Apple?

Anyone else with such a problem: you can export any selection of pix from iPhoto to a single folder. Just remember to check the option that says keep the original format, otherwise it will re-compress/lose quality. No need to get them from all the different folders.

10.2.8 killed my linux

Hi All,

I updated to 10.2.8 last night on my 12" G4 Powerbook, and now my Linux doesn't work! The machine just powers down early into the boot process. Has anyone else experienced this? I think it may be due to my machine's clock getting messed after this update - after every reboot it tells me I'm in 1970, even though I'm using NTP!

Delta series SoundCard Driver probelms

After installing 10.2.8 update my Delta Audiocard control panel crash randomly when launched.

I have reinstalled the driver and for now everithing work well.

I got mild scare when I restarted my Ti 500 after upgrading 10.2.6 to 10.2.8: a bunch of Quicktime .mov clips on my desktop had iTunes 4 icons!

What was really strange was the icons had the word "MOVIE" stamped on them the way the correct quicktime icons would have.

Anyway, restarting again corrected the icons.

BTW, just checked iTunes' resources, and there is an iTunes movie icon. Whatever for?

Now that's interesting... iTunes Movie Store anyone?

Weird. I've had that happen to me a couple of times when I just had my 12" powerbook (867 MHz). It didn't happen now with 10.2.8, though.

Slightly of topic: does anyone know if our great BSD-Darwin can be binary compatible with Linux, like the 'real' BSD? That has been an option in e.g. FreeBSD for quite some time now. Would that solve your Linux problem? You would never have to leave OSX again!

I have updated 2 DualG4/1.25/FW800 at work this morning and it doesn't look ke USB 2.0 is supported. At least nothing has changed in that respect on the Apple System Profiler. I don't have any USB 2.0 peripheral so I can't test it.

On a different note (slightly off-topic) has anyone else had problems with finder windows not remembering their display settings (after a reboot), meaning background colour and icon arrangement for example. I've had this problem for a while now and i have no idea how to fix this... Any idea?

And ? How ist it going ?

I am here on business and found this place last night. It's called Pacific Coast Brewing Co. on Washington street. Free WI-FI, good food, and great beer....what more can I ask?

By the way, after the update my battery life is slowly creeping up ?!@ Strange. Just hope it doesn't ruin my battery life....it's gonna be a long flight if it does (i.e. I'll suddenly feel like a windows user)...

Hi,

how is it going ? Any problems with the update ? And did you use Combo or just updated from 10.2.6 ?

Cheers

10.2.8 killed my iMac, HELP?

I downloaded OS X 10.2.8 using Software Update. I left the machine to it, as it was going to take a while (even with 1MB broadband). I came back to my iMac 30 mins later and it was asleep and it would not wake up. So I reset the machine and waited for it to boot. Got the grey screen with the Apple logo, then the blue screen with the progress meter, then when the password/logon screen was due the machine just displayed a blank blue screen, I could see and move the mouse pointer. There was no logon screen, or menus or icons, could not even eject a CD This happened every time I booted into OS X 10.2.8.

The only options I am faced with is by reinstalling panther but I am scared I will loose all my data by doing that. Or install OS 9.2 which insists on formatting the drive as it can't mount Mac HD 1. Help?

Are there any ways or hacking into OS X maybe even in terminal mode and removing OS 10.2.8 maybe?

Did you try installing 10.2.8 on top of Panther (10.3) or something?

Can you boot from a CD at all? Do you have another Mac handy to rescue your files via Target Disk Mode?

I have a problem since the update (I did it straight from software update)

It seems that my mac doesn't want to see the network now. When I boot from a different disk its okay. None of the network settings seem to have changed. When I ping the router I get Host is down.

Any clues?
